Finding Dolores

After meeting with my client and his ladyfriend I decided to take some time to look into the Spiritual Science Institute. The way I see it, if you're searching for a lost girl in a strange city, first you've gotta understand the city. What I needed was a guide.

I found one in the form of a lady named Stacey Christman. Stacey ran this group, Saved Souls International - same initials as the Spiritual Science Institute, I guess it was meant to be ironic or something - that helped people who'd been hurt by the SSI. She'd used to be a member back in the day, her and her husband, the two of them had got pretty high up before quitting. She'd worked for Department 20, which to hear her tell it was like a mix of the KGB, the Inquisition and a legal team that sue a dog for the fur off its back.

Their role was to deal with anything that could harm the Institute, from within or without. She'd worked with them for years, when one day - so she said anyway - she just decided this wasn't right and walked away. The hubby followed a few months later and the two of them set up their group to try and help people who were still inside, try and advise families, that sort of deal. They'd been through hell because of it, investigations, smear campaigns, you name but, but she didn't seem like the type to back down.

I met up with her in the bar, the same back I met my client in - I swear I'm the only thing keeping that dump going - to try and get some info on what could have happened to Dolores, why she would have disappeared, whether she could be tracked down. Stacey gave me this huge folder of info on the SSI right from the off, teachings, policy documents, newspaper clippings, the lot. She drew my attention to one policy page in particular.

Our aim is religion
Our method is science

Notes From the Mountaintop: Antagonists
14 February 1977.

IT has come to my attention that policy and teaching regarding Antagonistic persons has not been fully codified or distributed, resulting in a lack of understanding on how to identify such persons and what steps are necessary in dealing with them. This policy is not the product of abstract speculations, nor is it created to vindicate legalistic theories; rather it is created in order to codify what has until now been standard, if unwritten, practice.

The first question we must ask, then, is seemingly simple: what is an Antagonist, how may they be identified?

An Antagonist is one who seeks to disrupt and inhibit the Spiritual and Scienctific progress of others. They are under-developed in both qualities and, jealous of those more advanced than they, seek to hold others down. These people are journalists, lawyers and psychiatrists, so-called "anti-cult" activists (in actuality enemies of religious freedom of all kinds), judges, preachers and politicians of all major parties. They are drawn to professions in which they may rule over others, for this gives them the power they seek to hold others back.

An Antagonist, then, is one who has deliberately chosen to make themselves an enemy of humanity. It is only through the application of Spiritual Science that such people can be identified and either helped or, at a last resort, neutralised. As enemies of society they are owned none of society's protection. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed at any time for any reason.

From time to time a circumstance may arise in which an Antagonist is linked on a personal level to a man or woman seeking truth within the bounds of Spiritual Science. In such a circumstance there are two options available. The first, and preferred, method is to show the Antagonist the error of his ways and correct his condition. The second, if the Antagonist refuses to cease his harmful behaviour and attacks on Spiritual Science, is to Dissociate from him; that is, to cut off contact immediately and completely, lest the seeker be held back in their path to godhood.

It was that last bit that grabbed my attention. Suddenly lots of stuff started to make sense, Stacey was talking but I didn't really listen. I figure, the guy joined the same time she did but left, he must have had his reasons - and from what I know of him he ain't the kind who keep his mouth shut on it. He criticised the group, they told her to cut off contact, and that was that. Would even explain the move to Germany, too - there was something in the file about relocating people so they wouldn't be tempted to be "antagonised" again.

Stacey had asked me to bring along some details from the case, who Dolores was, how old she would be now, to see if she could get some information. Stacey still had a few friends in Department 20, people who stayed inside the cult for the sake of their families but did everything they could to fuck it up from within. Takes a lot of courage, I'll give them that. She said she'd get back to me as soon as she heard anything.

She asked me a bit about Dolores, about why I was trying to find her. I told her what I could without exposing my client too much. The two of them, him and Dolores, had been close as any two people could be back in the day. Then they both joined the SSI, he left, she stayed in, then one day she upped and left without a word.

Stacey didn't seem surprised at this, just a bit sad, the kind of sadness which comes with familiarity. A touch of regret as well. I figure she used to work for Department 20, she probably played her part in forcing these Dissociations back in the day. Maybe doing the work she did was her way of redeeming herself to whatever god she thought existed. Or maybe she was just guilty or bitter. Damned if I know.

What I do know is Stacey just made Dolores a fuck of a lot more real to me. And I plan to do everything I can to find her.
