Second day into the month, and figured it was time to start a new Random thread.

Made an appointment Monday afternoon to get a vaccination. Normally, I wouldn't need it, but apparently to be allowed to register for something, I had to have two versions of it. The first I did back in 2015 before I emigrated, so I'm getting caught up now; even though I should've had it eons ago when I was younger. I just don't have any previous record of it before the 2015 shot.

So, I decided to try my hand at some baking tonight. The inspiration came to me this afternoon when I was picking some things up at the local grocery store. I wanted to make a Canadian dessert: butter tarts.

Unfortunately, they didn't have pre-made tart shells, and I was too lazy to make the tart dough myself. So, I bought a frozen pie shell, made the filling (consisting of brown sugar, butter, a pinch of salt, a bit of vanilla extract, and an egg). Most people use raisins on the bottom, but for a change, I used walnuts. 19 minutes in a 425 Fahrenheit oven (and a half-hour to cool after coming out of the oven) later, and it turned out relatively good. I think Fluffy and I have a new special occasion dessert. :D

I haven't done any baking (or any cooking) in a long time... not enough time/energy... but one Canadian dessert that I really wanna figure out someday is Pets de Soeurs (nuns' farts lol)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pets_de_s%C5%93urs

I got pretty close, using Pillsbury crescent dough rolled out and then a mix of maple sugar, brown sugar and butter... but I could never get the filling to STAY, every time I baked them the sugar would melt and leak out the bottom, you ended up with lace-y sugar cooled around the rolls, which was still good... but not what's meant lol

My mother used to bake this all the time but she'd use pie dough. No maple syrup, only brown sugar.

Oooh, baking; I haven't done any in quite a while. I make quite a yummy sugar-free cream cake if I do say so myself. :D

So I'm off to Canada in a couple of days! I've been SO busy but I'm so excited! I just hope I can get everything done that I need to before I leave. :rolleye:

I am coming to the end of my nursing training, working overtime and... Decided to take an Italian A level in September. Someone remind me why? (other than I love Vecchio!) The local community college had super cheap enrollment and in a fit of insanity I signed up. Uh... 🤣

BG, you're freaking awesome! If Italian is something you enjoy learning about then it won't seem so stressful and it it might even be a stress reliever for you. I do hope the job calms down though.

Baking is one of my favorite things to do. Cake especially!

So, what's everyone been up to in the nearly full week since there were any posts other than livestream announcements?

I'm taking a much needed break from packing up the last six years of my life. Feeling kind of mellow about it - this is the longest I've lived anywhere since leaving home, and much has happened whilst I've been here. But I'm buying my own place now and it's in a lovely, quiet countryside only about a half hour away.

Sobering but also exciting, exciting but also tiring. Did I mention I'm still juggling this with an overnight job assignment? :rolleye:

Hope you're settling in well.

I've been trying to get a hold of Dolfyn via private messages since I believe she is in Montreal already, but I haven't heard from her yet.

Been busy with my day job for the most part, and struggling to find the energy to write after I come home most nights.

On the plus side, I was finally able to list the pre-order for electronic copies of my latest novella on Amazon this past weekend (was already available for pre-order on the other major e-retailers) ahead of its' eventual September release.

Also, Fluffy and I finally got around to cracking open my Corner Gas DVDs tonight. She's enjoying the understated humor of the show, so far, and we plowed through the first five episodes in a couple hours. :)

working like crazy for me too *sigh*

this past week I was also taking care of the horses for the lady I used to work for (and doing housework for her AirBnB guests) so I was super tired... and she's already asking me for TWO weeks next month *le sigh*

one of the nights I went out there, I managed to get TO the farm, but my battery immediately died (miracle really, since I had wipers/headlights/radio/windows/fuel pump, all pulling electricity on the 30+ mile ride home)... dad came out and jumped it, but we had to get a new alternator, at least it was free thanks to the warranty at AutoZone

trying to gear myself up for a lot of work around the house, I want to get the carpet in my room done this year (the only room we didn't do new carpet in) because knowing my luck, if I wait any longer they'll discontinue that pattern or something... but in the (slow) process of cleaning out my room, I decided, if I'm going to go that far, might as well paint it *hands* and if I'm gonna paint, might as well paint the whole house *more hands* lol so now I've got 6 little jars of sample paints in my room and little color squares on random walls

I did get to go to Megacon which was super fun (and added to my home-redo-list: gonna do geek art in my office), the actor I wanted to see (Gregg Sulkin from Marvel's Runaways) cancelled literally the last minute... but Teresa (my bff) got to see Jason Momoa, and it's always fun to be around other geeks so it wasn't a total loss (although it hurt the $$ account)

Ahh, cons. Wacky, expensive fun.

Moving all my stuff tomorrow although I won't actually be able to occupy the premises until final closing next week. But the more I pack, the more I feel like RayV looking around the squad room and sighing wistfully before he leaves for Vegas. :-/

I've been trying to get a hold of Dolfyn via private messages since I believe she is in Montreal already, but I haven't heard from her yet.
Greetings from my holiday! B) Apologies for being MIA. I spent a week in Western Canada with lots of sightseeing & travelling with family. I'm now in New York staying with a friend until Friday, when I head up to Montreal by bus. So I will be free to catch up with whoever is available to join MacKenzie & me on Thursday 28th & Friday 29th of June. I'm having a ball so far! :D And I still have a faint hope that somehow I'll get to meet Paul Gross on this trip! :rolleye:

I hope you do get to meet PG, although I'll be insanely jealous.

I can't wait for my vacation. First I just gotta get through training the newbies. Then I gotta decide where to go. My Europe plans fell through :(

I've got a couple of hours to drive to Montreal, half a day to take in the sights, and a couple of hours to drive back. That's two days....out of which one I got to spend with MacKenzie and Dolfyn!
RD's Left Brain

RD, Montreal is 283 miles from here. That's four and a half hours' driving time each way.

Okay, so at 120 miles an hour, that's....two and a half hours. I save a day.

(I'm sorry, Dolfyn - my brain goes weird places when a quotable DS moment comes up. :P )

Wonderful to hear that you're having such a nice time Up Above. I don't know how you feel about cold weather, but hopefully this is a nice break from it. How was the trip up? Not too long and strewn with potholes?

So given a little over an hour of flying time from Boston, there is a very, very slim chance that I *might* be able to pop by for part of Friday the 29th....but it depends on how long it takes to get from the airport to downtown Montreal. MacKenzie, any idea? (Driving would take over 6 hours if I took my Riv, seeing as I don't like to drive it on freeways at its age.)

CC, when is your vaca? I think we've discussed a possible visit before, haven't we?

Google says a 25 minutes drive from the Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Airport to the downtown area. There are also bus shuttles to and from the airport.
Would you really get a plane ticket for such a short trip though?

I'm terribly torn between spending hundreds of bucks on air fare for a two-day trip and meeting up with you and Dolfyn, if I'm honest.

Also, ICYMI, your old metro trains are making their last runs this week before they give way to the rolling, articulated wind tunnels replacing them.

Excerpt from a Trains Magazine article on the last hurrah:

Quote:

After Monday's stint on the Yellow Line, Tuesday's rush hours will see it rolling along the Green Line, its last stomping ground. On Wednesday the train will move over to the Orange Line for the rush hours, before dropping 3 cars for the last hurrah, the system's Blue Line, where the fleet has never operated in regular service.

Enjoy the relatively still air in those old trains whilst you got it!
