i don't know what happened. one morning i just woke up to turn on my pc and then it starts but the sound it usually makes just begins to fade and fade. i greet a black and blank screen which stays for about one minute. then text appears and reads that my pc's windows/system32/config/system file is missing or corrupt. it's asking for my recovery disks to attempt to repair the file. and so for the past time i have been off xfire and the server trying to locate the disks or come up with some other way of fixing it. so far nothing worked. my current attempt is to try my grandfathers disks as he owns a vaio pc like mine. i have been observing the forums with my psp, cell phone, and using the ps3 to type this now, yet to buy a usb keyboard. so if you have been wondering what i was up to, now you know and know that help is appreciated. |

that's my fear of using the recovery disk. i would rather wait and find a way to recover the data on my pc which contains a lot of my work. signatures, videos, and text recordings for certain projects. my only regret is that i placed most of that on the c drive. luckily, the fraps videos i stored on my d drive which contained the most space allowing me to record more. the recovery disks only affect everything on the c drive. d drive including games has data untouched. this is also a relief as i only have a burned play disk of ja to play. |

ok i did try something a bit back and it worked somewhat. so if you have a extra hard drive put that one in as a master then put the mess up in as a slave and once you get some of the stuff set up move the stuff from the slave to the new master and then take out the slave and format it. i did this and it worked sry if you get confused |

I wish. Otherwise I'd be on linux forever. There's server files, but I haven't been able to find a client. There are recovery programs out there that can help you back up data off of an otherwise corrupt HD. |

doubtful because Linux is 1) not nearly as widespread as Mac and Windows, and 2) Linux is not a uniform operating system. There's a few different types of Linux Source which have been made into dozens of different operating systems. |

Actually, there are alot of retail games out for Linux, you just have to know where to find them. I too just went through what you did. What you can do, is do the reinstallation and make sure you do NOT do the Advanced reformat recovery. I just went through all this crap last month. Luckily, when it reinstalled windows, there was a corrupted yet compact sector in C called "USER". I have programs and a few cracks that work for these programs if you need them. They Work, I recovered everything, hell I found internet history from 3 years ago. Even High School projects long deleted. |

Slave your current hard drive to another PC and drop the data onto that secondary machine. Reformat the hard drive, reinstall windows, install your programs, slave the harddrive to other other machine again and bring back your data, and enjoy your PC. (Also, go into the bios and have it run a hard drive self test. =) ) As for Linux.. It is much like using DOS (commands are a bit different, but essentially the same) DirectX games may have an issue running unless a compatable linux program is available (DirectX is a microsoft only program). Linux doesn't use as many useless processes like windows does. Linux can be run on any machine, in some cases running soley on RAM (won't touch the hard drive) Linux is more stable than windows. Linux is more secure Linux is open source (don't like something... change it.) AoF's JKA server and website server are both run on linux machines. Linux does have it's draw backs: Not everything works on linux Kinda scary outside of a GUI system (unless you and DOS are good friends) Power outages can cause a loss in all data. and more |

I think the GUI thing is why Ubuntu seems to be so popular now. |
