So this is my top 5 board games as of today, with a little basic description and a link to a site with some more details, and even a pic.... what more could you want! Oh and I've given you the German names of some of them, as all the ones i own are all in German, but a few of them have names that are the same in German and English :) 5 - Der Dieb von Bagdad: The Thief of Baghdad Posted Image Players: 2-4 Playing Time: ~ 45 mins This game requires you to get thieves into palace's while using your guards to stop others from doing the same, and even using guards to to help you smuggle in thieves. You draw coloured cards that relate to the palaces, and play the number of cards related to the number of guards to get in the palace, or combinations of different coloured palace cards to move guards. An incredibly simple game that is great fun to play! 4 - Carcassonne Posted Image Players: 2-5 Playing Time: ~ 45 mins So the basic principle with this game is to draw a tile and place it onto the board, matching one of the sides of the tiles to the same type on the board. You then claim towns, roads, monasteries and farms with wooden followers, with completed elements scoring points! A nice straightforward game (scoring takes a bit if getting used too), There are a good few expansions available for this, which makes for some variety 3 - Die Sternenfahrer von Catan: Starfarers of Catan Posted Image Players: 3-4 Playing Time: ~ 120 mins Now this is actually part of The Settlers of Catan Range but is a standalone game, i contemplated putting the original on this list, however this is more fun in my opinion, although if i get an expansion to Settlers that may change. Anyways this is more of a building game, you have to build ships and setup colonies on distant planets, you roll 2 dice and the numbers relate to planets which give you resources for trading and building, you then use your mother-ship to determine how far ships can move to get to other planets, and if any random encounters happen that must be dealt with. Its a complex game, but great once you get the hang of it. 2 - Dominion Posted Image Players: 2 - 4 Playing Time: ~ 30 mins Now this would have been number one if i wrote the list last week, as it is an amazing game. This is a Deck management game, but with a difference, on top of the money and victory cards used in the game, you get Kingdom cards, which give you various actions and bonuses. The base game has 25 different kingdom cards, but you only ever use 10 of them in a single game, so the combinations are incredible, and no 2 games are ever the same. When you spend money you still keep it in your deck, (goes to a discard pile, that then becomes your deck when your deck runs out) While you can have a set strategy if the cards are not going your way you have to adapt. The game basics are straightforward, but takes a long time to master! Add to the fact there are multiple expansions, the game possibilities are endless (i now own 75 kingdom cards, and as you only use 10 you can imagine that every game is different) Winner of 2009 Spiel des Jahres (Game of The Year), which is the biggest board game award in the world as far as i know! And number 1 is .... 1 - Kingdom Builder Posted Image Players: 2 - 4 Playing Time: ~45 mins Well this is the latest game i picked up while in Germany about 3 days ago, and have already played 3 games against my Bro!! This is actually designed by the same guy that made dominion (number 2 in this list :P) Again each game is different, as you have 8 game boards, and you use 4 random ones in a game. The object of the game is to build settlements, by drawing a card and building on that type of terrain, adjacent to an existing one if possible. There are 10 rules for scoring, but again you only use 3 of them in a game, which are drawn at the start so you know how to get points!! This makes all games different, and as many of the rules contradict each other you have to try and balance it out to get the most points. A superb game that again has expansions (i have yet to get any but am looking into it already) This was the Spiel des Jahres winner of 2012, and i am not surprised as it is brilliant! So that is my top 5, i will post other suggestions of good games later on, and any suggestions you guys have, then post them here!! |

Posted Image Hero Quest- This is sort of a Dungeons and Dragons feel, using miniatures, and a game board that you set up for each individual dungeon. Very interesting play. One person would be the DM, and there were four main character miniatures. A Barbarian, an Elf, a Dwarf, and a Wizard. If there were not enough players for each, they were divided among current players, or at times with me and my dad, I had to control all four. Tons of fun though. There are different cards that help the action and story to unfold as well. There are treasure cards, which the player will use an action on their turn to search, and draws a card. Could be good, could be bad. There are Wandering Monster cards, that a player gets to fight, when searching and pulling the wrong treasure card. There are also spell cards, for the Elf, and the Wizard. Air, Fire, Water, Earth. The Elf can only control one set of these however, the wizard gets the rest. The DM has Chaos cards that are essentially spells to use against the players. Two red die for movement along the board, and six white die with shields and skulls. You roll the white die in combat situations. Your player character card tells you how many, depending on the weapon you have. Shields are defensive points, and skulls are hits. One player rolls say 3 dice, and has 2 skulls and a shield. The monster rolls 2 dice and gets 2 shields. Player has scored 2 hits, the monster however was able to block them with the 2 shields. The whole thing is Line of Sight based, so that the dungeon is only revealed piece by piece as you progress through it. I had hours of great gameplay with this in my early teenage years. Easy introduction into the sort of realms you find D&D games taking place. |

Interesting, I have that game and I used to play it by myself as a kid (forever a lone). Though I never really read the "rules per say" I'll have to look into it more |

I used to play Carcasonne and Kingdom Builder all the time. In fact, Carcasonne is on Steam and XBL. |

In my case, since I have kids and we play board games during my free time, here are some of the new board games that we usually play: 1.) 7 Wonders 2.) Asara Family Game 3.) Forbidden Island The good thing about playing these board games is that me and my children are having fun while my children are exercising their brains. |

Forbidden Island is an interesting game. I played part of a game of it at work. Didn't get to finish though. It has an interesting take in that all the players are on the same team. |

You know I nearly bought 7 wonders while in Germany a few weeks ago, but ended up going for Kingdom Builder as I knew I could play the German version with little translation required! (my German is basic at best) Will have to have a skeet at it online (very few places over here sell board games other than the basic film based ones and monopoly style) |
