Well, I'm glad one of them was seen after they were declared "extinct"! However, the article's over a year old, so I wonder whether the dolphin's still alive (I do hope so)? If so, are there many more around?

And I remember less than a year ago that the Baiji became extinct. Besides, having only one sighting is hopeless. For all we know, that would have been the only one, hence it would be a certainty that the species would die out when that last remaining one does. I do hope that in the near future they'll develop the cloning techniques to bring it back to life (as they did with Dolly, but obviously sheep aren't extinct!)

I believe that that's why it was declared "functionally extinct", since there aren't going to be enough to sustain a population, even if a few more are found (unless there's a secret colony somewhere, which there almost certainly isn't).

Anyway, I too hope to see cloning techniques to bring back extinct animals being developed in the not too distant future, hopefully within our lifetimes.

The Devonshirians brought the Baiji back to life. In fact, they accidentally made the Baiji-Kite.

ANyways, who cares! I don't think it's extinct! I'm NOT IGNORANT!

Baiji-Kite?? You know, it'd be interesting if that existed in real life.

Anyway, how long do you think it'll be before Devonshirian technology (like the re-creator) is invented in the real world?

The sea? You know, I don't think anyone ever though of checking there (but it'd be quite a job). Have the been seen there before?

No; but there are other dolphins that are fresh and saltwater, too.

Well, if there's any good reason to believe that the Baiji is alive in the sea in any significant numbers (and, to be honest, I'd be surprised if it was, but we can always hope), maybe they should try checking the waters around the Yangtze next?

Probably not, because they think it's only found in that one river!

That doesn't mean to say it can survive in the Yangtze alone. It remains unlikely, though, that they would be found in other rivers since, as CRK pointed out, they were declared "functionally" extinct (and those last remaining few could well have died since this topic was started).

Coder.

Anyway, for it to be officially extinct, someone has to look at every part of the world at the same time, leaving no stone uturned, etc... Besides, it could have swam into other rivers, or even, the ocean.
All this space to write and I can't think of anything but:

Stoke City 11 next season:

Sorenson
Wilkinson Shawcross Ab. Faye Huth
Lawrence Delap Whitehead Etherington
Tuncay Fuller

Subs:

Simonsen
Cort
Am. Faye
Pugh
Whelan
Kitson
Beattie

True - we can never be certain until everywhere's been checked, and we can always hope it will be re-discovered. Sadly, it doesn't seem likely, but who knows?

Maybe they'll have learnt their lesson and will do that with other endangered species in the future.

Indeed; in the words of Prince Phillip: ""If it has four legs and is not a chair, has wings and is not an aeroplane, or swims and is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it." That was in 1986, so maybe they'll have learned their lesson from such a brilliant piece of witticism!

I doubt they live in the sea around Shanghai. They might be able to survive the brackish water, Franciscanas do anyway. But the trouble is the amount to traffic Shanghai gets, it has been a busy port since 1684 and is full of busy ships. It is not the best place to hide either.

Perhaps they do survive, but I doubt it given the lack of sightings. I hope I am wrong though.
Perhaps after the rivers have bean cleared Amazon River Dolphins or Ganges and Indus River Dolphin could be introduced if no Chinese River Dolphins are found.
