I was going to type up a long thing explaining the rules but instead I'll explain as we go.

Right now the board looks like this:

we're playing black, so we get the first move, but our opponent gets a free six points at the end of the game, and also wins ties.

Do we want to play in the center or the edges or the corners?

At the end of the game, the board will look something like this:

each player gets one point for each intersection they surround, and one point for each captured stone. The captures are:

so here white wins by 1/2 point

The corners! Since we're trying to surround territory, it's easiest if we can use the edges of the board to help. The corner is also a source of strength; if a group has control of the corner; it is harder to attack.

In that spirit, we will start by playing Q16. There's a dot there, so it must be good:

Why not T19 then?

If we play too close to the corner, it doesn't surround many points, and the stone might not have enough space to survive:

If we play too far away, our opponent can play closer to the corner and still live, stealing it from us:

The 4-4 point is one of the options that forms a good balance between the two

I always sort of entertained the idea that I would pick up go in my retirement, but by then the game may just be dead

hopefully not. The reaction to AlphaGo is still in the 'hey cool, a bunch of new strategy' stage, so the long-term effects aren't clear, but I think there's still a game even when everyone has superhuman computers in their pocket.

Chess still seems to be doing okay, at least, and I think computers are more helpful for learning chess than go.

So our opponent has made a few moves, and like normal the first four moves are in each corner. The 3-4 stones at R4 and D17 are the other common way of playing in a corner during the opening.

So now there are a few options:

-Play P3. This move makes the bottom right corner completely ours, so unless something unusual happens, we will get points at the end of the game
-Approach the bottom left at F3. This move threatens to take the corner, so while our opponent responds to that we can build on the bottom side
-Play D15. This is like P3, except it prevents our opponent from securing the top left

and oh look our opponent moved. I'll try to play a fighting sequence here, but I don't know if my opponent will indulge me.

so if we're going to fight I should probably explain capturing: if a stone or blob of stones is completely surrounded by opposing stones, it is captured and removed from the board. We get one point for each captured stone

Here each of the black groups is one move away from being taken:

Spoiler: click to toggle

And after white takes them they would look like this:

This is a famous fighting pattern called the avalanche joseki. It's also a pattern I don't know very well, so I might screw it up and have all my stones die. Exciting!

I wish i could post more about it, but I don't remember it well, and I'm definitely not allowed to look it up while i'm playing it out. Maybe i'll post about it after it's been played.

Our move at C17 is a cut; it separates the white stones at D17 and C16. Connection is an important part of this game--unless the cutting stone is captured, they each have to live by separately, making it more likely that one will be captured.

But, our cutting stone at C17 is also cut off and wants to find a way to survive. This is why positions with lots of possible cuts (like the avalanche) often lead to a fight. When a lot of things are cut apart, you end up with a lot of weak stones everywhere, all trying to capture each other.

c17 is also an atari, which just means that it puts opposing stones (D17 in this case) one move away from being captured
