Welcome to Europeia!
So what the heck is Europeia anyways?

Can I join?

So, I came here representing another region? I do not want to become a citizen. Where should I go?

What offices are there for people to be elected into?

What is there for me to do in Europeia?

That answers most of my immediate questions. What if I have any more?

Torontos Mayoral Election: Will Ford Nation Lose?; Ugly Racism from Ford Supporters

Torontos Mayoral Election has three main frontrunners duking it out; John Tory, Doug Ford and Olivia Chow. Doug Ford is running after two tumours were discovered in his brother Rob Ford, forcing Rob to drop out of the election. Rob Ford might have been the most well known mayor ever, with his antics making him known across the world as a punchline. Doug Ford, his older brother is now running in his place.

John Tory

John Tory is the former leader of the Provincial Conservatives and a former member of the Provincial Parliament. He is old money, as his family is known for owning a prestigious law firm. I'd say that John Tory is my personal choice since he seems to have the best plan for transit (which is a long running issue in Toronto), he works well with others and is well loved by the business side of Toronto. Furthermore, John Tory is also well loved by business oriented immigrants and seems to work well with others having been on many committees.

John Tory however has a big weakness which is his personality; he has as much charisma as a paper bag. But after four years of Rob Ford I think we could do with a boring Mayor who has business smarts. John Tory is also the front runner, this is his race to lose. Despite being a former leader of the Provincial Conservatives, many Provincial Liberals have come out in support of Tory. This is important because it is vital to work together with the Provincial government as the Mayor of Toronto and something that Rob Ford struggled with.

Recent polls have John Tory leading as he has for a few months at 43% according to a recent poll.

Doug Ford

Where to begin with the Fords? They are conservatives popular with suburbia. I will admit, that it is admirable how Rob Ford was a man of the people and worked really hard to always make himself accessible to voters. Rob Ford would always answer phonecalls to constituents. However, his politics are not impressive. Rob ran on an anti-establishment campaign on ending the "gravy train". However, Toronto is not a city of gravy and despite blustering, Rob Ford has not saved the city much money. Toronto's issues generally arise from the opposite of over-spending, which is a lack of revenue.

Doug Ford is running on his brothers record and legacy. Prior to his brothers issues with crack cocaine coming out, he was regarded as the more "nuts" brother and felt as a bit of a bully. He is famous for wanting to bring a ferris wheel to the Port Lands and a Casino to Toronto, two things that a majority of people are against and that quite frankly I feel are gimmicks that I strongly oppose. Furthermore, Rob Ford and his brother exemplified divisive politics and they ruined the previous transit plan by vowing to "end the war on cars" and simply build subway.

The problem with simply building subways is the fact that Toronto simply doesn't have enough money to adequately address its congestion and public transportation woes with simply subways. So while I agree that subways rather than above ground Light Rail Transit (LRT) is preferable, Toronto has to do the most with what it has got. Furthermore, the people who support the Fords can be pretty scary and he tends to draw upon Tea Party North base that is widely based on lower and mid suburban income whites.

Latest polls have him in second or third with 29-34% of support.

Olivia Chow

A former Federal Member of Parliament for the New Democrat Party (NDP) and a former City Councillor. She is also the widow of former NDP leader Jack Layton who led the NDP to its greatest amount of seats in Canada ever and the first to lead the NDP to be the second largest party in Parliament becoming the official opposition before succumbing to cancer. Olivia Chow was the front runner for a while but has since seen her lead erode to the point were many are predicting she will finish 3rd.

Olivia Chow is definitely the most leftwing of the three candidates. This might be why she is lagging behind, as Toronto in recent years has been fairly conservative when it comes to municipal politics. Sadly, there have been attacks on her by supporters of Doug Ford based upon the fact that she is an immigrant from Hong Kong who can speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English. In a recent debate a Ford supporter heckled her by yelling out "Go back to China" and in another event a Ford supporter asked her if she felt ashamed that she earned public money despite being an immigrant during her career.

She is currently polling second or third at 19%-28% but has been closer to the mid twenties generally.

Ford Supporters are Embarrassing Toronto

Quite frankly, it is embarrassing for Toronto. Toronto is considered one of the greatest cities in the world to live in, in part because of its fantastic record with multiculturalism. In particular, the Greater Toronto Area and Toronto in general have thrived because of immigration and we are lucky to have a society in which multiculturalism is not simply a policy but a way of life. In my highschool I was a minority being caucasian. As well, I was one of a few students who was a second generation Canadian. Most people were first generation or had moved here from other countries. This has to do with the fact that the part of the Greater Toronto Area I live in is very immigrant friendly.

For me, I actually feel weird when I am in areas that only have a majority of white people. When I go up North, it feels awkward. Mind you, it also feels weird because people know you're not from the area and look at you a little funny because of how these places are smaller. In Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area no one knows who are because of how large they are. When I go to school, I don't know if students are from here or from abroad. The only way I can find out is if I talk to them.

It is sad and disappointing to hear what some members of Toronto are yelling at Olivia Chow. We as a whole are better than that; as a city Toronto has elected lesbian councillors and minorities. The Premier of Ontario; Katherine Wynne, is our first elected female Premier and is actually married to another woman. It makes me so happy to see that sort of progressiveness and tolerance from Ontario but as an intellectual NES linked me to recently said, we must be tolerant except when it comes to intolerance. Ford nation or Tea Party north draws upon and has empowered the more intolerant parts of the city. Rob Ford when intoxicated has some horrid things to women and gays. It would bring me great pleasure if they are crushed at the next election.

You know, I here there is a place where writers can come together and collaborate on articles, where there is a never-ending supply of news, managed by an incredibly attractive panda. I can't remember where that is... well, wherever it is I'm sure it is an Excellent Bombastic Clan.

Rach, do candidates need 50%+1 to win mayoral races? Would there be a runoff if no one wins a majority?

No run-offs, it is first past the post. But candidates who win tend to be close to 50% and sometimes get over it.
