During the 1970s or 1980s,was Anime ever that huge in the UK?.I sometimes stumble on French,German,or Italian Anime sites and they have more Anime than the UK or USA does.During the 1970s and 1980s,Anime shows filled the Italian,German,and French market.They even have more titles than America does.How much Anime did they have in the UK back then than now?. |

I saw first Manga (thats anime isnt it I hope?) when I was about 11 so 1992-1994 kinda time and as I recall Manga was pretty huge even then in Virgin. I never watched much but some friends did. Also some of the French-Japan cartoons were kind of forerunners...things like MCoG were somewhere in between really when you look back (amongst others). |

manga is the printed cartoons in japanese comics and the popular ones are adapted into anime. i used to always call it manga when i was younger. anime is becoming more popular in the uk since miyazaki's 'spirited away' came out into the cinemas. after that a load of his old movies started to come out like 'my neighbour totoro' and 'laporta: castle in the sky'. pixar/disney are introducing anime like this into the mainstream i think. much more engaging with it's values and the like. i think anime mayb perceived in the uk as a bit adult like 'akira' and 'ghost in the shell'. |

don't know about the UK but manga and anime became huge in Holland after Akira Ghost in the Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion. You can buy lots of anime-dvd's in just about every dvd-shop. By the way I LOVE the work of Hayao Miyazaki. He's a genius! |

did you see Howl's Moving Castle? I loved the art work but the story hmm it was like oke the first hour makes sense and all but I got lost halfway through! I think most of Miyazaki's movies work on different levels! You have to watch it several times and every time you discover something new. |

The only time I loved Anime when Cartoon Network was showing Dragonball Z. I loved that show, I hope to find the DVD Series one day, as I can't watch it anymore! Maybe once I can travel, I can find them in other countries since I have a multi region DVD Player at home. I also loved the Street Fighter movies. I may sound like a pervert but the shower scence with Chun Li , has got great animation, but thats just me. But I love the films. I want to get that particular film (not cause of the shower scence) but its a great film and Akuma is in it (I still can't find him!) and I have the Alpha movie version which Ryu is pocessed or something, something to do with Akuma. Not bad but too updated with the newest characters. I prefer the days with E Honda and Blanka and Guile and my childhood crush Chun Li (Yes I have may crushes when I was a kid from Lydia
, Wednesday
and Chun Li
)

I can watch Spirited Away over and over again. It's brilliant! I saw another very good anime the other day about a boy and his little sister trying to survive the American bombing on Tokio during WOII. was the saddest thing I've ever seen. I cried my eyes out :cry: the way they captured the emotions of these children. Pure genius! |

You might want to avoid the film that comes with the Anniversary edition as that is the censored version with said scene removed as well as parts of some scenes and edited lines of dialogue. You can find Akuma in the Calcutta scene (where the Gandhi lookalike gets killed) sitting near a wall. |

I don't even know fliggin why it took sooooo long for anime to hit the UK (longer than US), I mean were we blacklisted or summat? It's ok for France, Spain, Italy et al to get all the stuff way before us too. Is there cultural or historical boundaries here? SLOMOOOOOOOOOOOOOW........zzzzzzzzz First anime I watched, which was called MANGA was Wicked City. We need better relations, comon Gordon Brown, ulp!

Well I guess for the USA back in the 1970s/early 1980s,American companies like ZIV were trying to bring Toei Anime to the American markets.They tried bringing Captian Harlock (favorite of mine),Candy Candy,Flower Girl Lun Lun etc,but it didn't work out.They all went on Kiddie VHS and being in rental shops then.Then,people thought had this sterotype that all cartoons are for kids. Another thing could be those Parent/Cartoon watchdog groups that would not like what is in Anime since most Japanese cartoons for kids can have some scenes that may not be fit for the USA market. I know back in the early 1990s (cicra 1993-1994) Capcom was trying to bring the Megaman/Rockman Anime to the States (which stars the cute red dress Roll and cute red Eddie).But Anime wasn't mainstreamed at the time and Capcom didn't like the idea so I was stuck with the green Eddie and the teenage robotic arm version of Roll.I mean I liked watching it as a kid,but my friend Mimy that came from China got to see the original Eddie and Roll when she was a little girl in the early 1990s which means she's lucky.I mean if you come from China or Japan then,you get to see the original stuff.I remember seeing the red dress Roll at the Children's Musuem in Boston looking at one of the Japanese kids magazines there.At that time,there was no internet then. Also Sanrio/Hello Kitty was really hard to find back in the 1980s to early 1990s.Hello Kitty you couldn't find in mainstream chain stores at the time,you had to go to locally owned toy stores and specialty stores.My cousin Devika was exposed to cute Sanrio characters and had clothes with them on.She would go to Hong Kong alot which means Sanrio was more mainstreamed in Hong Kong than USA. I know the late 1990s (1998-1999) Anime and Sanrio was becoming more mainstreamed.Also when Target first came to my area,they were advertising Hello Kitty,Claire's started carrying Sanrio,and McDonald's had Hello Kitty Happy Meals. Boy,did I expect to type this much.LOL :lol: |
