Are guinea pigs rodents?

Before we lost a load of topics, we had an interesting debate between FalconHawk and Michelle over whether or not guinea pigs should be classified as rodents. Michelle suggested that they were, citing some morphology among other things, and FalconHawk was providing counter-evidence. I thought it was good, so we should continue the debate here.

Don't forget that capybaras are in the same family as guinea pigs.

I know that guinea pigs are unique in that they eat their own poop(like rabbits). Other rodents dont do this.

That may be true, but I suppose they aren't rodents.

OK...shall we get back on-topic?

If guinea pigs are rodents, why do they do that other rodents don't?

Coder.

Guinea pigs ( and other cavies) have no visible tails.
All this space to write and I can't think of anything but:

Stoke City 11 next season:

Sorenson
Wilkinson Shawcross Ab. Faye Huth
Lawrence Delap Whitehead Etherington
Tuncay Fuller

Subs:

Simonsen
Cort
Am. Faye
Pugh
Whelan
Kitson
Beattie

That's true...

But rabbits have tails that you can see; but pikas don't.

Guinea pigs have tails, very very small ones. You just cant see them under the fur. Also, Guinea pigs have a specialized gut, very similar to the one a rabbit has.

Is this like in humans (where we still have a tail bone, but no 'tail' as such), or is it something different?

Alright then. I do wish I could see the tails on my sister's guinea pigs, but evidently, they're too short :( .[redit][/redit]

In the 90th people thought that Caviomorpha were a separate order based on amino acid studies on pinny gigs. But it is generally agreed today they are rodents.

And their tails are internal like humans.
