STAR WARS

--ANGELS OF FIRE--

~The Fourth Moon of the planet Yavin

As it did every morning, the sun began its slow trip from horizon to horizon. Its light illuminated not only the moon, but the crimson red gas giant that hung in the sky over head. The planet Yavin filled the sky with its overwhelming presence, looming over the ancient Massassi temples that now served as the Jedi Academy. The dense forest surrounding the temples teemed with all forms of creatures, both big and small, permeating the jungle with the essence of the Living Force.

The temple complex was, of course, not the only Jedi Academy in the galaxy. After a particularly turbulent period of rebuilding and restructuring following the Yuuzhan Vong War, the New Jedi Order had amassed enough resources to build a new academy on Ossus and restore the temple on Coruscant. It was there, on the capital world of the New Republic that the High Council sat and pondered the very meaning of the Force.

With the help of the Jedi, the Republic was able to subdue the Vong at last and return peace and justice to society. Great Jedi like Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade, Kyle Katarn, Kyp Durron, Jaden Korr, as well as the children of Leia Organa and Han Solo: Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin, fought in that war. Many brave Jedi gave their lives and joined the Living Force in that conflict. In those days, the Jedi were very few, and were still recovering from the Great Purge of the Order that happened during the Clone Wars. It was a terrible price the galaxy had to pay for justice and peace, but a necessary one, for the new Jedi Order that would ultimately emerge would be much stronger, having been tested against a truly insidious foe.

The war with the Yuuzhan Vong had reduced their numbers even further, driving the Jedi numbers down to a mere two hundred. Thankfully, because of their dedication to justice and peace, the light of freedom was not extinguished forever. After the long years of conflict with the Yuuzhan Vong the galaxy had much healing to do, but the Jedi were always there to help.

It took much restructuring, and even more effort, but after three hundred years the Jedi ranks had swelled from that lowly two hundred to an impressive three thousand.

One of those three thousand was a man by the name of Torin Cruiser.

If one were to look at him, one would never think him to be a Master Jedi. Still in his prime at only thirty two years of age, Cruiser was a rather tall human, but still unassuming in his appearance, as most humans are. His light brown hair provided a sharp contrast to his deep cobalt eyes, perhaps the only things about him that stood out.

More often than not he wore a weathered old grey jacket that had the faint remains of what were once vibrant blue undertones. His pants were nothing special, and were held up by a simple utility belt, from which hung his most treasured possession, a blue bladed lightsaber.

In short, if one did not know him personally, one might have mistaken him for a navigator on a spice freighter or a farmer from Dantooine.

As Master Cruiser came close to one of the Yavin Academy's many training rooms, his hand instinctively reached down to his hip to see if his laser sword was still there. Sure enough, it was still firmly attached to the belt, and the feeling of the metallic hilt against the skin of his palm allowed a feeling of reassurance to wash over him.

The entrance portal was large and foreboding, like all portals in the Yavin Academy’s temples. Perhaps the only thing that would reassure a person who stood in front of the massive door was the fact that the symbol of the old Rebel Alliance was still emblazoned on its façade. The Jedi had adopted it as their symbol even after the New Republic had done away with it.

The deep red shades of the symbol filled Torin with warmth as he pressed a few buttons on the control panel next to the door, allowing him entrance to the room

Completely the opposite of the outer door, the chamber itself was really rather plain, the ancient and elaborate, but ultimately evil, Sith runes having long ago been removed. Black marble walls were illuminated by the soft white light fixtures attached to the ceiling, creating the very essence of the word grey. In each corner of the room was a plastisteel cylinder which held training remotes used for teaching padawans the art of blaster deflection with a lightsaber.

Torin Cruiser was here though for a different reason, one that did not involve playing with simple remotes.

Sitting quietly on the cylinder in the far right corner of the room, adjacent to the door, was another Jedi. His dark, bulbous Rodian eyes drilled holes in the human who casually entered, and his antennae twitched with irritation at the aura the man was giving off.

Getting off of the cylinder, Jedi Master Nob Facado took a few steps forward, pointing one of his long fingers at the human who approached him.

“You are late again, Cruiser,” said the Rodian in his heavily accented Basic. “Where were you?”

“I couldn’t miss breakfast, you know?” Cruiser replied nonchalantly, flashing one of his trademark Correllian grins. “Good nutrition is an important part of a Jedi‘s lifestyle.“

Facado visibly frowned at that, and crossed his arms in annoyance.

“Bah, don’t start that now, Torin,” the Rodian countered. “You humans just like to stuff your faces, and that‘s that. Now, let’s get this over with. I have students to teach and I can’t waste all morning sparring with you!”

Cruiser just smiled again, and unhooked his lightsaber from his belt. When he ignited the saber, a shining turquoise beam about a meter in length shot forth from the emitter. He held his saber close to his body in the classic Soresu stance, a highly defensive form of lightsaber combat.

In the grey light, another saber ignited, the one belonging to Master Facado. It’s blade was almost a cobalt color, due to the special crystal the Rodian Jedi had placed inside the emitter. Facado held his saber loosely at his side, in the Makashi form, an impossibly precise style of saber fencing that very few Jedi had ever mastered.

For what seemed like an eternity, but in reality was only a few minutes, the two friends sized each other up. They had sparred with each other every other morning for the past ten years, but no two duels between them had ever gone the same way. Both men were equally strong in the Force, but had vastly different reputations when it came to their lightsaber techniques.

Silently, the two Jedi opened themselves to the Force. Without saying anything, the two of them allowed the Living Force to swirl around them until it penetrated them and began to flow like a river. As they had so many times before, their eyes slowly closed as they reached out with their feelings in an attempt to see which way the other would go first.

However, after a few seconds, Facado suddenly stopped focusing on Cruiser. His bulbous eyes flashed open with alarm, and he deactivated his lightsaber.

“Torin,” he said, calling his friend by his first name. “Can you feel that? I sense a disturbance in the Force.”

Master Cruiser immediately shuttered his own saber and focused intently on the object of Facado's attention.

“No, it’s not a disturbance,” Cruiser replied, his voice stern. “It’s more of a presence. A very familiar presence, one I haven’t felt in ages.”

When recognition finally hit him, the human Jedi nearly dropped his lightsaber in shock.

His voice devoid of any emotion, Cruiser uttered only five audible words.

“It’s him. He has returned…”

End Teaser Chapter

~This is just a teaser for now. The rest shall follow when I find the time and energy to write more. This novella is being written in conjunction with CruiserX's comic. The two will follow the same basic storyline, with some deviation between the two.
