Getting Extreme with Xtreme; The Debut of The Scorpion's Lair

The scene opens in a derelict boiler room; dark, dank and deathly silent, the room is a foreboding prospect for even the strongest of heart and mind. Unsurprisingly, the room appears at first to be uninhabited, aside from the odd rat which scurries quickly across the cold concrete floor. As the camera delves deeper into the darkness, however, a completely new scene unfolds – the light from a solitary lightbulb reveals The Blue Scorpion, sitting amongst a plethora of wrestling foreign objects. Plywood tables, lead pipes and barbed wire cover every available floor space, and like a king at the centre of his kingdom, Scorpio sits amongst the weapons imperiously.

Scorpio: Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to The Scorpion’s Lair! This is where I reside, in moments of celebration, weakness or solitude, this is the place that I often call into in order to dwell on events of the past and to look forward to what the future may hold. And it is from here where I will divulge some of my personal thoughts and feelings to you today, regarding the tournament for The CWF World Championship, and my first round match with Chris Xtreme. But first, an explanation.

Many of you may be wondering why I have chosen today to surround myself with such an array of weird and wonderful weapons. You see, I, like many before me, like to get deep into the mindset of my opponent before each and every matchup. And as you can see (gestures round to weapons littering the floor) this week is no different. For my upcoming first round matchup in the tournament for the CWF World Championship, I believed that it was time for me to get X-Treme (Scorpio forms an X with his arms and smirks sarcastically at the camera) In order to discover how to beat my opponent, I must first understand how his or her mind works – and boy has that been a challenge this week!

Scorpio rises slowly from his seated ‘throne’ and begins to walk carefully around his collection of foreign objects, stopping now and then to gently caress a spool of barbed wire, or a baseball bat.

Chris, you and I have already met several times previously in the CWF. (Scorpio chuckles to himself) Hmmm… you could say that our paths have ‘crossed’ (Scorpio makes an X with his arms once again, blatantly and deliberately laboring his point) quite a few times... quite a coincidence, especially considering my relatively short time here. However, already I have begun to notice a marked difference between where we both have been, and where we are heading. You see, just like that letter X that you seem to adore so much, one of our paths (Scorpio winks at the camera and jabs his thumb into his own chest, nodding) is heading way up. And the other, well… (Scorpio sighs and motions downwards with his arm) the other path is heading nowhere but down.

Now Chris, both of our lives up to this point have not been without opportunities. Indeed, we have a history of challenging for the same titles and opportunities each and every time our paths seem to cross. But you need to understand, Chris, that that is where the similarity ends. You see, with every opportunity you have been given, you’ve simply... thrown it away (Scorpio flings the baseball bat that he had been cradling far across the room; both the camera and Scorpio watches its journey, as it clangs loudly against one of the huge industrial boilers, and falls sadly to the floor. Scorpio turns back to the camera, apparently quite annoyed.) You’ve wasted perfectly good opportunities that could’ve made you a somebody. And that makes me angry Chris! Your path could’ve been oh so different, had you just grasped one of those golden opportunities and enjoyed the success that comes with it. And just think, Chris - you could've actually been somebody...

But let’s not make this all about you, eh Chris? Because many many years ago, the same thing could've been said about yours truly (Scorpio sits casually on the concrete floor, leaning back on the wooden table behind him) But now? Well, in the last few weeks and months, I feel different. I feel alive. And I feel that I have finally broke that glass ceiling that has been keeping me down for so long. I am taking the opportunities that are being given to be Chris, and I am using them to fulfill my potential. And this week... will be no different.

Scorpio rises once more and once again begins to pace around the weapons, looking for one object in particular. After a short time, he finally dives down amongst the mess and withdraws a long, wooden cane – Xtreme’s fabled Kendo Stick. Scorpio looks utterly at peace as he holds the weapon up to the light, caressing it with an all new kind of reverence, eyes closed.

Scorpio, eyes still closed: Now Chris, I’m not doubting your ability or your experience. You’re a CWF original, you’ve seen and done it all, and you’re no mug in the ring. But it’s not enough Chris... it's not enough to be able to SMASH (Scorpio suddenly brings the kendo stick down onto the floor, and a loud CRACK echoes throughout the empty room) and CRUSH (Scorpio brings the kendo stick down again, harder this time, onto the wooden table, which dents upon impact) and BATTER (Scorpio brings the weapon down for a third time, smacking it hard against one of the huge boilers, with the impact breaking the kendo stick in two) your opponents senseless. Because there’s more. You need to… feel it.

Scorpio turns back to the camera, a slightly deranged look in his dark eyes, small beads of sweat trickling down his rugged features, which show the strain of his latest outburst.

Scorpio: And I think that’s your problem, oh Almighty Xtreme One! You don’t understand the prestige and the honour that such a tournament can bring. That title – the C W F WORLD TITLE – it has history. You look back and past holders of that title, and you bring up names like Chaolin Sahn, Victor Quinn, and Cain. Legends, Chris. These men made names of themselves, these men made something out of themselves, by competing for and winning this illustrious title. They had it all – they had the desire, the guts and the in-ring ability to step up to the plate and say “I want to be the best!”

Scorpio has walked round to the other side of the boiler, where the baseball bat had previously disappeared; the camera, however, has stayed put, with the cameraman perhaps fearing for his safety with Scorpio in the mood that he is currently in. The effect, however, is somewhat scary, with Scorpio’s low, gravelly voice the only thing that can be seen or heard, his thoughts echoing loudly and ominously off the dark walls of the “Lair”.

Scorpio: And like I said before – I’m not doubting you Chris! To do so could be a very dangerous thing to do, as I’m sure people have already found out to their cost. It’s clear to me, both from watching you work and facing you in the squared circle that you clearly exhibit the guts, the desire and the determination to get the job done. But, what I have noticed of you is that your in-ring wrestling abilities are not quite up to scratch. So you can huff and you can puff, but without the core skills that we wrestlers rely on – because that’s what we are Chris, remember that, we are wrestling out there every single night, not fighting or brawling - WRESTLING. Without those skills, what chance have you got?

Scorpio appears slowly from the other side of the boiler, and stares directly into the lens of the camera, with a typically determined look coming over his grizzled features.

Scorpio: So next Tuesday, I vow to give you a wrestling lesson, young Chris, exhibiting moves and skills that the very foundation of this championship, company and industry have been built upon, for longer than any of us can ever remember. It may be something that a crazy, hardcore, kendo-stick-swinging bastard like yourself cannot understand, but I promise you, you will find out to your cost just what it means to wrestle for a shot at the CWF World Champioship.

The scene softly fades to black, with Scorpio looking satisfied and quietly confident, still surrounded by the organized chaos of The Scorpion’s Lair.
