Laptop overheating?

Quick question about laptop hardware for those of you who might know. Whenever I play a game, doesn't matter how technically demanding it is, my laptop heats up like crazy. It's a brand new laptop that I got this year and I don't want to destroy it by playing games if that's what's happening?

Mine does that too. I just put it on a cooling rack used for baking and it hasn't collapsed on me yet.

Check the individual parts, see if overheating is a common problem, get a diagnostic tool. If the laptop was custom built, consult the custom builder, if it was off the shelf I'd imagine it should be fine.

I'm not sure, but I think newer components are built to take a lot more heat than older stuff. Also check that you're not blocking the cooling ports (fan outlets etc.)

Yeah what Verl said really. Laptops generally get too hot when placed on your lap, it doesn't do the laptop any damage, but can get unbearable on the legs. I use a bean bag serving tray type thing, As it has a flat top so the laptop sits raised and so the fans can work properly.

Using my friend laptop, I have experience with the insane amount of heat on my lap. So, I'm guessing that all laptops give off alot of heat.

As Verl said, getting a diagnostic tool would help. AIDA64 is a good program to use to measure your temperature.
You can download the free trail from here: http://www.aida64.com/downloads

I read that for laptops, the CPU can withstand 80 degrees constantly. However, it's advisable to keep the CPU under 70 degrees. To do this, your meant to keep it in a cool area, well ventilated, and away from dust and dirt. If your CPU is still really hot, then check your heat sink in the laptop and check that it's down properly and if there is any dust or dirt in there too.

That's all I have

Another good idea that I do to keep from it heating up too much, is a cooling fan that you plug in and put under your laptop. It's like putting on a rack like they said, except it's a fan so it keeps it cooler then just laying it on something not fabric like. That's what I have and it works great for me, you can get one for like $50 CAD, don't know what that would be in pounds, but it's pretty good considering you'll be able to use it for years, and you'll have it for laptop after laptop if you don't beat it up.

Alright thanks for the advice! I also just installed JKA to my laptop and it seems to be in a windowed mode, the sides are blackened out? I changed the resolution but no luck, any ideas?

Yes, you can expect your laptop to generate a lot more heat when you are playing a game as it uses more resources. I notice this on my laptop as well.
Best thing to do is use a USB laptop cooling pad. Also to make sure that you use a can of compressed air on the vents once every 6 months or so to keep the vents clear and free.
