GLOBAL NAME: @Samantha Green, @LaReina

CHARACTER NAME: Apolline and Naphtali

POWERSET/ARCHETYPE: Defenders: Kinetic/Electric; Kinetic/Dark

CHARACTER INFORMATION:

While out to play under the supervision of their old nurse, as was their typical schedule, the 4-year old girls explored and played around the large estate that belonged to their wealthy parents. As the sun began to dip over the horizon, the old nurse suddenly felt overwhelmed with the need to rest her eyelids and was quickly asleep before another thought crossed her mind.

Lingering nearby watching the trio, cold lips curve upward, the smile never reaching her eyes, she watched now as the two little ones were unattended, waiting in the waning light...

Little Apolline, older by just one minute, was intriqued by glimmers of light a short distance out of the gates. Fascinated, she went on her little feet to follow, arms outstretched. Little Naphtali, meanwhile, stayed near the softly snoring old nurse, content to observe the dancing fire flies at her fingertips.

Apolline's story:

As she neared the glimmering lights, they seemed to withdraw even further away. Determined, she kept on, the lights just out of reach...Now the glimmers became nearer, but wait! Another appeared to her left and quickly disappeared only to appear on her right, flashing loud enough now for little Apolline to hear the unnatural -zings- that suddenly accompanied the flashes.

Uncertain and suddenly scared, she looked over her shoulder at the way she had come and realized the old nurse and her sister were no longer in sight. In fear, she turned to retrace her little steps, but suddenly stopped in her tracks. Before her, flashes zinged in and out, swirling away then back, growing in numbers..and blocking her path. She looked desperately left and right, turning in a small circle, breathing heavily, her little shoulders lifting and falling with her fear. The gathering of lights became louder and louder as they neared her small frame..the zings causing the hair on her arms to rise. Too late, little Apolline realized she had stumbled upon a field of electric eels, too many to overcome. As the zings grew louder and louder in her ears and the lights flashed faster and closer, little Apolline gave all her strength to shout as loud as she could--in the same instant--her innate kinetic ability came to life and enveloped the eels into a massive ball of power, russling the leaves and stirring the grass. A sharp flash of light disturbing the growing night...as little Apolline falls in slow motion to the ground, alone.

Naphtali's story:

Minding her own little game, Naphtali made pretend-talk with the fireflies. Suddenly, something in the air did not feel right to Naphtali. She stood up abruptly, scattering the fireflies with her motion. Quickly, she looked around for Apolline, finding her gone, then towards the nurse, who never seemed to tire while caring for them, fast asleep on the bench several feet away. Too quickly, a sinister shadow encompassed the clearing, enveloping Naphtali, stilling her limbs, making her feel drowsy and weak. Her fear became real, mirroring what she now knew, was also her sister's fear in whatever place Apolline happened to be.

With every ounce of her strength, Naphtali tried to scream to alert her nurse. But as her fear grew, she could feel Apolline calling, reaching for her. Her eyes slowly adjusted in the gloom, finally seeing the face of a beautiful woman in dark garb floating her way, arms outstretched towards her. Before she could grasp what was happening, the connection between Apolline and herself overwhelmed her--her head was suddenly thrown back as her little frame tensed up, the innate kinetic ability bursting outward in a large ball of energy (simultaneously with Apolline).

The beautiful woman stopped in mid-reach and gasped as pain seared through her, feeling herself drained of her own dark powers. Before her, the little child stood still, opening unfocused eyes, eyes that now held traces of her missing powers. Snarling in agitation, she summoned what power she had left, chanting words only she understood. Before the child could break completely from her state of confusion, the woman raised up a slim hand, bringing forth dark tentacles that encircled both her and the child. Together, the child and woman disappears in a haze of lingering darkness.

Epilogue:

The strength of their kinetic powers shook the grounds up to the house and through the forrest, shaking avian species out of their nests and homes. Doors and windows of the house opened, as the inhabitants came out to investigate the disturbance. The old nurse runs up to the house in tears...

A search ensues for the missing children long into the night. At last, a guard brings forth small, unconscious Apolline, her body aglow. With their torches held high around the small clearing, they finally notice the patch of dead grass, the only sign that Naphtali had been there.

Her father utters low in anguish: "A sea witch!"
...

Apolline grows up under the watchful eyes of their doting parents, everywhere she went, a bodyguard accompanies her. In private, she toils and practices her unusual electrical ability. The memory of that fateful day a hazy recollection. For all appearances, she is normal, but deeply, she feels the ache of her missing sister--who's connection she has felt grow dimmer year after year, until nothing was left. But no one spoke of Naphtali around the house unless it was in hushed tones. Determined, Apolline swore to Poseidon that she would find a way to her sister, bring her back, and restore peace to their parents' minds. When the call came to assist the surface Atlanteans, Apolline quickly took advantage of the opportunity. Although they resisted, her parents ultimately gave in, sending a guard to follow closely, without Apolline knowing.

Living with the reclusive Ishtar, Naphtali was raised without warmth or shows of affection. But as the years passed, Naphtali learned it was best to keep quiet and to herself when not summoned by Ishtar to be 'schooled' in her dark arts. She learned especially not to mention her parents, as it seemed to rile the sea witch to anger and lash out at her. (Ishtar had loved their father, but he chose their mother instead for wife; bitterness ate at her, vengeance to hurt the father was what drove her to kidnap one of the children).

The Present:

Often, the sea witch would send Naphtali to stealth the surface and bring back knowledge of the surface dwellers or rare items that she believed would restore her youth and powers to its former strength. It was on one such trip to the surface that a chance meeting finally brought the twins face to face, at last. An initial awkward moment, soon fills with joy as they measure each other, their kinetic connection humming through them, uniting them uniquely as only twins can experience.

(Apolline returns home with Naphtali, a big hoo-haa party and extended stay to catch up with parents, etc. Ultimately, with many visits home, they return to the surface to extend their special powers and abilities to assist the surface Brethren. The sea witch finally conceeds defeat, her dark powers gone with age, she lives still in seclusion, and manages to find some joy in her seahorses until the end of her days.)

:P
(I hope we pass!)
