Type(s): Normal Base Stats: 90 HP / 120 Atk / 75 Def / 45 Spd / 60 SAtk / 60 SDef - Total 405 Trait(s): Intimidate - Lowers the foe's Attack 1 stage. Decreases wild encounter rate. Quick Feet - Increases Speed by 50% when statused. Weakness(es) x4: N/A Weakness(es) x2: Fighting. Resists x4: N/A Resists x2: N/A Immune: Ghost. Tier: UU Granbull (M) @ Choice Band Ability: Intimidate EVs: 56 HP / 176 Atk / 180 Spd / 96 SDef Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk) - Body Slam / Return - Close Combat - Crunch - Giga Impact / Earthquake / Ice Punch This set is mighty in UU play. It's massive Base 120 Atk really shines bright with a Choice Band. 120 is high anyway, even for OU, but in UU it's monstrous. Body Slam is listed as an option, even on the Choice Band version, as UU Play is very status heavy, and no team will disapprove of an extra bit of paralysis support. Return if you prefer packing an extra punch and aren't bothered by the extra paralysis at all, or if you feel it isn't worth it on Granbull. Close Combat was a welcomed addition to Granbull's movepool in the new generation, as it hits almost everything Earthquake does in UU (something Granbull was previously lumbered with regardless), and more. It has a stronger base power as well, so can be utilized more on this Choice Band set. I suppose Earthquake could be mentioned as an option over it as well, but Close Combat offers slightly more coverage. Crunch for those pesky Ghosts, like Rotom and Froslass, and it also lands massive hits on Hypno, and Grumpig, as well as being able to hit Solrock and Lunatone for Super Effective damage which Granbull can't otherwise deal with. The 4th slot really is more of a filler: Giga Impact works well if you're on your last legs and want to deal one last powerpunch to almost certainly knock something out. Earthquake is there if you really want to hit Electric and Poison Types for Super Effective damage, which isn't really needed, but could be of some use if Muk has a couple of Curses under it's belt. And Ice Punch will OHKO Altaria, and Gligar (once it is finally re-released into the UU mainstream), and is only listed as an option. EVs are there to make the most of it's attack without overdoing it too much, but still having a lot of power. Speed EVs ensure it outruns all Hypno, that don't invest in Spd, which will be all/most of them, so you can get in your Crunch before it has time to set up a Reflect. And the extra HP/SDef is there to balance out it's SDef which also means it will be able to take a Choice Specs Bug Buzz from any Venomoth and KO it back with a Normal move. The extra HP also lets it make more use of Intimidate and come in on weaker Physical attacks without fear of suffering too much damage. Granbull (M) @ Leftovers Ability: Intimidate EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 Spd Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk) - Body Slam - Heal Bell - Toxic - Taunt / Counter / Roar I like this. It makes use of Granbull's rather limited, yet unique range of support moves. It has some really cool options, like those on display in this set. Body Slam there for general usage, and to make some fun with the Paralysis rate. Nothing else to say, as nothing else is needed. Heal Bell is quite nice, as UU is very status heavy, but with only a select number of Pokémon getting Aromatherapy/Heal Bell - and Granbull just so happens to be one of them! Very useful on stall based teams against other stall based teams, or against teams that are generally status based (aka, most). Toxic is there to hit Solrock, Lunatone, Hypno, Grumpig, Golem, Gastrodon, and some other annoying little fricks that will annoy you when they know you're slightly lacking in power due to no Choice Band. Thunder Wave can go over the top of it, and you can swap Body Slam for Return, but I like the benefit of having the option of both Paralysis and Toxic on one set, as well as Body Slam being able to hit Ground types for Paralysis. Taunt will be the move I suggest the strongest on the 4th slot, as it will destroy some things completely. Hypno will not be able to do beans against you after it, because you'll be blocking it's means of doing almost anything against you or in general, and the speed EVs supplied here mean you'll be able to outspeed Vileplume, and stop it putting you to sleep, recovering, or Leech Seeding you - who also tied with Aggron, and this will mean you'll be able to Taunt Aggron out of a Substitute or thunder Wave. Counter is there as a cool option to work off this sets more ample defence stat. It can survive a plethora of attacks, especially after Intimidate has inflicted the Pokémon you're contemplating countering. With Wish support, this works a lot better (obv). And the final option is Roar. A decent move in UU, as it is quite hard to come by, and is mostly overlooked when making teams, but then you're vulnerable to certain stat-upping Pokémon. This can also help on a Stall based team to induce as much secondary damage as possible by forcing something out that is expecting a Choice Banded Normal attack - like Golem or Aggron. It will also block Aggron's attempts to set up a Substitute. Granbull (M) @ Leftovers Ability: Intimidate EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 SDef Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk) - Body Slam / Double-Edge - Bulk Up - Rest - Sleep Talk This is a nice concept. Bulk Up, then Rest, then continue to Bulk Up/Attack in your sleep. Body Slam for Paralysis support, Double-Edge for a lot more power. EVs here are a little shaky, admittedly, though the ones listed will boost Granbull's frankly shit SDef up to a level that is acceptable, and it's defence will be aided by Intimidate and Bulk Up respectively. Quick Feet could be a fun option here, though it only elevates you to 189 Spd. Even still, this could be enough to catch another Granbull who is planning to Close Combat you off guard, or could mean the difference to surviving and dieing to another physical attack, as if you pick Bulk Up in your speed boosted sleep, you'll gain a faster +1 in defence! Granbull (M) @ Leftovers / Life Orb Ability: Intimidate EVs: 192 HP / 136 Atk / 180 Spd Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk) - Bulk Up - Close Combat - Body Slam / Return - Crunch A more standard based Bulk Up set. Bulk Up a couple of times, and smack a couple of things. Life Orb as an option to deal more damage, but reduces your survivability. Same speed as the Choice Band version to outrun the same things. Not much else to say, pretty simple, or previously explained. You can, however, make use of Quick Feet here, and equip a Toxic/Flame Orb (depending on how long you want the purple dog to last) and try it that way: Granbull (M) @ Toxic Orb / Flame Orb Ability: Quick Feet EVs: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 244 Spd Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk) More attack as it may not get a chance to use Bulk Up, and max speed ensures you hit 280 after the speed boost, outrunning all neutral natured Base 90's. It's something worth mentioning I guess. Sort of a Ursuring of UU, that is slower and doesn't have access to Swords Dance... Only difference from the set listed above is that Facade is an option over Body Slam/Return. Other Options Choice Scarf version of the Banded one is available, but is inferior to other Scarf Pokémon in UU. A more focussed Counter set could be used for fun, but nothing worth mentioning outside of what I already did. Charm could be fun for forcing switches. Double-Edge on the Choice Band set to deal some serious damage. For use in OU, lol, Fire Punch is advised, as it will be able to put a little dent in Skarmory, and will seriously hurt Scizor and Forretress. Bronzong wont like it either. A Sub Punching set could be used, but that is a job best left to Kangaskhan. Headbutt could also be an option on the Quick Feet set to abuse the Flinch Hax. Payback deals more damage than Crunch if Granbull attacks second, but less consistent. Reflect could be put to use on the support set. Scary Face could be used on a set somewhere, I suppose... Thunder Wave + Smellingsalt on the support set could be used for lols. Opinion One of the hardest hitting monsters in UU, and one of the main reasons why every single team requires a Normal resist. Though it's access to Close Combat and Earthquake make swapping into it that much more difficult and risky. Ghosts aren't safe either, knowing it comes packing Crunch. A real favourite of mine, and has been for a fair few years now. Though shamefully just a UU version of Ursuring (more so now with the addition of Quick Feet and Close Combat). Really good solid rather versatile Upper UU Pokémon. Counters To find counters for something that has a base 120 Attack and can hit everything in the game for neutral damage, with 3 attacks alone, is difficult enough as it is in OU, but in UU, the difficulty of this task is multiplied. Sableye, with a good amount of defence, will be able to stop it almost completely, Knocking Off it's Choice Band while being immune to it's 2 most powerful attacks (Return/Body Slam and Close Combat). Choice Banded Earthquakes will deal 46.05% - 53.95% which after Leftovers isn't even a 2HKO, but not many sets will use Earthquake. Crunch from the same Granbull will deal 36.84% - 43.42% which is considerably less (and all sets will use this), but Sableye will have to be wary of Crunch's -Def. This means Sableye is probably Granbull's best and most solid counter in UU play. If your team doesn't have Sableye on it, which many wont, simple prediction should do the trick, and assuming you're not against a player known for their knowledge and skill in UU, you shouldn't suffer too much if you carry a simple Normal resist. Reflect is a good idea on every team because of Granbull and the threat is poses. Most Pokémon faster than it who can land a strong Fighting attack, or a strong Special attack on it will put it down swiftly as well. It will hate status, especially burns, which Sableye and Solrock also frequently carry these days. Choice Band Return will just fall short of 2HKOing standard (252 HP/216 Def Bold) Torkoal as well, who also learns Will-o-Wisp and who will Rest off the damage you do, so can be considered a solid-ish counter to Granbull if it isn't using Earthquake. |
