Editable textbox question; curious character substitutions

I noticed that I can't begin a string in an editable textbox with the '<' character. The Epee engine substitutes the '=' character (perhaps you can't begin a string with the '<' character due to some C++ restriction). Was this by design, or is it a bug of some sort?
