The history of RP in Europeia: Can we consistently run successful RP's? By hyanygo with support from Calvin Coolidge and HEM
uh... maybe the right thing would be to give up about it... I thought everybody would like roleplaying... now I see I'm wrong =/ - Delvetia, 2007
Roleplaying has never been that high on the Europeian agenda, so it was a surprise when President Mousebumples created the Ministry for Role Play and then nominated Seven Deaths to be its first Minister. Part of the reason why roleplaying has not been a major part of Europeia is because the political game is so attractive. It is an attraction that makes West-Wing themed recruitment telegrams vastly more effective than roleplaying ones, it is an attraction that keeps people pressing F5 on election day, it is an attraction that causes the melted cheese to fall out of your mouth as you say “No way, he just didn’t do -that-!”.
Whatever the future for roleplays, it is up against it with the politics of Europeia. The history of roleplays does not bode well for it either. On the face of it, the most active roleplay forum, EuroFantasy is a red herring given that it is replete with sign ups and indicators of interest. The story repeats itself, sign up thread after sign up thread being the largest topics in the roleplay forum. There is a big problem with getting those interested to play. And this is a big problem since people who play, stay.
We tried to follow TNP’s lead but with little interest and activity in EuroToday. We tried national roleplay and that languished at the side. We tried a World RP which went into single digits with its activity: 1 post. We haven’t done well historically either, with Overthrow Anumia!, Democracy in Action, Mafia RP, and other archived role plays. This ought to spell doom and gloom for Seven Deaths, especially since in his interview he mentioned not researching (1 minute). Previous administrations presumably with the research of experience, have admitted defeat:

Look, Roleplaying is not something every person is interested in, and its hard to regulate a passing interest. With that in mind, the government tends to take a minimal role in this area past a Culture Minister trying to stir up some fun.
Its up to you, the RPer, to make this work. Think up ideas, get people involved, and get things started. Many RPs start with enthusiasm, but never get off the ground into the actual Role-Playing stage.
There is some silver lining on our clouds however, we did outstandingly well in World RP! and American Election RP III, the latter being probably our most successful roleplay as a region so far. So why was this successful? Energy, and a lot of it. So much so that HEM burned out, Jerrymania dropped out and the game finally ended in a whimper. It was “good deal of work” according to HEM. But at the end of the day, even Skizzy found it to be

a fantastic idea
It’s no surprise that American Election RP was such a hit: it provided quick feedback, “sessions” were short, there was a clear goal and it used the attractiveness of Europeia and its politics positively. Furthermore, the rules were very short so that anyone could jump in at any time. So it seems like there is a lesson from history here:
Have a clear goal Have many smaller, quickly achievable goals Make the rules simple Tap into interests
When you tap into interests and keep the rules simple even pigs can fly, for example, the When Hawks Fly roleplay. In the end, that roleplay did not reach its end, so it is difficult to say whether it was a complete success. Nevertheless, allowing it to organically bloom and having a mix of personalities who were attached to their game-side nation allowed it to be successful. And history shows us that even though, in absolute terms, our success with RPs have been small, we have seen more interest when we’ve used our nations.
With the advent of live-audio and skype chats, could short sessioned live role playing using our nations be our most attractive bet? Or could it be that we’ve been asking ourselves the wrong question, is it not “can we make a better roleplay?” but “can we make better roleplayers?”.

Motivations Desiderata ~ By Max Ehrmann Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. - By Max Ehrmann The Thousanth Man ~ Rudyard Kipling 0NE man in a thousand, Solomon says. Will stick more close than a brother. And it's worth while seeking him half your days If you find him before the other. Nine hundred and ninety-nine depend On what the world sees in you, But the Thousandth Man will stand your friend With the whole round world agin you.
'Tis neither promise nor prayer nor show Will settle the finding for 'ee. Nine hundred and ninety-nine of 'em go By your looks, or your acts, or your glory.
But if he finds you and you find him, The rest of the world don't matter; For the Thousandth Man will sink or swim With you in any water.
You can use his purse with no more talk Than he uses yours for his spendings, And laugh and meet in your daily walk As though there had been no lendings.
Nine hundred and ninety-nine of 'em call For silver and gold in their dealings; But the Thousandth Man he's worth 'em all Because you can show him your feelings.
His wrong's your wrong, and his right's your right, In season or out of season. Stand up and back it in all men's sight With that for your only reason!
Nine hundred and ninety-nine can't bide The shame or mocking or laughter, But the Thousandth Man will stand by your side To the gallows-foot - and after!

Most just choose not to participate in RP forum games because they are dull, although if anyone from here has the patience and desire, join the „Aporkalypse” game from the Roleplay category! ^^

Well, a bit off topic. But one of my friends started a RP forum with people playing Nationstates, then gradually started recruiting people to RP from Facebook.*
So having active RP's in a region is entirely possible, as long as you find the right theme that keeps people interested.
It is also good to have a game master, just to keep the story flowing and provide background information.
*I even participated in a fun alien invasion scenario RP - where each nation/player had to RP how their nations deal with the aftermath of an alien invasion event, and how they interact with the interstellar community.
