Renny ~ Toxarys ~ Anjali
|
The hot sun beat down on the children’s heads. Unconsciously they bowed their shoulders to try to lessen deadening heat. Renny fidgeted as she stood in line with the other orphans. It was Sunday and they had each been given a clean, standard issue smock or pants and shirt. Renny hated Sundays because the clean smocks were itchy and took days to break in. As she stood, Anita from fifth form shoved her hard, making her stumble. Renny glared angrily at the ground. She had learned early that showing her anger at the bullies invariably led to more bullying. The front gate squealed in protest as it swung open. Renny looked up and gaped at the people entering the courtyard. Two Praetorian Policemen strode in, all swagger and crisp uniform and shiny boots. But what really made Renny gawk was the Scanner hovering between them. Her body was held in a strangely ridged position and Psi-goggles covered the top half of her face. Renny had never seen a Seer this close before. Everyone knew about them but the orphans only leave the orphanage once a month on adoption days. The trio went to the head of the line where all of the 7th form teens were. Slowly they walked down the row, every once in a while the Scanner would stop and stare at one of the children before moving on. Methodically they continued, 6th form, 5th, 4th and finally 3rd form. Renny’s hair stood on end as the Scanner paused before her. A warped copy of herself reflected back from the Seer’s Psi-goggles. Time dragged for hours or seconds when the Seer opened her mouth and said in a breathy, low voice, “This one is Powered.” The policemen turned toward Matron Odium who was holding a clipboard. Renny hadn’t even noticed her there. “This one is Renenutet, no last name. Very little is known about her. The records were destroyed in a fire 8 years back. We know she was found on Talos Island but she has no memory beyond that. She seems to be one of those fish-people. We would have sent her back but the Emperor only knows what those savages would do with her.” Renny’s face tightened as she listened to the Matron spew out equal parts self righteousness and vitriol. The policemen listened to the Matron’s words then turned to regard the scrawny, blue skinned girl before them. “You are special. You have a gift that can help the empire grow and become great. You want that don’t you?” one of them asked. Renny cocked her head to the side, considering their words. The empire hadn’t been all that great for her but perhaps it would be different outside of the orphanage. Seeming to sense her reservations, the policeman knelt down so his eyes were on level with the mer-girl’s, “You could change things. Change how the orphanages are run. Change how the children are treated. Not only that, we know other people like you. Meridians. You can live near them and train to become great.” Renny’s eyes widened as she realized the what he was offering. Without a moment of hesitation she placed her small hand in his gloved one. They walked out of the dusty courtyard into the clean, shining streets of Paragon City…Renny didn’t look back. |

I like the scene you set here, it's mood is a cross between Matilda and Oliver. Nicely done. |

Renny ~ Toxarys ~ Anjali

Renenutet stood silently beside General Nikias' throne. Her face was carefully blank, showing none of her dislike of the Mer warrior. Every Friday he personally heard the progress report of each leader in his unit from lieutenants to lowly field commanders. They all thought it was a kind gesture but the mer girl knew better. The general used his considerable empathic gift to ferret out the least sign of guilt. His unit was remarkably free of resistance spies because of this. Renenutet's own empathy was not nearly so strong but it was enough to hide her disgust from the general. Renenutet gazed out at the crowd as the ebb and flow of emotion pressed against her mind. Her gift may not be as strong as the general's but it also did not require the focus that his did. Like the buffet of a breeze, Renenutet sensed the emotions around her at all times. One of the field commanders shifted his weight in boredom and glanced up at the Emperor's flag hanging in state behind the general's throne. Hatred flared to life in the commander, a razor spear of crimson, rending the emotional flow of the room. The emotion was masked perfectly by the commander's blank and slightly bored expression. Renenutet acted without hesitation, stretching her hand out and throwing a cage of pure magic around the offender. Silence echoed through the room as those closest to the commander edged away from him. Treason is the most contagious disease on earth and is always fatal. General Nikias turned to the Mer girl with a questioning lift of his eyebrow. Renenutet returned his gaze with a serene countenance, "That man is a traitor to the empire." she stated in a calmly confident tone. The general turned his gaze to the accused man who was now covered in a fine sweat of fear. Without shifting his glare, he addressed the child sorceress, "Get me proof." The sharp tap of Renenutet's slippers reverberated through the hall as she lightly walked to her captive. "Corporal...Hadyn," she said with a quick look at his badge. "Sorceress, I am loyal to the empire, I swear it! Ask my men. None is more outspoken than I!" he cried in panic. Renenutet's eyes narrowed in annoyance, "Your words are not needed." She tilted her head, as if considering a new thought, "Resistance traitors are very loyal to their cause. Foolishly loyal. It breeds pride. Look around you Corporal," she gestured to the leaders standing at attention. "These men are proud to wear the White and Gold. Proud of their symbol of loyalty. You are proud of the symbol you bare as well. Isn't that so?" Corporal Hadyn's eyes gleamed with hope, "Yes!" The girl's mouth curved in a cruel smile, at odds with her young face, "I'll just bet you are." She raised her hand again, one finger glowing a fiery red, and began gently tracing lines across his chest. Everywhere her finger touched molten fire burst from his uniform. Corporal Hadyn screamed in agony, unable to flee the torture. His screams made no impact on the morbid girl as she continued her strange tracings. The fiery gashes connected causing pieces of his uniform to fall away until he was left naken from the waist up. His chest and back were covered in livid red weals, but they did not cover the other mark adorning his chest. The resistance symbol was tattooed in black ink over his left pectoral. "Over you hear, how sweet," Renenutet said condescendingly before turning to Generla Nikias, "Your proof." The general nodded and motioned to the guards. Renenutet dropped her holding spell, allowing the guards to take Hadyn to the execution block. As he passed the sorceress his eyes darkened with hatred before he spit one word at her. "BITCH!" |

~ Osanna ~ Sonali ~ Nerissa ~

Friday reports again. This was a gruling process, but one that Nikias instisted on conducting himself. She was not sure why she was asked to be there each time, but she took it as a sign of trust that he wanted her at his right hand. She stood, at attention, body still but eyes roving the room. On his other side was a small dark haired mer girl with dead eyes. She scanned the room as well, but her demeanor was much more the hunter where as Osanna was only here to make sure that the general himself was safe. She'd been in Nikias' service for almost a month at this time, and had found it profoundly more comfortable that she'd ever been with Lambros. Somehow he knew what she needed before she did, and often anticipated her wants in the same way. He took care of her, and in return she of him. It was a strange relationship, but it seemed to work for both. A magic cage sprung up in front of her, the energy surrounding a now nervous looking man and the girl pointed to him accusingly. Osanna snapped back to attention. She'd been letting her mind drift. A dangerous occupational hazard. She grimaced at herself, so stupid. "Traitor" Osanna's head whipped back to look at the man in question. Searching for some sign that he was one of them. Beratting herself for not noticing him first. She could not let this tiny seahorse out do her. She could not loose her place on his staff... Going back to Lambros would be even more painful than being broken away from him. The child strolled down the row, confident in herself. It was annoying. Raising her hand, she started to peel the poor mans shirt from his frame with a blade of flame. Only to expose a sure sign of his treachery. Osanna smiled. If she could not detect them as efficiently, she knew for a fact she could not be outdone when it came to her martial skills. As the man was being drug away, yelling like a pathetic animal, Nikias turned to Osanna and said "You will take care of this issue?". "Of course sir" she said smiling. She turned to follow the struggling man from the room. Pausing for only a second to motion the guards standing near the door. She would take care of him, cleanly but not lacking the lesson that she was sure his soul would remember into the next life. No one threatened her master. No one. She turned the corner from the doorway of the room on a sharp heel, parting the crowd who's jaws stood agape as they drug poor Corporal Hadyn to his doom. His eyes screamed with his knowledge of his fate, and his fear shone like a mirror from the eyes of the gathering officers as she moved through them. She did not think it possible, but smiled at the aspect of their eyes getting even larger as they witnessed his two companions being drug down the hallway behind her. She had no proof of their disloyalty, but it was better to be safe and efficient, than sorry and merciful. A pity they did not choose a seat near someone else this day. Oh well. |
