A return ticket from Newquay in Cornwall to Kyle of Lochalsh in Scotland will now cost you £1,002 if you're travelling first class and booking the ticket on the day (although if you book in advance, you "only" have to pay £561). Seriously, who wants to travel from Newquay to Kyle of Lochalsh and has that sort of money? Unsurprisingly, nobody has actually bought one of these tickets...you'd probably be better off buying a second-hand car, using it for the journey, and abandoning it once you'd finished! Anyway, what's everyone's opinion on these crazy rail fares? |

I don't know if penalty fares are uniform across the country, but if it's less than the asking price, you might as well just go on board without one and risk having to pay it. Surely a 1st class train ride isn't worth THAT much! |

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if a penalty fare WAS less. I think you've found a nice loophole there  !
