I wish Lidnsay had made a reference to her time in jail in France or even a nod even a simple, "I don'† think I'm supposed to be here." would have been fine. Also, why did Sierra say she auditioned again? Did she audition twice like Izzy? |

Lindsay and beth in jail... It would be funny if Lindsay and Beth were still in there and when the TDWT cast goes to Paris they get the chance to visit Lindsay and Beth in jail. lol |

They never even referenced that in Episode 9... maybe the special has little to do on the season's story? |

I wish Izzy got her Drop of Shame video too. She got eliminated in Jamaica, so why did only DJ get one? (It could mean she's coming back in the assumed reward challenge episode, but I doubt it. Although Duncan didn'† get one in Egypt). |

Here's my review of the season. I've been a fan of Total Drama since 2008, when it debuted on Cartoon Network. I liked the witty writing, the clever characters, and the overall premise. The first season was great (even if all of my favorite characters were eliminated early). So when a second season was announced, I was excited. I couldn't wait to see what kind of plotlines they would continue from the original, and what kind of stories they would come up with. So I think it goes without saying that I was severely disappointed. At first, I was upset that my favorites Cody, Noah and Ezekiel weren't in it. But now, I'm relieved that they weren't. If they had been, they would have been flanderized and derailed into one-dimensional scum. Just look at Courtney and Trent- their characters were handled unbelievably badly in this season. Owen also returned- I guess the writers just couldn't handle him being out of the game so early, so they came up with a poorly-thought-out reason and put him back on the show. The finale was a major cop-out, and how Duncan managed to beat Beth when the other contestants were voting is beyond me. Other than Gwen and Trent's breakup, the whole season was just filler with Duncan and Courtney arguing and Owen making fart jokes. The only good part about the season was Harold, who delivered most of the funny lines and was the only interesting character in the Final 5. So, flash forward to a year later. A new season- Total Drama, the Musical- was confirmed. At first, I was weary...that is, until I found out that Cody, Noah, Ezekiel and Tyler would be in it. This made me ecstatic and gave me newfound hope for this show that had been lost after Action. So, let's get on to the actual season. Did I like it? Only a little. Do you care? I doubt it. But I'm gonna tell you why anyway. Of course, this season had a lot of pros. Noah, Tyler and Cody finally being taken seriously as competitors was refreshing after a season of them doing nothing on the sidelines. Alejandro was an interesting addition, as he seemed to combine the cunning wit of Island's Heather with the suave charm of Action's Justin. He was handled well, especially in the finale, where he's finally given a Freudian Excuse (something that Heather and Justin lacked) and some comeuppance (albeit a little too much). Noah and Tyler were great as a comedic duo and Lindsay finally remembering the latter was nice. The musical aspect is something that I've definitely been enjoying, especially Ezekiel's compelling solo in the first episode. Speaking of Ezekiel, I'm going to say something that I don't think anybody has ever said about him: I liked his stowaway subplot. At first glance, this just looks like a jab against Ezekiel's fans who were expecting some development and characterization from the poor guy. But upon further inspection, it's actually a chilling turn that deepens his character far more than anything else would have- it shows rather hauntingly that Ezekiel would sacrifice anything for victory...even his sanity. Stealing the money from Heather in the finale was a good move, because if he hadn't, she would've taken over Europe and continued being mean to the other competitors. Ezekiel made it so that she could win and give Alejandro his retribution, but not have too much power afterwards. We've gone over the good, now to take a look at the bad: Sierra's stalkerish obsession with Cody was cute at first, but as the season went on, it became apparent that the only reason Cody was there was so that Sierra would have a purpose. Cody's lack of singing and wins after the merge was a huge disappointment. Seriously, he won a total of zero challenges after the teams dissolved. He wasn't that incompetent in Island! Noah and Tyler were eliminated much too early. It was especially frustrating when Noah left specifically to make room for Duncan, because Duncan is totally a neglected minor character who hasn't had two whole seasons to shine. I've never liked Duncan, but my dislike of him escalated into a hatred after this, and it only got worse after he made a deal with Alejandro to boot off Tyler, who didn't deserve it. Duncan was such an Elimination Houdini that Chris specifically ignored the votes just to keep him on! Then there's the Love Triangle. A tired concept that nobody wanted to see. Of course, as soon as he returns Duncan locks lips with Gwen and what's expected to happen happens. The only good part of the triangle was the wicked slug at Duncan we got from Cody (and even that felt recycled from Action). One last thing: Owen. Yes, that little whale has always been the favorite of the creators, who for some reason think the fans like him too. He's given a sad song in Jamaica and an amusing friendship with Noah, but in the end, you know that the writers only did this to make him more likeable. Your opinion may differ on whether this worked or not, but for me, it didn't. After Noah and Izzy left, Owen went back to his fart-joke schtick from last season and took up most of the Sweden episode. He served no purpose at all, and it makes you wonder why the writers are so afraid to just eliminate him already. When Owen was finally eliminated, however, it was extremely satisfying. Now, onto the finale. Was it good? Yes, but it wasn't a satisfying farewell to these characters that we've been following for three seasons. It left a lot of loose ends dangling, like... Will Gwen and Courtney ever make up? Are Gwen and Duncan still going out, or did she wise up? Will Ezekiel, Alejandro and Blaineley survive? Will Courtney come to terms with the fact that Alejandro was using her? Will Owen and Izzy get back together? Will Heather and Alejandro get together, regardless of the episode's events? Will Sierra get better? Among others. Cody was eliminated rather early in the episode, which kind of deflated the excitement quickly. It's just like in Action's finale. What is it with their need to always make the underdogs lose, unless he's Owen? I love (not in a good way) that they just kept piling advantages on Alejandro (the wheelbarrow, the head start) so that we wouldn't expect Heather to win. This never works- every time a team or contestant has an advantage in a challenge, they will lose. No matter what. So, was it a good season? I'd like to call it that, but to be honest, the cons far outweighed the pros. Wasted potential is everywhere with Noah and Tyler's early eliminations, Cody's derailment, Duncan and Owen getting too far as usual, and Courtney's tragic fate. It could have been a lot better, maybe with some new and original ideas rather than relationship drama and "Will They Or Won't They?". The overall score? Island - 7 Action - 3 World Tour - 7 Just about as good as the first season. You may think that this is a good thing, but the fact that Cody and Noah were in it means that it should have been a lot better. Hopefully with Reloaded, the writers will learn to make good use of their characters rather than eliminating the same ones early and having one or two characters who always make it far. So that's my two cents. Anyone who disagrees, I'd like to hear your opinion, and I want to make sure you know that I respect it. Here's hoping for a great fresh start next season! |
