Blood Is Thicker Than Water; Entourage vs Xtreme and Anderson

Mark Carlton

Mark Carlton groggily stirred at 11 in the morning on a Saturday. He had been out drinking the previous night, and had been utterly unsuccessful in picking up – but perhaps that was because he hadn’t really tried. He had been lucky enough to engage someone in a conversation about the merits of William Butler Yeats, and, incredibly, had forgotten about sex for an hour or so. That hour, however, had been more than enough to get pleasantly drunk, and he had staggered home in a daze, realising that his abilities to perform normal, let alone sexy conversation had left him somewhere around The Second Coming.

Miraculously, though, it seemed that he had not only made it to his bed but had even managed to change in his pyjamas. So when he heard a ring at the door, he was very proud to be able to go and answer it. Sure enough, it was Steve. Carlton grinned broadly.

‘Hello Steve, how are – ’ He got about halfway through his sentence before feeling nauseous. He ran back to his ensuite and promptly threw up. Steve followed, shaking his head.

‘Bit too much last night, Mark?’

Carlton groaned as he removed his head from the toilet bowl, cleaning off his face and rinsing out his mouth.

‘Actually, not as bad as normal.’

‘So… a bit too much. Perhaps you should consider AA?’

‘I assure you, I’m quite alright. I can cut down any time I want to.’

Steve made to speak, before simply shaking his head. ‘Your match this week – ’

‘I checked my iPhone last night. I’ve got Captain Hollywood against Christopher Extreme and Tyler Anderson.’

‘Billy Anderson.’

‘There’s a Billy Anderson?’

Steve rolled his eyes. ‘One of these days, you’re actually going to read those papers I gave you.’

‘Sure I am. And Colton Mace is going to be in a good movie.’

Steve laughed. ‘Come on, mate, I kind of liked Ninja Wizards. The bears were the finishing touch.’

‘They shot lasers out of their eyes.’

‘Well, exactly.’

Carlton couldn’t think of anything more to say (at least, nothing that wasn’t moronic), so he questioned Steve about the match.

‘Now, I noticed something at the top – this is for the tag titles?’

‘No, mate, it’s a No.1 Contender Match. If you win, you fight Anubis and Scorpion for the titles.’

At this, Carlton suddenly looked more focused. ‘Anubis and Scorpion?’

‘They are the tag champs.’

‘But this is fantastic!’

Steve looked surprised. ‘Don’t tell me you actually care about a match that in no way involves a female?’

‘But this is far more important than sex, my friend!’

Steve literally fell off his chair. Cracking up laughing, he responded ‘What?! Say that again for the record.’

‘This is more important than sex.’

‘Well, maybe it is possible that you could read those papers. I have to know, mate – why? Why this in particular? Is it because it’s for the belts?’

‘You think so one-dimensionally, my friend. This is about more than simply the accumulation of gold.’

‘Bloody hell, just when I thought I had you worked out…’

‘Well, as thick as you are, pay attention: my words are a matter of pride.’

Carlton mistook Steve’s attempts to conceal his laughter for a look of vacancy and continued. ‘Anubis and Scorpion defeated my cousin. All those weeks ago, they beat Caledonia on their path to the championship. And given Highlander’s inability to secure a match with them, it falls upon me to avenge the dignity of our bloodline!’

‘Weren’t you disowned?’

Carlton scowled at Steve. ‘I am still of the same bloodline as Caledonia. It is my duty to avenge her defeat and scorn at the hands of Scarab and Scorpion. The self-proclaimed Demons will taste the full fury of the Carlton bloodline. As will these damned fools who look to stand in my way. Give me those papers.’

Steve’s jaw dropped. ‘Are you serious?’

Carlton, puffing himself up and looking tremendously dignified, even in his pyjamas, grabbed the information files on Xtreme and Anderson. ‘Xtreme and Anderson are, once again, obstacles in my way. I have no objection to going over either one of them. The Demons are all that are in my sight. To defeat them means that I would avenge the honour of our bloodline, and maybe that will – ’

Steve waited for a second. ‘What?’

‘It is unimportant. What matters in the present is the best method of defeating Xtreme and Anderson, followed by defeating Scorpion and Scarab to claim their prize. Steve, I’m going to need a full briefing on both Anderson and Xtreme by Monday, as well as more extensive information on the Demons. I need to know every conceivable weak point, everywhere that anyone’s ever targeted on either of them. And we need a contingency plan in case of Cyndicate interference. Think you can handle that?’

Steve grinned broadly. ‘Mate, I would love to try. Now that’s what I’m talking about!’

‘And in the meantime, I’ll be in the gym.’

‘Actually, you won’t be – you have an appointment with the Entourage.’

‘Excellent.’

‘Mark, can I make a suggestion?’

‘Of course.’

‘Don’t talk too much about Anubis and Scorpion if you and Colton record a joint promo. Remember to keep your focus on this week, where it belongs.’

‘Steve, my focus has never been more absolute.’

‘Even more than when you were in a match with Omega?’

‘Even more than that.’

Steve whistled. ‘And here was me thinking that this was about you avenging Omega’s honour.’

‘Well… I can’t deny that that’s something of a factor. But I am not in this match for love, nor even for gold. No, Steve, I am in this match for blood.’

Steve nodded brusquely, and, leaving the files on Carlton’s dressing table, left.

Will this battle, to avenge the honour of my family, be enough to avenge my honour?
