| Welcome to Europeia!
So what the heck is Europeia anyways? Europeia is a region of NationStates that follows the principles of republicanism, meaning the officials of Europeia are elected by the people, of the people, and usually for the people.
Can I join? Of course. Of course. All you have to do is register an account. Validate said account (it should send an email to the email address you have provided, if it did not pester us about it here). Your account in the beginning will automatically be placed in the non-citizen usergroup. You can change that by applying for citizenship. The application, for security purposes, usually takes a few days to be processed by our forum administrators. But once that is done you can see it all and do it all as a full citizen of Europeia .
So, I came here representing another region? I do not want to become a citizen. Where should I go? First you have to register an account. Then you have to validate said account (it should send an email to the email address you have provided, if it did not pester us about it here). Your account in the beginning will automatically be placed in the Non-Citizen Usergroup. Then you can apply for diplomatic masking.
What offices are there for people to be elected into? Well, first of all there are three Branches of Government. There is the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary. The Executive is responsible for the day-to-day governance, the Legislative writes and manages the laws of Europeia, and the Judiciary has the Power to review laws to see if they comply with our Constitution as well as hear trials against accused citizens. The Executive is made up of the President, the Vice President and their Cabinet. The President and the Vice President are elected together every 70 days. They then nominate other citizens to fill the Cabinet Posts. Those nominated are then confirmed by the Senate. For more on the Executive click here. The Legislative is made up of the Senate and the Citizens' Assembly. The Senate is made up of a minimum of five citizens who are elected into office every 70 days, exactly 35 after the presidential elections. The Senate writes or repeals laws, confirms Ministers and Judges and can remove any elected official. The Citizens' Assembly writes pre-Legislation, which is then passed on to the Senate for approval. Members of the Assembly are not elected. Instead every citizen is automatically a Member. For more on the Legislature click here. The Judiciary is made up of the High Court, which answers legal questions and hears criminal and civil cases, looking to the laws of the Republic, both statutory and common, to render judgment. It is made up of the Chief Justice and three Associate Justices. The Justices serve for a 120-day term. Instead of being elected, they are nominated by the President and then confirmed by the Senate. For more on the Judiciary click here.
What is there for me to do in Europeia? If the game of high politics is not your cup of tea you can always just hang around doing fun things. Or if you want to put some work in, there is always the Civil Service, the Navy, and the Citizens' Assembly. As citizen, you can join the Civil Service (or CSO). The CSO assigns its Members (called Assistant Ministers or AMs) to the different Ministries to help out the Ministers. As AM you can do many things and garner great accolades. Most of the great politicians of Europeia started in the CSO. Once you become a citizen, you can also sign up to become a Sailor in our Navy, going out on raids, defending Europeia, or helping our allies defend themselves. Or, if reading and creating Law is more your speed, you can always join the Citizens' Assembly. If all of that did not sound like enough fun we have Spam Games, reasoned and less reasoned debate, Newspapers, Roleplays, and so much more.
That answers most of my immediate questions. What if I have any more? You could always check the Newcomer's Handbook to see if the answer to your question is there. It may even be in the FAQ (or Frequently Asked Questions). If neither answer your question, you can ask our admins here.

Firstly, I apologize for the delay. Real life has been hectic.
There has been a general lack of interest in the Senate over the past few terms, mostly due to the inactivity of the body. In a body of let's say eight Senators, two are inactive, two properly study the bills and contribute in a meaningful matter, and the remaining four just give proposals a quick reads and later would say "looks good" or "I support this", then we have a great problem and that has been the case. While Subron's removal from the Senate was unfortunate, it is what is best for the region and I commend the Senate for taking such an action. I am hoping that we see an improvement for this term. We should consider reinvigorating the City Council. It served as an avenue for citizens to sharpen their legislative skills before moving on to the Senate before, and it would play a big role in crafting quality legislators.
I agree with PhDre that one cannot blame any specific person if flawed bills are passed into law. A piece of legislation must pass through several stages, and I believe that we have a good, but not infallible, system. The Senate should exert more time and effort into making sure that bills are in the best possible condition before their submission to the President. Our top executive must also not assume that there are no errors and study the bill as well. Of course, some problems might be overlooked, but at least they would be minimized

Sorry for the delay in questioning. I've been busy elsewhere.
EO 68 codifies and puts into law the EAC. Do you feel this is a positive step? Will it really change anything?

While I feel that the realignment of the EAC into the FA Department as well as the forced accountability via Senate approval of... 'non leadership positions' in the EAC is definitely an improvement over the previous incarnation of the EAC. That being said, I feel that creating the EAAC via Executive Order, as well as legislating strict demands on the workings of the EAAC, will limit its ability to produce... 'advising.' Furthermore, there is a degree of red tape created by the Executive Order; I'd argue this red tape is manifested in the EAAC itself, which could have easily and comfortably been incorporated into the Cabinet. The EAAC's concentration on Foreign Affairs has resulted in this Administration straying from its responsibility to effectively lead and direct not only the Foreign Affairs Ministry, but more neglected Ministries such as Interior and Welfare. President Rachel's failed Culture Minister Panlu, and her flubbed replacement of Asianatic in Interior (resulting in our President taking over the Interior Ministry while she searches for a politically viable and reasonable Interior Minister candidate), has renewed focus on these Ministries and perhaps reminded the public that we need to look beyond just foreign affairs in terms of improving Europeia. The replacement of the EAC with a Cabient Advisory body could have gone a long way towards improving that; now we're stuck in limbo without an idea of who our Culture and Interior Ministers will be, and an inactive and recently unused EAAC.

Aw, man, this really sucked!
No, seriously, I want to thank Sopo for taking the time to direct this debate. It enlightened my opinion on a number of subjects and certainly helped me make up my mind about the individuals who answered.

Sopo, thanks for doing this.
If EBC does this again (and I hope it will), some effort should be made to increase the pace of play. For example, I would suggest moving on to the next question in 24 hours even if not all participants have responded. (Looking back at this thread, it seems that when replies were not quickly forthcoming, they were usually not forthcoming at all.)

Yes, this one was certainly a good litmus test of how to run them in the future.
