The winding road that led from Pewter City to the remnants of Mt. Moon was almost entirely deserted. With the old trails through the mountain destroyed, and the new ones through its shattered stump not yet completed, there was little incentive for the average traveler to pass through. With no variety of challenges available, this inevitably meant that the local trainers, for the most part, found other places to gather. There were, however, two noticeable exceptions.

The first was a tall woman in a battered tank top and a pair of sturdy cargo pants leaning against the side of a sleek, needle-nosed hovercraft. To one side of her a uniform jacket was draped over the tapered prow of the vehicle, while to the other side an enormous firearm was resting on the seat. Her eyes were bright, and her smile was warm as she watched the scene before her.

The second exception was a little girl, perhaps around nine years old, in a pale violet sundress bouncing excitedly by the path. Her shoulder-length hair was the same color brown as the older woman’s, and the similarity of their features spoke to the closeness of their kinship.

“Okay, Mr Cranky,” the girl shouted to the gold-furred rattata in front of her, “finish it off with a Bite attack!” The rodent dutifully flung itself at its opponent – a battered-looking spearow – dodged its weak attempt at a counter attack, and sank its fangs into the bird’s shoulder. It was more than enough, the collapsed to the ground in a dead faint, and the victorious rattata turned triumphantly toward its trainer.

“Yes, yes yes!” The girl rushed forward and wrapped her arms around her pokemon. “We did it aunt Iji! We beat it all by ourselves!”

It was horrible to look at

Red let out a sigh, he had finally built up the nerve to come to the desecration that was once Mt. Moon. It had once been a place of rather beautiful scenery, and lively trainers running about and battling each other. Sure, it was rocks for miles, and the main path led through the mountain itself, but if one were to adventure just a bit off the beaten path and actually climb the slightly more treacherous path, the view of Kanto was rather stunning. Of course, many now would not get a chance to see these views, nor would many even come through here now. The loss of life that had to have happened when this happened...

The sounds of battle caught the trainer's attention. That was odd, seemed like someone had actually decided to come to this place. He quickly climbed over a few of the rocks, taking a look at the sight that was a few meters away from him. The first thing he noticed was the very much non-Kantonian vehicle and large weapon in the seat, prompting him to take a slight step back. It was far from the first time he had seen a weapon while in the multiverse, but it was the first time seeing one that large. His nerves eased slightly as he caught sight of the younger girl ordering a Rattata to fight, and a shiny one none the less!

He crossed his arms and leaned on a rock, the smallest of smiles crossing his face as he watched the young trainer's battle. While he did not make any sort of contact, it seemed he had become unaware of the shadow he had started to cast from his higher position.

The woman's first thought as she noticed the shadow that had crept into view was has it gotten that late already? Then she recognized its shape and the smile slipped from her features. As her hand inched toward her weapon she turned her head just enough to bring the newcomer into view. He was hard to make out with the sun behind him, but her enhancements filtered out enough of the excess light for her to make out the shape of a well-to-do trainer. He wasn't familiar, but he also wasn't armed so she let herself relax.

She hadn't moved much, but the younger girl caught the shift in attention and turned to she what had drawn her attention. Shielding her eyes against the glare, the girl let out a gasp. "A trainer!" She lifted an arm and waved vigorously. "Hey, hey, mister, you want to battle?"

"Mia," the woman said sternly, "aren't you forgetting something?"

Mia turned and pouted. "But, Aunt Iji, didn't you say I was ready to challenge people already?"

"I did say that, yes. But I think there's something you need to do first," Iji said, looking pointedly at the rattata in Mia's arms.

Mia glanced down, and only then seemed to realize that her Pokemon, for all it's spunk and tenacity, was covered in scrapes and scratches from the day's battles. "Oh!" The little girl knelt down, oblivious to the rocky ground or the effect it might have on her dress or knees, and dug a purple spraybottle from her backpack. With great care she began applying the contents to each of her companion's minor injuries, gently massaging each spot as the potion took effect. After a few moments of attention, Mia glanced up at her aunt, who smiled and nodded.

With a gleeful squeal Mia picked up her rattata and dashed over to the stranger, looking up with eager brown eyes. "Can we battle now? Ple~ase?"

Shoot, his shadow had given himself away. The little trainer wanted to battle him, of course, it was a rather typical response when two trainers ran into each other. Why did it seem in recent times it was only very inexperienced trainers seemed to want to pick a fight with him. He always felt the need to have his Pokemon hold back during these sorts of fights, why ruin their hopes and dreams by knocking them out with one well placed Thunderbolt. No, he could just walk away, let her train with some one else...

But where was the fun in that?

He let out an audible sigh, before giving Mia a slight nod in response. The former champion turned around, giving himself some distance between himself and the young girl. In the process of walking, he pulled out a Poke Ball from his belt, and gave it a very slight toss over his should behind him while turned back around as it hit the ground. From the ball emerged Zapper, looking around and seemingly ready for a fight, giving slightly amusing boxing movements with her arms.

With his Pokemon on the field, Red made a motion with his hand towards Mia. She would have the first move.

Mia let out a happy giggle and took a few steps away before placing her partner on the ground, then scampered further back to give the pokemon plenty of room to battle. There was a brief flash of disappointment as she realized that her opponent had selected a pikachu - Viridian forest was just to the south after all - but she quickly squared her shoulders in a childlike approximation of a battler' stance. She had picked this fight, and she was going to see it through, even if her opponent didn't bring out anything exotic. And since her opponent was being kind enough to give her the first move…

“Alright, Cranky,” she snapped, a businesslike edge creeping in beneath her obvious excitement, "hit 'em with a Tail Whip."

More than eager, the rodent pokemon darted forward in a move that, unless dodged, would end with a sudden sideways lurch and a face-full of fluffy tail.

Zapper braced herself for the obvious tackle that was coming her way. Not that it was going to be a problem, she had taken hits from far bigger Pokemon in the past, she would let this one hit her, on her terms of course. Pulling a foot back, the Pikachu readied to catch Cranky in her arms, only to meet a face full of tail. The Pikachu let out a sound that could only be described as "PAH!" as she rubbed her face, she had not seen that attack in a long time and had completely forgotten it existed.

Red cleared his throat, snapping his fingers and pointing off to the side in a small gesture.

The Pikachu let out a small "Pikaaa" before, seemingly, vanishing in a cloud of dust. It was less vanishing, and more darting off to the side with incredible speed, as she pulled around to ram into the rattata with a quick attack.

Mia gasped as her opponent's pokemon came charging out of seemingly nowhere. The Rattata, however, was a touch more savvy. at the last moment it managed to backpedal, turning the pickachu's strike into a glancing blow. It tumbled away before catching itself on a nearby rock and settling into a crouch.

"Okay, Cranky, Hy...." The rodent didn't wait for its trainer's command, instead throwing itself forward in a bodily Tackle.

The Pikachu slid to a stop, having only glanced her opponent. The electric Pokemon was quick to turn around, awaiting the next order that would be sent to her. There was no time, as the shiny Rattata charged full force towards her without her trainer actually giving an order. Even with her speed, Zapper was unable to move out of the way in time, taking the full force of the normal type's attack and sending her back a bit.

Red's eyes widened, the trainer clearly had not given an order for it to tackle. Perhaps the girl had trained it too far without a Gym Badge, leaving it turning into a disobedient mess. Hopefully this was a one off event, and the trainer would regain control of the Rattata in a moment. That was not his problem though, he had to focus on his side of the battle, keep control in this situation like he trained to. Snapping his fingers, he gave Zapper a point with his index and middle finger extended.

The Pokemon gave a nod, electricity beginning to jump off of the red cheeks on its' face. Leaping into the air, the Pikachu let out a cry as a bolt of electricity shot towards the Rattata at lightning speeds.

Cranky had no more tricks left to play and the bolt struck home, momentarily obscuring the shiny in an eye-searing streak of electricity. The lightning faded and the rattata stood rigid, static sparking from its fur, before slumping forward at last.

Mia's hands flew to her mouth. "Cranky!" she cried, moisture welling up in her eyes as she started toward her fallen companion. Before she could take two steps, however, her pokemon heaved itself to its feet. It should have collapsed under the blow; it should have been rendered immobile by the surge of energy running through it; it was hopelessly outclassed, even worse trained... and yet the brimming tears in its trainer's voice was enough to bring the battered pokemon back up for one last go.

"Give it one more, Cranky," the girl cried, her voice almost squeaking with emotion,"HYPER FANG!"

Undaunted, unslowed, the rattata hurled itself toward the pikachu with jaws agape in what might very well be its final burst of energy.

Red gave the slightest of head nods at the fact the the attack had hit dead on. At this point, the battle surely would be over, after all, it was just a youngster with a Rattata . Sure, it was shiny, but still just a mostly untrained one. His eyes widened when he saw the normal type rise back up, a slight shiver going down his spine.

'No no no, please don't make Zapper actually have to hit it again, it's taken enough.'

His thoughts were vain, as he had no time to react to the Hyper Fang directed at Zapper. The Pikachu, in the meantime, had taken it upon herself to celebrate ever so slightly, breaking into a series of poses that left it vulnerable to the incoming attack. Her ears perked up at the girl's screaming, only to turn around and feel the fangs of the Rattata cling onto her torso. The Pikachu let out a series of wails and cries, before her body was covered in a surge of electricity, directing most of it towards the latched on Pokemon in its attempt to get it off.

As the first surge of electricity rippled across the rattata, it seemed to have rather the opposite effect to the one the pikachu intended. The normal type’s muscles seized up, locking both its body and jaw rigid. Only between the waves of energy did its muscles have a chance to relax, and it took three pulses for it to finally come dislodged.

This time, the shiny pokemon did not rise. It lay on the rocky ground, breath shallow, static crawiling across its fur. No amount of stubborn determination was going to save it from unconsciousness this time. Cranky!’ the little girl cried, dashing onto the field. She knelt down next to her tiny companion and, heedless of the lingering jolts of electricity, scooped the rodent into her arms. "Its okay," she said, smoothing its fur with trembling fingers "you did really well. We’ll get you all fixed up. Its okay."

With long, dragging steps She carried her pokemon over to the taller woman and looked up with tear-brimming eyes. Iji hadn’t moved from her spot, but she had pulled a largish yellow crystal from her pocket. She knelt down next to her niece and handed the revive to the little girl.

Mia took the medicine and pressed it firmly against the rodent’s body. There was a tiny flash, then the crystal cracked and dissolved into a fine powder which was quickly absorbed by Cranky’s tiny form. The rattata’s eyes fluttered open but it made no other motion, still feeling the lingering effects of the electrical paralysis. The youngster stared at her partner for a few seconds, then looked up at her aunt plaintively. "I lost, Aunt Iji."

The anomaly felt her heart swell within her chest at the sight. she knelt down and wrapped her arms around Mia and her pokemon both. "It's okay," Iji said, patting the girl's long brown hair, "You did well, you and Cranky both." And she held her close, moisture sparking in her eyes, until Mia began to squirm.

"Aunt Iji, I lost." The woman let go and looked at her niece in puzzlement. "I lost," the girl repeated, "that means I need my credit chip so I can pay up properly."

"Oh," Iji murmured, "right." She dug in her pocket for the slender piece of technology that Mia's parents had placed in her care. "Here it is. Now hand me Cranky. I'll hold him for you while you go take care of that." She handed the chip to the girl and gently took the paralyzed rodent into her arms.

Chip in hand, Mia walked solemnly over to her opponent and held it up for him to authorize the transfer. "That was a good fight, Mister."

Back in Iji's arms, Cranky roused himself enough to sniff the person holding him. With recognition came content, and the rodent clicked his teeth together in disapproval. "Hush, you," Iji said, to low to be heard by the others, "You bite me again and I swear I'm going to thump you back into unconsciousness." Revives weren't that expensive, after all.
