There were five friends (not voltron) that I think had rings, but they helped "save the world".

There was one girl, and a fat guy, and a short guy (pidgit??), ......

I remember the could comunicate with each other by the ring or watch....

The could join together to form a pyramid (like cheerleaders) and then spin to make a whirlwind. If this didn't work on the bad guys, they would jump up to their space ship/plane and then use this. Last resort they would turn the plane into a flaming pheonix!.

They all had coloured suits (sort of like voltron).

I loved this when I was in kinder, gr1 so it was about 1981. No one I have asked can remember this cartoon! This is my last hope!

This is sounding like Battle of the Planets to me - also released (in a different edit) as G-Force, and known to viewers in Japan as Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatcheman.

Of course, I could be wrong, but I don't think I am ;)
