When he first entered, I didn't really notice him much. He was quiet, stayed off on his own, didn't really interact much, and I was always with my friends and distracted with gossip or inside jokes to notice a newcomer beyond pleasantries on the first day. They didn't like him, though. They said he made them feel weird, and that his dancing was stiff or soulless. I didn't really notice. Not until our instructor started pairing us up for a new routine. At first, pairing up wasn't so bad. Our instructor allowed us to team up as friends, but when it was obvious that some people were left out from that, he began pairing the rest of them up manually. Of course, one of my best friends grabbed my arm right away, her eyes sparkling with excitement at the prospect of working together, but when it was evident that no one wanted to work with the newcomer, I sighed. Did people really not like him that much? Sure, he was tall, but it wasn't like he was a giant. He was just...lanky. And awkward. And sad. "Hey. I'm Enya," I said, holding my hand out. "Uh...R-Ryouta..." he replied, cautiously taking my hand. Standing next to him, I started to notice his height a little better. It honestly wasn't that bad, not enough for people to use an excuse to avoid him at least. Then again, I was pretty tall myself, clocking in around 5'7" (5'9" in heels). Still, he was only a little bit taller than me. Not enough to be an issue in the slightest. Getting into places now, we started with the basic form of ballroom dancing, making sure everyone was comfortable with the movements for a simple box-step. But more important, that we were comfortable with our partners. However, I was pleased to find that Ryouta did know what he was doing. It was just his heart did not seem to be into it at all. And he was quiet, and avoided my eyes and barely spoke...but he didn't step on my toes and he didn't stink, so I couldn't bring myself to complain. "So, how was it, dancing with Mr Moody?" Scoffing as my shoulder was lightly pushed as we walked to our favourite cafe after dance practice, I shrug. "He's not that bad, honestly. Just quiet. He knows his stuff, though!" "Oh, no one is questioning that! But technique is one thing. How are we going to get anywhere as a troupe, though, if our soul isn't in it? Especially you, Enya! I'm seriously worried. You know why we're doing ballroom dances now, right?" "Yeah, yeah... Competition season..." "The big one this year is couples! It's not just the whole group this time, it's gonna be almost individual level! This is such a good opportunity for you! I really, really don't like the idea of you being paired with this...heartless guy who could ruin that for you!" "And what about you, Lindsey? Come on, don't make this all about me! You're talking as if I'm the only dancer in this studio!" I laugh, trying desperately to avoid the topic of dance futures. People may say I'm good, but...no way in hell could I compete at that level. Even if I did make it, I don't think I could personally take the stress of going through with it. "No, but I mean it! Look, Enya." Stopping now, I sigh as Lindsey holds my shoulders, staring me in the eye. "You love dancing, right? You have so much passion for it! This guy is gonna suck it out of you, I feel it! You need to talk to Mr Darcell about this. You need to get someone else." "Fine, fine. Look, I'll talk to him tomorrow if this guy is really all that bad. But I think he's just shy! You always jump to conclusions," I say, brushing her hands off my shoulders before heading into the coffee shop. "I doubt he's gonna be all that bad, but I'll talk to Darcell if I need to, okay. Now how is your partner?" |
