| Welcome to Europeia! So what the heck is Europeia anyways? Can I join? So, I came here representing another region? I do not want to become a citizen. Where should I go? What offices are there for people to be elected into? What is there for me to do in Europeia? That answers most of my immediate questions. What if I have any more? |

![]() What's next for CAIN? History, path forward Written by Punchwood & Audio by Cpt. Carrot Click to listen to Cpt. Carrot summarize What's Next for CAIN! Despite a strong start, the Coalition Against the Ideology of Nazism (CAIN) has experienced difficult setbacks following a legal challenge to CAINs initial attempts to reform. After passing the reforms a second time, the North Pacific (TNP) was unable to pass the revisions in its Regional Assembly and thus left the coalition. This came after the leftist regions The Internationale as well as the Red Fleet left the coalition earlier. Even in The South Pacific which overwhelmingly voted for the CAIN reforms there is a significant movement that is increasingly sceptical of CAIN and its ability to function going forward. There is a risk that without more successes like the victory CAIN achieved in the Union of the Fascist Reich (UFR) that more regions will disengage and leave the coalition. Can CAIN regain the momentum it had underneath Brunhilde? CAIN was started by Europeia when Brunhilde was our Minister of Foreign Affairs. After 12 days, 160 attendees and thirty-six different regions CAIN officially came into being on the 22nd of October. Only 3 days later and CAIN had its first military success. 18 regions from all different sides of the ideological spectrum came together to fight Nazism. The NSIA (Nationalist Socialist Invasion Army), a historic Nazi region in NationStates was targeted and defeated by CAIN. It proved that CAIN could work by bringing countless regions together and militarily defeating Nazi regions. CAIN did well under the leadership of Brunhilde. However, concentrating the leadership of CAIN informally in Brunhilde and Europeia could only take it so far. CAIN was concentrated mainly on Europeia’s shoulders. Instead of just a few regions originally coming together to form CAIN, Europeia came up of the idea and as such most of the regions in CAIN believed that it was Europeia’s responsibility to do much of the leadership and organizational work. We never really thought about how difficult it would be to not only get so many different regions with so many different views and ideologies together just to sign an agreement but also to be effective going forward. Perhaps if we had started small with a close group of regions, building up a tight and effective organizational structure we would have found the work and burden of CAIN easier to manage and distribute. When Brunhilde resigned as Vice President and gave up the reins of CAIN, the organisation slowed down significantly. We had created an organisation which was not developed and tight knit enough to continue to the standard we were used to with CAIN. Adding to the difficulties was the fact that the reforms that were meant to address the organizational structure of CAIN had to be done twice because of a legal challenge to the process. Isaris and Malashaan tried their best to take over from Brunhilde and deal with the changes in CAIN. Isaris became the public face of CAIN. Malashaan was the one who produced the reform draft. While the new treaty was widely accepted throughout the organisation, the same day it reached the three fifths majority saw regions start to leave. The Red Fleet (a military alliance made up of left-leaning members) from different regions chose to leave CAIN. The Internationale left soon after. Even before both The Red Fleet and The Internationale left CAIN, The East Pacific (TEP) also had left. Not all regions which left CAIN did so for the same reasons and it is likely TEP left because of their isolationist stances. The Red Fleet and The Internationale, while very effective in their fight against the Nazis did not always mesh well with the other regions in the coalition. It was not entirely unexpected that they would leave given the tensions they created din the coalition. The loss of The North Pacific was a difficult blow to CAIN. It is both a very close ally of Europeia as well as being a prominent region in NS. The region’s legislative branch when voting on the new CAIN treaty did not reach the ⅔ majority required to past and as such could no longer be considered a signatory of CAIN. This loss, the biggest to date cannot be understated, while the other alliances or regions to leave CAIN could be written off, the withdrawal of a close Europeia ally which also happens to be one of the most prominent regions in NS is difficult to downplay. The best course of action may be to start from scratch. We should recognise the incredible feat we achieved in getting so many regions all from different points on the gameplay spectrum together but also recognise the reality that this was always a challenging task. Getting all these different regions to put aside their partisan differences is difficult in the long term without deep sacrifices. Europeia should explore creating a much smaller organisation of our closest allies who are all near the same point on the gameplay spectrum and start to build upwards from there. We should also make sure that the leaders of this new organization are not just from Europeia but instead a mixture from all the regions. By having a much smaller group all with similar gameplay viewpoints we should remove most of partisanship that led to many of the difficulties . The new organization would be much more streamlined, decisions would be simpler to take, military operations could be planned with much more ease and by having leaders from all the different regions rather than just one, the organisation would not miss a beat even if one region became distracted. Yet by having a much smaller organization it becomes harder to defeat larger Nazi regions. Instead of many regions fighting Nazism together, it becomes a few fighting Nazism together. Being able to influence Nazi Collaborators to drop their support for Nazism becomes harder. What was once a large group of regions and alliances all from different sides of both the political and gameplay spectrum, is now a smaller group of regions all with similar viewpoints. The fewer regions in CAIN, the weaker it is. It has a smaller military, it has less influence and its “wow power” of showing unity against an evil ideology become so much weaker. CAIN’s greatest strength was its diversity and unity and a smaller organization loses much of that strength. Perhaps the best forward is not to become smaller but to improve on our current weakness. We should make it clear that CAIN’s goal is not to increase Europeia’s influence nor is it for Europeia to do the bulk of the work. CAIN’s goal is for all regions to come together regardless of where they sit on the political or gameplay spectrum to defeat Nazism by working together. We must find new leaders of CAIN but not just from Europeia. We must find them from raider regions and defender regions, GCR and UCR, bigger regions and smaller regions. We should be prepared to sometimes let people from other regions write any future drafts of CAIN, just as we should be prepared to sometimes let any future conferences of CAIN to held in forums other than our own. We can also never let just one person do the bulk of the work. No matter how brilliantly talented they may be or how easy it may be to allow them to do the work. It is not sustainable, it is not smart nor is it fair. CAIN’s future relies on us letting go a little, allowing other regions and other people a turn to lead. CAIN should not be Europeia’s project, it should be an interregional project. Yet is too little, too late? Have we allowed the partisan divides to grow too big, so that any effort now cannot close them up again? By having such a large coalition, we opened ourselves up to the natural divides that always have existed. even with a goal as noble as ending Nazism it is difficult to keep people from these different sides together. While having a large group of regions and alliances working together increases the size of military forces that CAIN may have as well as its influence, by having a divided front we may be weaker. It cannot intimidate or encourage regions to end any Nazi ties they may have while divided because these regions know that CAIN is divided and as such its influence is significantly weakened. In short, the more different regions in CAIN the weaker it is. It appears that it will be a difficult feat for CAIN to be able to get to its first anniversary in its current form. Yet CAIN is worth fighting for. CAIN saw 18 different regions all from different points in the political and gameplay spectrum come together in agreement to end a hateful, disgusting and evil ideology in NS. That’s worth fighting for. We must find a way to make sure that CAIN can and will work to help bring an end to Nazism in NS. It will require more inclusive leadership by Europeia and more effort by all parties to see this work. As well, it will require more military successes to boost morale and increase engagement. It will not be easy, but it is worth fighting for. |
