IV Breeding

IV breeding, besides the evident presence of egg moves, is one of the main reasons for breeding. This is a quick guide on how to do it. I might update later.

So this is how it works.

So you have two Pokemon in the daycare. You realise the egg is there now once the Pokemon do their job.

Now, when an egg is made, 3 random Ivs from the parents are passed down.

This means you could get 2 from Parent One + 1 from Parent Two or vice versa.

The rare possibility of getting four Ivs passed down has been noted though I am unsure if it is 100% confirmed.

Anyway, using this factor, we can manipulate the breeding process to our favour.

And don’t fucking forget a Magma Armour / Flame Body Pokemon.

Ditto - Thy God

Ditto is what many people, including myself, find to be the number one asset during IV breeding.

If you have Emerald, Ditto are very easy to catch, in the underground tunnel situated in the back of the Fossil Maniac’s house in Fallabor Town.

Now it’s pretty simple: catch the Ditto you see. Using Synchronize Abra can help if you are looking for a Ditto to hold everstone too, as everstone always effects the Ditto.

Eventually, you should start catching Ditto with a 31 IV(s). Keep doing this to get the one you want.

If you have no access to Emerald, this will be much more difficult. You can still use Synch Abra, but Ditto is a Pokeradar Pokemon, and a rare one at that. You’ll have a longer wait trying to get good ones.
They can be found on route 218 by the way, which is just east of Canalave City.

Natu can also be used: In the Safari Zone in R/S/E, they are found in the first area you come to. If you place certain Pokeblocks into the Pokeblock Feeder, it attracts Pokemon of certain natures.
However, despite certain natures being easier to find (since you have a 1/5 chance now), the Natu's are much harder to catch since you only have access to Safari Balls.

Ditto IVs (Emerald).

NOTE: If you are interested in IV breeding for hidden powers (expalined later in the guide), and you find Dittos with 30 (as well as 31) IV in satk/spd/sdef, you should keep it.[/b]

NOTE: Contrary to what was previously posted on the forum, if you breed a third generation Ditto holding everstone with a Pokemon caught in D/P, the everstone effect IS NOT cancelled.

It WILL, however, not work if you breed a Pokemon from a different language version, eg. Jap Ditto with Eng Magikarp.

Hatching Eggs

You can hatch eggs in one of two ways.

Mass Breeding:
This is simply getting as many eggs as you can fit into your party (5) and hatching them.

SR Breeding:
In both Emerald and D/P, the Ivs of an egg are only assigned when you RECEIVE THE EGG.
The trait, gender, and nature are determined BEFORE receiving it.
So, save before asking for the egg. Hatch it. If it has the trait, nature and gender you want but bad Ivs, just soft reset or switch the game on / off. It will always have those features, but you can keep trying for better Ivs.
If it doesn’t have what you want, you have to repeat the process.
This is handy with things like Magnet Pull Magnemite.

The Breeding.

Since the most (common) amount of Ivs that can be passed down is 3, you should aim to pass down 3 perfect Ivs to a Pokemon, in the stats where it most requires them.

Example 1

For this Example, we will use Infernape.
The Infernape will be used as a mix set, so you should try to get 31 in Atk / Spd / Satk.

You may choose to start with Special Attack. If you have a Ditto with the Nature you want for Infernape, leave it till last.

So, breed the Infernape / Monferno / Chimchar with a Ditto with Perfect Satk. And, using one of the hatching methods mentioned above, wait till you have a Chimchar with 31 Satk.

Now, breed it with another 31 stat Ditto. I’ll say Speed.

Once you have a 31/31 Spd/Satk Ditto, move onto Attack.
Now, as I mentioned earlier, the LAST ditto you use should have the nature you want for your Pokemon, so you can give it an Everstone. We’ll say for example that the Ditto is Naďve.

Now, eventually, you should get a Naďve Chimchar with 31 Atk / Spd / Satk.

A small thing to note is that perfect stats ARE NOT EVERYTHING. 30 is very respectable, as are 28 / 29.
If you find that you only get 27 in one of the stats you were breeding for but get like 25+ pr just very good in all the other viable stats, you should consider keeping the Pokemon.

For example, my Flygon only has 29 Atk and 30 Speed, but 30 Def, 30 Sdef and 27 HP, so I kept it.

Example 2 / Tip

Not so much an example but w/e.

If you are breeding for flawless HP / Def, always leave HP till last, and Def till second last.

Def has a slightly lower chance of getting passed down, so you don’t want to have to breed for it twice.

The same goes for HP except it has an even lower chance, so save it till last.

This game make breeding for walls take longer than usual.

Example 3 / Tip 2

If you’re breeding for an egg move, always breed it onto the non-Ditto Pokemon before iV breeding with ditto, and always make sure the hatchling from breeding with Ditto is Male.

Finding The IVs

How to find IVs - The level 5!
The previous egg hatch level. At level 5, every stat whose base stat ends with 5 (Not multiple of 5, it must end with the number five, like 45, 85, 65, etc) will have an exclusive number for IVs 30 and 31. You can do that in SPP's IV calculator, first you calculate a Base stat that ends with 5 with IV 31 and then with IV 29, you'll notice a one point stat change. and that's enough to know if your Pokémon has flawless stat (Actually a chance to have flawless stat, since it can be 30).

How to find IVs - The level 10!
Bothered with the "Base stat ending with 5" thing? Well, your problems are over! Because at level 10 IVs 30 and 31 ALWAYS have a exclusive number don't matter the base stat. You may think "So why you wrote previous rule if there's a global one 5 levels above?" well, it's all about saving time. That's alwats good. BTW, one point below in Lv 10 compared to the maxium stat it can get means IV 20~29.

How to find IVs - The level 1!
You can find if the IV is 30 or 31 at DP's hatching level! But unfortunately, few Pokémon are pleased by this. At level 1, IVs 30 and 31 will have an exclusive number for the base stats 35, 85 and 135. Time to be happy Tyrogue! I know Nosepass is the only Pokémon that can come out from the egg with a base stat 135.

If you have Emerald, the "IV Man", located just above the Pokemon Center in the Battle Tower, will help you pick out perfect stats.
I tend to find when I breed on Emerald that you start to notice what stats are high and not anyway, or at least what the highest number for a stat is.

Hidden Power

Hidden Power breeding is not as extremely difficult as everyone makes out, but will more than likely take a good bit of time.

For a more in-depth explanation, I highly recommend this@

http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20649

Which is Smogon’s breeding guide part IV: Hidden Power.

Go there for the advanced calcs and probabilities as well: I just use the following methods.

Anyway.

When you breed for Hidden Power, always breed for Satk / Sdef / Spd. Well, you can do it otherwise, but these three are easiet.

This is because if satk / spd / sdef are ODD numbers after being divided by 2, you will always have a Hidden Power with AT LEAST 65 base power.

Sometimes however, the Hidden Power will require you to have 30 in satk/sdef/spd, not 31.

Smogon’s guide is really what you need to look at to determine what you need.

But, one more tip: If you want to determine your Hidden Power but aren’t sure because Ivs aren’t easy to tell until late-mid levels, battle a Kecleon and use Hidden Power, as it’ll change to that Hidden Power.
If you can’t find a Kecleon, just battle things and see what damage you to do them.

So that's why you sr =/

vgj anyway. I didn't have a clue how to do most of this stuff

EDIT: That sr trick would have helped while breeding for Gallade, I finally got a male Adamant and it had 0-5 Atk and HP IVs :(

Add this pl0x. It helps you find IVs for pokemon at low levels.

How to find IVs - The level 5!

How to find IVs - The level 10!

Use Rare Candies when leveling up the pokemon to find the IVs.

I'm going to edit that in, as well as stuff about Natu's and how 3rd gen dittos don't pass down natures.

To find ivs such as 30 for stats without brackets, just minus the difference between it and 31.
I'm going to update this with 0 for trick roomers, as well as extending about to the "IVs of babies" section.

Well I brought this up in IS, but I really don't think Garchomp is Uber with deoxys-e around, since the speed boost from dragon dance make users of that move more potent than Garchomp, who really plays more as a wallbreaker with a chance to sweep. Bot

Yes, I also noticed this.

It should be Beneficial on the 3rd set.

Edited 4J's post (changed HINDERING to BENEFICIAL.)

I made a chart like that for myself when I started catching Ditto, I've pretty much got it memorized now.
