NAME: SPINY DOGFISH
STATUS: VULNERABLE
A vulnerable species is one whose chances of extinction characterize it as threatened but not quite as endangered.

wiki

Commercial use

Spiny dogfish are fished for food in Europe, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Chile. The meat is primarily consumed in England, France, the Benelux countries and Germany. The fins and tails are processed into fin needles and are used in less expensive versions of shark fin soup in Chinese cuisine. In England it is sold in "fish and chip shops" as "rock salmon", in France it is sold as "small salmon" (saumonette) and in Belgium it is sold as "sea eel" (zeepaling). It is also used as fertilizer, liver oil, and pet food, and, because of its availability and manageable size, as a popular vertebrate dissection specimen, especially in high schools.

WHY ITS VULNERABLE
IUCN website

The spiny dogfish or spurdog Squalus acanthias is a small demersal shark of temperate continental shelf seas worldwide. Most stocks are highly migratory, but there is no regional fisheries management for the species. Management is in place in only a few range states and in only a limited part of the range of highly migratory stocks. Although naturally abundant, this is one of the more vulnerable species of shark to over-exploitation by fisheries because of its late maturity, low reproductive capacity, longevity, long generation time (25ż40 years) and hence a very low intrinsic rate of population increase (2ż7% per annum). Population segregation and an aggregating habit make mature (usually pregnant) females highly vulnerable to fisheries even when stocks are seriously depleted. This aggregating habit also means that catch per unit effort (CPUE) is not an adequate indicator of stock status; high CPUE can be maintained even when populations are severely depleted. Some targeted Squalus acanthias fisheries have been documented for over 100 years. Fisheries stock assessments report a decline in total biomass of >95% from baseline in the Northeast Atlantic, where catch effort is effectively unlimited. Mediterranean and Black Sea stocks are also unmanaged, with a >60% decline reported in a Black Sea stock assessment for 1981ż1992. There has been a decline in biomass of mature females of 75% in just 10 years in the Northwest Atlantic, where US federal efforts to manage the stock are hampered by high bycatch, continued exploitation in Canadian Atlantic waters, and regular defiance of scientific advice by US Atlantic states. European demand continues to fuel markets around the world. Fisheries and population trend data indicate that the southern part of the Northeast Pacific stock has also declined through overfishing, but stocks appear stable off Alaska. The only data identified from the Northwest Pacific are from Japan, where landings of spurdog declined ~80% in 1952ż1965, and inshore spurdog CPUE declined 80ż90% from the mid 1970s to late 1990s. Unregulated and expanding target and bycatch fisheries take spiny dogfish in South America (Europe reports imports from this region), where population declines are reported. New Zealand manages the species, which is taken in target and bycatch fisheries, through its Quota Management System. There is only limited fishing pressure in Australia and South Africa, with most catches discarded.

I've heard quite a lot on the news about problems like this in recent years, not just with the spiny dogfish, but with various other species - something certainly needs to be done to conserve the poulations of these types of fish.

I think so too. It just shows how stupid and greedy some humans are <_<. You know, when it comes to this, I personally think supplies should be controlled so that this problem doesn't occur, even if it doesn't satisfy the demand. For these issues, instead of a capitalist demand-satisfaction system, I'd be in favour of a "you get what you're given" one, so as to keep these fish out of threat.

I have heard that there are sustainable stocks of fish, so perhaps they should be used instead.

I heard other fish are being overfished...like orange roughy, swordfish and others....and 100 million sharks are slaughtered every year. (THAT'S FASTER THAN THEY CAN REPRODUCE...THEIR GESTATION IS AS LONG AS A HUMAN'S!!!!)

In that case, the issue with sharks needs bringing to attention in the same way that they're doing with the other species. Apparently, if fishing continues like that, certain species could be extinct within just over 40 years!

Or they can stop all together, forget about sharks and use some other species!

I suppose they could, but then there may then be similar problems with that species.

Cod is vulnerable too.

I've heard that sharks get their dorsal fin cut off, and then dumped back in the water. :crying:

I can't say I've ever liked the supply/demand system which exists with regards to fishing. If fishing were to take place, I think care must be taken to avoid overfishing; the "you get what you're given" system suggested by CG may solve this.

I think people are going to have to be VERY careful when fishing that species; seeing as it's so endangered, it would probably be best to stop completely for now.

I know, I'd agree with that. Those fish are maturing at the age of humans (ex. sharks mature at age 12 - I think.)

Which is sad.
