The Hammer
|
It had been a quiet couple of weeks for Dan Highlander. He hadn’t been in any matches for a while – perhaps Rish was simply disappointed with him having lost the Paramount Championship. He was pretty disappointed with himself, for that matter. Not that it had really been his fault: he had pretty much had Mace beaten when King Nothing – he was certain it was King Nothing, had to be – had attacked him from behind in the dark. A voice on the PA had claimed that they had hit him with a piledriver – obviously it had been a bit hard to tell in the dark, but it had felt like one from what he remembered. And yet… something didn’t fit. King Nothing had seemed adamant that he was not the mysterious assailant, and to lie for this long was not his style. Usually if King Nothing wanted something, he simply took it. This was no longer about the Paramount Championship – Highlander had lost it, and Nothing had his own title anyway. For the first time, the thought started to run through Highlander’s mind that perhaps it wasn’t King Nothing who had attacked him, who had sent all those messages. I mean, yeah, they hit me with a piledriver, but he doesn’t exactly have a patent on it… who knows, maybe it was Street Shark. That’s about the most logical solution – take me out early so he doesn’t have to fight the biggest threat to his chance of winning – and I mean, it COULD have been a powerbomb. It was dark and I got a pretty nasty bang on the head from it. Highlander resolved that he was going to figure this out – but in perhaps a more diplomatic way than simply kicking down Nothing’s door and yelling at him. Maybe the King had seen the error of his ways – and perhaps Highlander owed him an apology. Highlander picked up his phone. Sure enough, he hadn’t deleted the entry “King Nothing” – he made to call the number when abruptly his phone rang. Private number. ‘Yeah?’ ‘You know…' came the same voice as before, sending a chill down Highlander's spine, 'I remember when I first saw Caledonia. My God, she’s beautiful. Gorgeous, smart, and with a metric ton of sex appeal to boot. She’s a damn near perfect woman, Hammer. What’s she doing with a scumbag like you?’ ‘Who are you?’ Highlander demanded. ‘Hmm… patience, Hammer. You’ll know in time – but first… mmm, first, I’m going to find her. Do you know what a man is capable of when he suspends all morals and honour? Of course you do – you’ve done it more than once yourself, haven’t you, Hammer? You make me sick.’ ‘I make YOU sick? Who the fuck do you think you are?’ Highlander felt the hairs on the back of his neck rising. ‘And what the fuck are you talking about, I would NEVER – ’ ‘Save it, Hammer. You see, the funny thing about morals… they do different things for different people. See, you… of course you’d never take a woman against her will, it’s like it’s built into your genes. But screw someone over to get to the top? Oh, no problem.’ For the first time, the other voice began to rise in a kind of manic frenzy. ‘You’ve been doing just fucking fine since you beat me, haven’t you, Dan? You’re the next big thing. Never looking back for your old tag team partner.’ It IS King Nothing! ‘Listen to me, you son of a bitch. I know it’s you, Powers. If you so much as lay a finger on Caledonia, I swear to God I will rip that gottverdammt plate out of your head with my bare hands! I will – ’ There was manic laughter on the other end of the line interrupting him. ‘You have nothing to threaten me with. And you can do nothing to stop me. I’m going to find your fiancé now, Hammer.’ The call terminated as abruptly as it had begun. Highlander was breathing heavily, and immediately called Caledonia. ‘Hello?’ ‘Cali, it’s Dan. Where are you?’ ‘I’m… about to leave Mark’s place. What’s wrong?’ ‘It’s King Nothing. I know it is.’ ‘Calm down, Dan, you don’t know – ’ ‘I don’t care! Even if it isn’t, whoever it was just made a threat against you.’ There was silence down the line. ‘Are you sure?’ ‘He was pretty fucking clear. Is Mark still there?’ ‘Yeah, he’s – he’s just coming out now.’ ‘Stay with him. I don’t want you leaving Mark Carlton’s company. Not until I can figure this out, and stop King Nothing.’ Caledonia was silent. There were a few moments before she spoke. ‘Dan… this is getting bigger than either of us.’ ‘I can’t go to the police. I already did, and they say there’s not enough evidence. And with the amount we move around they can’t offer protection. If you stay with Mark, Nothing will have to get through him, King and Mace before he gets to you.’ ‘That’s reassuring.’ ‘It should be. I may not like Jarvis, but he’s a damn good fighter, and he wouldn’t let someone simply attack a woman while he stood idly by. And although I can’t stand Mark, I know he’d die rather than let anyone hurt you. You’ll be safe.’ ‘What about you?’ ‘I’m going to make a phone call, and then I’m going to Denver.’ ‘Alright. I love you.’ ‘I love you too.’ Highlander hung up the phone, and exhaled sharply. He was still quaking with anger, but was rational enough to tell himself not to do anything rash. It didn’t help matters that he was angry enough to ignore himself. He pulled out his phone once more and made a call. ‘This is Rish.’ ‘Rish. This is Highlander. And I am about to make a demand.’ Down the line, Rish laughed. ‘Hang on, Dan. You don’t just call me and – ’ Highlander ignored him, cutting across the CWF President. ‘You will give me a match with King Nothing at Modern Warfare. You will make it No Holds Barred. And you will announce it tonight.’ Rish’s voice in response was angry, but more cold than fury. ‘You know, Highlander, it might not be for the belt, he might lose it tonight.’ ‘I don’t care. Make it happen.’ ‘And he may make it to the finals of Modern Warfare.’ ‘I don’t care. Make it happen.’ Rish chuckled mirthlessly. ‘I admire your determination. Now where does this new desire to fight King Nothing come from?’ ‘That’s my business. Just make the damn fight happen.’ Rish sighed. ‘You’re going to have to hope that he loses to Cain, or somewhere down the track. Because I can’t make it happen unless he’s beaten in the tournament.’ Highlander said nothing, breathing heavily. Rish continued. ‘Of course, this would have to be a quid pro quo arrangement. And I think you know what – ’ ‘Oh, don’t let’s go through this bullshit again. Just tell me what you fucking want.’ ‘Language, Highlander. As for what I want… well, to be honest, I’m still waiting on something. So why don’t you fly out to Denver and meet me. I’ll have an answer for you then.’ Grunting, Highlander hung up the phone. As he did, he saw that he had received a text message at some point. He opened it. “THE CROSS IS BURNING. NOTHING CAN STOP ME.’ |
