We are in a cell - tiny, big enough to contain a slim mattress and little else. The walls are a brilliant white, glaring, almost painful to look at, the room lit by a single lightbulb high above. A bowl sits to one side, half full with a simple mix of rice and beans, cold and clearly untouched.

Amber Jaye Ryan lays on the mattress, her eyes fixed on the ceiling, unblinking. Her breathing is measured and steady, her body still.

“Good evening.”

She jumps, her eyes flicking to the door; it remains closed. Amber pulls herself upright, glances around the cell; her eyes settle in a corner high up in the ceiling. Somehow, impossibly, a familiar figure is seated there. Clad all in black, a single red omega symbol over his left breast, long black hair flowing over his shoulders.

It is Elijah, but not Elijah as he is. Elijah as he was, all those years ago when they first met in 2009. He seems out of place, glowing slightly, not fully part of the world.

Amber blinks, turns away, back. Still he is there.

Elijah: Please forgive the intrusion.

Amber: How are you here?

Elijah: I am not. My body is in the Academy. My beloved is in the forest outside, laying traps and making plans. Eris works on their drones. In the gym, people are training, pushing their bodies and readying themselves to fight. I am in the sanctuary. My spirit is here.

Amber: Maybe. Or maybe you're just a hallucination.

Elijah: Perhaps. Incarceration does strange things to the mind. Believe me, I know. I have lived what you now live, persevered as you do now. The very cell in which you now lay was once my own.

Amber: Prove it.

Elijah: Look under the mattress.

She rolls off the mattress, absent-mindedly eating a spoonful of the rice and beans. She pulls up the end of the mattress, spots a few words scratched into the ground. Despite herself, a tiny smile creeps across her face as she reads.

BE SEEING YOU

As suddenly as the smile crosses her face, it vanishes, replaced by doubt.

Amber: How do I know you're not…

Elijah: A trick by the Institute to get you to talk?

Amber: Yes.

Elijah: You do not.

A moment's silence.

Elijah: Tell me. What has happened since your incarceration?

Amber: Elisha. Sometimes in person, sometimes him and Sunset sending their minions to go their bidding. They come to me at night - at least, I think it's night. Night and day mean nothing here.

The lights are never off. I can barely sleep. Sometimes they make me fight. Sometimes they starve me. Sometimes they feed me anything I want. Sometimes it's a thousand questions a minute, sometimes absolute silence for weeks. I don't even know how long I've been here.

Elijah: And yet you remain strong. You remain you.

Amber: I do?

Elijah: Yes. You are one of the strongest people I have ever known. I survived this and so shall you.

Amber: Cain was here.

Elijah pauses a moment.

Elijah: What did he -

Amber: He hurt me. Not physically - he shied away from that. But he watched. The bastard stood and watched and listened as these scumfucks tormented me.

Elijah: He is an addict. The Institute has ways of bending people to their Will. Taking any weakness and forging it into a weapon.

Amber: Maybe. Doesn't matter.

Elijah: Perhaps. What matters is that you are here. Despite everything, their attempts to bend you and break you and make you submit. You are still Amber Jaye Ryan. And you are unbreakable. Remember that. Hold onto it when they come for you. It may be your salvation.

Abruptly, Elijah glances upward, his expression turning to one of concern.

Amber: What is it?

Elijah: I must depart. There are drills to be carried out, contingencies to be laid. Preparations are afoot.

Amber: For what?

Elijah: War, of course.

He bows his head.

Elijah: Be seeing you.
So you must carry this light into the darkness
You shall be a star unto the night
You will find hope alive among the hopeless
That is your purpose to this life...
