The system could not make sense of its own input. What little true direction there had been eroded away. It ran from place to place, attempting to follow an impossible objective.
World unknown. Objective unknown. Task unknown. Infiltration protocols chosen at random landed it on a planet, and now it was out in the world. Damaged programming sent it off in a straight, unerring line, a single path, as it tried to complete its programmed, impossible objective. Damaged programs from a hacker had gone far too long without maintence, a weapon had gone far too long without a master. Repeated last objectives had become garbage code compiled into logical missions. And now, even that had decayed. Numerous purple rats lay dead, often with a single strike to the head, for the grave sin of being directly in the machine's path a few nanoseconds too long. Enough that the wildlife had picked up on what was going on and cleared out whenever it marched through a patch of especially thick grass. At no point did it ever adjust its path- It went through all the obstacles in its way. In the near distance, a town- Perhaps a city. It was directly in the path. The machine did not alter its path or slow down. A fearful squeak could be heard as a pack of rats scattered to get out of its way and it continued marching ever forward, undeterred.. |

The destruction left in the small robot's wake hadn't reached civilization yet, but it had drawn attention nonetheless. A single black bird, a normal crow, followed the rogue device from above, casting a watchful eye on its find. This was notable mostly because in this world, the wildlife thatwas 'ordinary' on other worlds was generally never seen, Pokemon making up the vast majority of the world's fauna. This crow was, in fact, no native, and it was no coincidence when, only a moment after the black bird flew off to scout elsewhere, the air off to the side split open and a blonde woman stepped out, shaded under a pink parasol with an ornate blade tip. Yukari yawned and rubbed her eyes on the back of her arm sleepily. It was, after all, quite rare that the youkai woman was active in broad daylight; usually, she was strictly nocturnal. She wasn't in the murderbot's path, and so she didn't seem very concerned as she glided over, using her gap like a flying chair and following the robot from a short distance. "...My, what do we have here?" she mused aloud, tilting her head slightly. "Someone really needs to take better care of their things. Well, might as well see what you have..." She lifted her hand and materialized a small screen, a magic projection of her own personal shikigami system. Not exactly a traditional computer, but the principles were close enough that she could generally connect to mundane technology. With a subtle pulse of energy, she attempted to establish a connection to the robot, creating a nearly invisible strand of magic to serve as a 'cable'. If it had much in the way of firewalls, she'd have to deal with them first, but... |

The bird puffed out its chest in an attempt to make itself seem even larger as it stood defiantly in the robot's path. Behind it, in a groundbound nest several small chicks chirped noisily and frantically. The bird did not move as it stood in the path, as the machine drew closer and raised a bloodied leg. It primed to strike, adn the bird stared it down. But it never moved further. After standing still long enough for the mother bird to realize it had stopped, she rushed to push and carry her chicks out of the machine's path, abandoning the nest in the process. For its own par, the leg lowered slowly, no longer poised to be used as a weapon of destruction, but instead again to support the gestalt's weight.
Yukari would find virtually no resistance from the machine's code. Large swaths of data were corrupted, but here mere presence in the system seemed to be enough to clean the data. A great deal of programming was heavily encrypted and linked, but a small, important bit was made extremely evident very quickly. Callsigns for a master and an objective, both too degraded to make out any useful information. But the space was malleable- Far more easily edited and messed with than the rest of the code. |

...How unexpected. Yukari hadn't expected the device to have so little protection, nor did she expect it to be overflowing with old corrupted data that started to clean itself up even as she scrolled through its systems, skimming over what she could glean without miring herself down in trying to break through the encryption. When she came across the 'master' and 'objective' fields, though, a faint smirk made its way onto her face. Oh, this could be... interesting. Perhaps she could make use of this. Yes, with a few subtle tweaks... Her fingers subtly moved, fiddling with a magic circle that let her enter text into her projected screen. First, to reassign its master.
From there, she entered a few parameters to further define herself in its records, just so there would be no mistake. Once that was done, she paused, watching her screen and the unusual machine, waiting with a quiet smile to see just what would happen. |

Small bits of data could be seen before they were deleted- Peacekeepers, Ingropolis, various objectives, but they were corrupted and deleted almost too fast to process. Within seconds, the entire space was clean and available, and readily accepted her input. A simple few swipes, and all lingering loyalties to Hush and her entire movement were gone, as if they'd never existed. The machine turned to face the new master, then tilted its head up. It had identified her before she'd even finished putting in her name. It collected the necessary biometrics to tag her before she put them in. The turn, the lowering of the body, the submissiveness, all only happened after she put the data in. A carefully crafted series of commands, wired deep in the machine's core.
The machine was still, lifeless, as Yukari worked. It did not move in any way, even as the bravest of the wildlife came near to investigate the suddenly stationary killer. |

Fascinating. It was readily apparent to Yukari that someone had in fact wanted this machine to easily change hands. That meant it certainly had nothing to do with her enemies of greatest concern, there was no way they would ever design anything of theirs to easily be taken by others. Who, then...? And could she still trust that it would be useful to her? The machine had already proven itself to be a deadly weapon before she had even encountered it. If its original creator perhaps wished to come back for it... ...Well, no. That would honestly be nonsensical. It wasn't as though those two would be useful to anyone but the Lunarians--she was sure of that much. So really, as long as she kept her contact with it to a minimum so it couldn't store much on her capabilities, she didn't have much to lose.
Yukari quietly added a line of code that indicated that, should the two objectives conflict, 'Objective1' would take priority. "There we are," she said, mostly to herself. She then smiled fondly at the little machine. "I suppose you'll need to be dropped off for your assignment. Be glad that's no trouble for me." She was, of course, well aware that this robot almost certainly had no concept of 'glad', but talking to it was still fun. |

And like that, it was done. The failing code had been repaired by the action of rewrite and reprogram. Garbage data was gone, the machine was operating at peak efficiency. Deep within its code, the Core began launching a search over the CHOMPnet for information on the target and lunarians. Relevant data was passed along to the Swarm control centers where necessary- Where to strike them, how to kill them. Very little else was relevant, at the moment. Her quip passed on ears that heard but did not understand. With no actionable orders, the machine turned, back the way it came, and began to trudge through its carnage as it retraced its steps. The machine had arrived by stowing away on a starship- To find its target, unless intercepted it would merely find another and stow away there again, destroying any obstacles in its way. Of course, the Operator was never an obstacle. That was one of the first things the Programmers made sure to set in stone. |
