(I couldnt be bothered with the whole Psych File disguise anymore so I'm just gonna post it under my own name...)

November 29th 2002

It had been just over two weeks since I’d met Miss Ryan, I had been informed she was in a juvenile facility- serving a mere three weeks for breaking the nose of a class mate, how they justified the sentence was beyond me but it was never my place to argue with the system seeing as I was one of their pawns.

In those two weeks I hadn’t seen her, I’d been busy- not only with other subjects but digging- if you will more into her personal life, wondering what exactly it was that made her tick... Cliché I know.
I’d visited her listed place of residence, met by her mother- if she could be called that, her father wasn’t around at that time apparently, he was doing time for petty theft... Like father like daughter? Her mother didn’t seem to understand quite why I was there, whether it was just a lack of caring or whether it was because I’d interrupted something- judging by the look in her eyes it appeared to be a bit of both, and I didn’t need to be a doctor to say that she’d very recently taken in illegal substances.
Despite the age difference, Amber closely resembled her mother- who I was informed was named Melissa- it was in fact unnerving how similar they looked, and more so to know that Amber could have been on a fast track to this future, a future I certainly wouldn’t envy.

Amber seemed rather comfortable in my presence once she’d overcome the initial shock of me being here, exuding attitude she sat across from me- a cocky little smirk on her face, perhaps she believed she had already figured me out, I doubted it but with these kids you just never knew.
We exchanged pleasantries- as well as you can when your partner in conversation is 14, before getting down to business- I asked her about her goings on since our last encounter, she shrugged- the universal teenage reply before yawning at me, whether it was forced or not, I wasn’t sure but I could tell she was trying to frustrate me, trying to test the limits.

I tried to maintain my temper; I wasn’t going to show weakness this early- and proceeded to make another attempt at conversation...

Me: So Amber, you have- what a week till release? Gotta be excited...

Amber: Don’t call me by that name

Me: Amber?

Amber: Na- Coconut McGillacutty you douche bag...

I’d obviously struck a nerve without meaning to, a nerve I’d have to exploit- I assumed it’d have t be a family related thing, seeing as her explosive reaction to the use of her name, and my mention of family mere weeks before...

Me: So what shall I call you then?

Amber: A.J or Angel will do...

Me: Angel?

Amber: That’s what I said- unless of course you only speak idiot in which case I can’t translate

Ouch. She was spitting barbs left, right and centre- obviously her defence mechanism.
As they always say- the best defence is a good offense, I’m pretty sure that’s how it goes anyway- I was never good with sayings, they didn’t seem practical a lot of the time so I didn’t bother.

Me: So why "Angel"?

This was the first time she’d shown emotion towards me, that wasn’t confusion or disdain- it was an excitement, you know- like the excitement a kid gets when they’re eager to tell you about something.

She proceeded to tell me how it was a name given to her by some of the other girls in the juvi centre, mainly cause she looked so small and innocent, but when it came down to it she’d be right up there ripping people to shreds.
It wasn’t the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.
I hated to compare her to an animal but it was hard not to make the comparison when speaking of someone in the prison system.
We fell into an awkward silence, staring across the table that separated us- she played with her hair idly, humming an unknown tune.
I just sat there trying to look for some clues as to figuring her out.

For some reason I felt compelled to ask if she’d come to my office for another appointment, I wanted to help her, I wanted to understand what exactly she was about- I was fully prepared to be shot down in flames.
She said she would.
She obviously saw something in me, more than me being just another person trying to change her, it gave me a small amount of hope for the future, for her future- i gave her my card, along with an appointment date and then- all I had to do was wait.
