Right, here's the thing. I've just read last week's TNM show (I know, I'm a bit behind, but I've had a busy couple of weeks and I'm only just getting back up to speed, with everything.) and there were a couple of recurring things that in truth, I've been noticing for weeks, but only now do I want to bring a couple of them up. Let it be known that nothing I say in this post should be seen as a personal attack or sideswipe aimed at anyone - I'm merely making my views heard and suggesting a couple of changes which should hopefully benefit everyone long term. Firstly - matchwriting. It's seemed to me that, for one reason or another, that the quality of the matches have been going slowly downhill for several months now. Back in the 'glory days' when I think CWF was at it's peak, we had at least 4 dedicated matchwriters who would consistently pump out top quality matches every single week. They were seamless, realistic, and exciting. The sort of stuff that sucked you in and made you suspend disbelief. These days, I think that Justin still does an excellent job of writing his matches, and consistently puts out good quality main events time and again. In the same breath, I like to think I put a huge amount of effort into trying to match the quantity and quality of Rish's matchwriting. But I think this is as far as it goes, unfortunately. Now, Ataxia, like I said, please don't think this is a personal attack, because it isn't; I just want to try to get us back on track again as a fed, and make sure every Massacre is a joy to read. But when I'm reading through shows atm, I can tell instantly who has written which match, just from the first couple of paragraphs. This shouldn't be the case, imo. Yes, every wrtier has their own style, but the show should follow the same structure in terms of layout, commentary etc to make things flow as best they can. I think there are some pretty small but crucial details that are often missing from CWF matches nowadays, such as entrances, Ray Douglas introducing the match and each individual participant, and a small paragraph of pre-match stuff before the action begin that I think can have a huge impact on the quality of a match - including them just makes it seem more complete. It doesn't take long, but I think gives a really good impression and is probably enough to turn a good match into a great match. So, a request - if every matchwriter could please consider including the above elements in every match, it would be appreciated, and would I think make the shows that much more enjoyable to read. Secondly - segments. I know segments, storylines etc can be very personal, and I shouldn't try to interfere or say anything about anything that people include in their segs. And I'm not going to. Not directly anyway. But there are still a couple of points I'd like to raise. First - try to keep it realistic. I know this is a creative hobby, but for me, consistently doing crazy shit, unbelievable backstage attacks etc. dilutes the message, and makes your character less shocking. Keep the crazy, wild stuff occasional for maximum impact. Second is an unwritten rule, but one we should all adhere to - Don't use other characters in your segs without permission. If you know you're going to need to use someone in a seg in advance, ask them early. If you haven't got their permission, don't use them, and re-write the seg. If you're happy for a certain handler to use you in all segs (for example, as part of a feud or storyline), let them know so they don't have to keep asking you. But it's a little bit rude to include characters directly in your segs without prior knowledge of their handlers, making them say or do things which could tamper with stories or future plans. Thirdly - layout. Paragraphing, structure, the way it looks on the page. It's all random. Jarvis posted a while back showing how everyone should be doing segs and matches in terms of layout, proper punctuation and structure etc. I can't be arsed to find it, but it's spot on. For those who haven't seen it, please take a look at those of us who have been here for an extended length of time (myself, Rish, Jarvis King, Angel, Dan Highlander et al) and note how we structure our segs and matches, and try to match your stuff so that it stays consistent. Again, something quite small which I personally think makes quite a difference to how a show is perceived. Right... I think that's it. Apologies for the ranty nature of the above points, but I wanted to get these things out there so that hopefully, even if only 50% of people here improve on 50% of the things mentioned, we'll still have a much better show to read and look at. Feel free to berate me and/or disagree with any of the points made above. Rant over. |

I know your not calling me out but I want to point something out to you mitch. I've never been told to include prematch stuff or entrances since I figured Justin would handle that guess I got confused. No biggie though. Also how about posting that format in this thread just so people don't get confused because I sure as hell am at how I am "suppose" to do it. Especially since I still can't get on the (insert curse word rant here) website. Also I want to point out I'm not angry about what was said here but it's not going to be a problem anymore as long as I can get enough stuff ahead of time. Sorry again if I have been causing a downward spiral in the result writing. |

No worries, once I've finished my RP I'll post some kind of format thread, or find the one that Jarvis did. Hopefully it can be stickied here or in the Backstage Business Forum and can become a reference point for everyone when writing segs and matches. And thanks for not taking what I said the wrong way

My recommendation to Rish would be to do what I do and set up a pinned thread stating exactly what expectations are for match-writing. If you outline what each match-writer needs to include then it makes everyone's lives that much easier. |

To be fair concerning the lack of entrances in matches, it's hard to write them when next to no one lists descriptions (other than theme music) in their profile. I would have included them in last week's Battle Royal, but as far as I know, none of the participants have them in their bios and, uh yeah, I'm not going to make up 8 or so entrances out of thin air. I find that it also helps if the wrestlers list some average, normal moves in their profile that I can use in the matchwriting. Sure, flashy moves are great to set up for, but simple ones help me out with setting up to the flashy ones. In my Tully profiles, I've tried to do this to help give the writers some ideas of where to go with my characters. The more options, the merrier, I say. Usually, in a pinch, I'll just go to wikipedia and rummage around for some simple things to include, as long as I figure it's something the people I'm writing for would use. Otherwise, I agree. |

Ah, okay. Never even noticed that there. It might behoove J.Rish to include them in the character bio's then because I use the profile site as a guide for writing the matches. |
