Regardless of if you live in the US, or even if you do and aren't old enough to fully understand this, I feel that it's something we all need to pay attention to in the next few weeks. The SOPA bill, to put it in the most basic explanation that I can, would effectively shut down websites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, Photobucket, Imgur, Filefront, etc. It could even have an effect on these very forums. The SOPA bill makes it illegal to share ANY form of copyrighted content. So, basically, you find an internet meme that you think is funny, and you decide to share it to a friend, or on the forums, or on Facebook, and it happens to have a copyrighted image used in it (like something from a movie/tv show).. that image can be deleted, and any website hosting the image can be attacked by the FCC. MAJOR websites are threatening to shut down if this bill passes. Amazon, YouTube, Google, Yahoo, and Ebay just to name a few. If you are of legal voting age, I encourage ALL of you to contact your US Senator and Representatives and urge them not to pass this bill. If you aren't, inform your parents. Show them this post if you have to, as well as the link below. -Novus http://www.extremetech.com/computing/111543-google-amazon-facebook-and-twitter-considering-nuclear-option-to-protest-sopa |

It absolutely floors me that the government would even consider of doing such a thing. From what I can tell, this makes zero sense. I can totally understand the issue of unwarranted piracy. That would be theft and is unethical and disrespectful towards the creator(s) of that idea/product. However, abolishing these websites all together is the absolute wrong way of going about this. It will be a major blow to the economy if these companies and conglomerates are shut down. On a much smaller scale, for much of my business and purchases I NEED these services to do what I do. What they should be doing is rewriting the copyright laws, which are atrocious anyways and are very dated. I usually stay out of politics, but I would participate in a case like this. However, I am also doubtful that congress would even care about the people's voice at this point. It's also hard for me to actually see them go through with this because of the authoritarian connotations. More info: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act |

It's a money issue. Enough lobbyists have paid the right people to push through a bill like this. They are trying to solve a problem that will always remain a problem. I never saw anyone get arrested or any radio stations get shutdown when people used to record songs from the radio to a tape. And no, Congress does not care about the people's voice, thus the continued "occupy" demonstrations in most major cities. https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml I've found and wrote to my house representative.

Yeah likewise there's sod all i can do over here on the rock, However best of luck in this, as it would destroy the freedom that the internet stands for. Perhaps some of you with more info on this could clarify but would this just affect sites that are hosted in the US, or would it be for sites viewed in the US. If it is the first then they would shoot themselves for passing it as all the sites would migrate to other hosts in other countries, however if it is the second then it could be very serious. |

Foreign websites are affected as well. The bill itself is "supposed to" target only Foreign websites that post, or allow their users to post, copyrighted content online. Supporters of the bill claim that this will protect US Citizens against things like counterfeit drugs (such as those spam emails for viagra and things), and protect the recording industry from piracy since some of the biggest pirating websites are hosted outside of the US. However, it doesn't just stop there. The bill would require that ALL Us-Based internet providers block content on-command. It would also begin to affect US-based websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc, because it allows for the complete removal and blocking of ANY content that the original creator deems to be a copyright infringement. EX) AMVs, those interesting videos that use songs and time them to either Anime or Video Game characters.. the song's performer, writer, or record label can currently ask that a video be removed, but they don't. This law would make it so that the US Government could basically tell YouTube "Ok, you have to delete these videos or we're shutting you down", even if the song's creator didn't give a Sith. EX) "Memes" could then be considered a copyright infringement for using famous actors, company logos, etc. Anyway, that's the gist of it. Here's a full article on Wikipedia that is fairly accurate, and used as one of Anonymous' sources on the Facebook page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act |

So, how exactly is this supposed to solve copyright problems? They'd have to remove damn near every website on the internet, because it would've had at least one copyright thing on it, and they'd get a LOT of compliants. Edited by Zack, Jan 16 2012, 08:36 PM.

Wikipedia? Nooo, where am I supposed to go for my next exam? Oh, it's only for a day, phew. If the major websites like Wikipedia, Youtube, Facebook, eBay and reddit goes against SOPA, there should be a bigger chance of not having it approved. I didn't say 4chan because 4chan is like the mentally challenged child of the internet, and no one takes them seriously. |
