I'm going to go to a friend's house this weekend, and there will be four people for ze board games. I was thinking Dungeon Twister, Descent, and maybe one other one. But I can't decide what. |

Yeah, I heard that one was good. So, today is Magic instead, but as for what I was talking about before, I think the third game is Arkham Horror. |

Have you tried Beowulf? We just tried it. It's kind of like Lord of the Rings, only it's every man for himself, and there's poker-style bidding. |

Risk is so bad. They need to make a good light game where you pretend to be world-conquerers. |

Risk has simple rules and lets you be an asshole. That's pretty much all I want from a boardgame. I don't think I've ever seen a game finish, though. |

South America is actually pretty bad as a stronghold unless you also have North America, because North America can pretty much always smash south America. |

So, tonight we played the new Talisman, which is pretty much just like the old Talisman. Also, we actually played Scene It, at which I ruled. I mean, when you're playing Scene It against people who haven't seen like, The Godfather, well, you get the idea. |

Risk is so bad I've written at least two essays on how bad it is. The thing is, it's fun to roll dice, and to have a board with a map and pieces on it showing which countries are yours and how well defended they are. That part is great. And I know some people really mind the luck, but I don't. Where it sucks is in the player elimination, the politics, and the ranking mechanism. More specifically, 1) players are eliminated, so maybe you have to go find something else to do, or worse, your friends lose and go find something better to do, 2) it's all about convincing other people to team up with you, and all of those games are identical, as Richard Garfield points out, and it's no fun whining every game, as I point out, and 3) all losers look the same. Compare Scrabble. Players aren't eliminated. The player to your right can help you, but you can't help them, so so much for that. And at the end we all have scores showing how well we did. You can play a game of Scrabble knowing from the start that you won't possibly win, and enjoy the whole game. |

Tonight we played a bunch of Castle Builder, and two games of Wits and Wagers, which was because we had 7 people and what can you do. It's a trivia game where you guess a number and then bet on whose number you think is the closest but not bigger than the right answer. I won the second game because I was the only one who knew that on the moon you weigh 1/6th of what you do on Earth. Man, I thought everyone would know that. |

Okay I looked the game up, and actually when I said "world-conquerers" I meant this world, not just a world in general. I mean, most of Risk's appeal comes from the fact that it lets you invade Great Britain from Iceland. It is not the same if you are invading the Sea of Tranquility or whatever. |

the civilisation board game (the new one, not the AH one) does that and is pretty good I suppose it does have politics though since that tends to pop up in conquest games automatically unless you specifically design to avoid it |

Oh. Well, that's a good point. You might want to check out Risk 2210. It's Risk, but fixed. It's pretty much 1000 percent better. There are ocean spaces now, so even Australia has like three ways in. And the ocean groups are also regions, so there are way more region bonuses that it's possible to get. |

Oh, and instead of getting men every turn, you get money, and you use the money to either buy men or buy cards. And the cards do stuff. And there are five different types of cards, so you have to decide with the cards what your general strategy is. For example, cards from the diplomacy deck are more defensive, while cards from the naval deck reward you for taking over seas. |
