National Zoo of Canada The National Zoo of Canada is an accredited member of the Environ Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Background In 2009, the Canadian government decided to build a national zoo as a project. The government chose a serene landscape next to a large forest near Ottawa, Ontario as the location for their national zoo. Still in it's construction phases, the National Zoo of Canada plans to house over 40 different species of animals and to have a dolphinarium attraction. Here are pictures of what's finished so far . . . The Information Centre is still being furnished: ![]() The only completed exhibit is the Ibex exhibit, located in a small patch of trees: ![]() Something appears to be under construction here: ![]() More updates coming soon! |

Thanks everyone for the comments! I really appreciate them! Update The National Zoo of Canada is proud to announce the completion of the Snow Leopard exhibit! It is very unique and complex. The little body of water in the exhibit actually goes through small pipes that go to snow generators in the roof, and the snow just falls down into the exhibit. We have enough water because when the snow melts it usually goes into the water, and it turns back into snow. Near the entrance to the Snow Leopard exhibit: ![]() Our Snow Leopards: ![]() Look at the snow just magically fall into the exhibit. It makes the Snow Leopards feel more at home: ![]() A current overview of the zoo: ![]() Hope you like it! |

Thanks smansam! Update With many donations pouring in, including a donation of 1.8 million dollars, the National Zoo of Canada has started building it's Africa section. The first area of Africa is called Journey in the Nile. Currently, two out of four exhibits in Journey in the Nile are completed. Here is the first completed exhibit, the Greater Flamingo: ![]() The second exhibit is home to our Nile Crocodiles: ![]() Here's the other croc. I like this picture for some reason: ![]() I appreciate comments, and I hope you like what's completed in Journey in the Nile.

Thank you Bruno. NZC Holding Facility While the Journey in the Nile and other exhibits are being completed I decided I'll give everyone a tour of the NZC (National Zoo of Canada) Holding Facility. This is where animals that have been adopted by us are kept while we build them an exhibit. It also acts as a quarantine facility, as we try to reduce the risk of epidemics in the zoo. Here is the entrance to the NZC Holding Facility: ![]() Inside the left exhibit in this building is the temporary home of our Syrian Brown Bears, who recently came from Southwick's Zoo. Here is a picture of one of our bears: ![]() Here is the whole temporary habitat for our bears: ![]() The view from the outdoor paddock: ![]() We have two smaller indoor exhibits outside the Large Animal Holding Centre. Here is a curious Red Panda in it's exhibit with a lot of plants: ![]() Here's the other Red Panda (it looks so focused): ![]() Now here's one of our Wolverines creeping through it's indoor exhibit: ![]() Here's the other Wolverine: ![]() Now here's an overview of the facility: ![]() The bottom left exhibit are the Red Pandas, top left exhibit are the Wolverines, and the bottom right exhibit are our Syrian Brown Bears. Comments greatly appreciated! |

Thanks Bruno. I'm glad you're following the NZC. If a couple people comment I'll post the rest of Journey in the Nile and a sneak peek at the big project.

Thank you BloodStricken! NZC Holding Facility Update To complete our Journey in the Nile exhibit, our hippos have arrived and are currently in the Holding Facility. Here's one of our hippos: ![]() The temporary habitat: ![]() The exhibit at the right of the Large Animal Holding Centre is for semi-aquatic animals, so it has a pool as an outdoor exhibit: ![]() A couple of comments and we'll leave the Holding Facility and go back to the zoo.
