Naw Nathan. I really don't think he would've. At least as his is now. He's too kid friendly. I mean, I was mainly referring to late Attitude Era. '98-'00. I mean we're talking about a time when Austin was being strapped to for all intents and purposes a cross. A time when HHH beat his father-in-law (just storyline at the time) bloody in front of her own dad, and then made out with her over his unconscious body.

Cena's like a slightly less corny Hogan, and even Hogan was heel at the time. But I think had they changed him into a darker villian, he may have had a chance to be successful. I don't know how exactly they could've done that tho.

McMahon is all about the money and Cena draws more of it today than Undertaker, Foley, Triple H and even The Rock during Attitude. At the very least he would have been pushed to the moon; WWF Champion, WrestleMania headliner, Royal Rumble winner, etc..

Whether he would’ve gotten over in the same way during Attitude is another matter, but would Hogan have drawn flies in the late nineties with his prayers and vitamins rhetoric? Would Austin have been the most popular wrestler ever in the family-friendly eighties? Would McMahon even push Austin if he came along today? Probably not.

I'm willing to say that it could have gone either way. Maybe he'd be the second most popular babyface on the roster, seeing as Foley was #2 depending on what the Rock was up to. Maybe he'd be stuck in a tag team with K-Kwick, feuding with T&A.

Well that's the problem with the WWE today. If you don't get over within three weeks or so of your debut, you're considered midcard for life or worse, future endevoured.

They seem to forget that none of their big stars from the past decade, Austin, Cena, Rock, were overnight successes. If Cena came in on the Smackdown after Mania with the gimmick he had when he started, the young Blue Chipper looking to make a name for himself, he'd be gone by the Summer.

Too true, McMahon seems too impatient these days. This is why there needs to be good healthy competition, to keep him on track.

98-99 was terrible, so I wouldn't be surprised. We're talking about a time when only The Rock, Owen and Foley were holding down decent matches, because Austin was saddled with the Undertaker and Kane for the most part, both of whom sucked. Then Owen failed skydiving lessons and Foley knackered his knee, so that left Rock trying to get something out of Mark Henry.

What is Cena's gimmick? Your wannabe-commando jock mate who spends all day on the Wii? At least he's not trying to rap any more.

I have a soft spot for 98 as it was the time I got into the biz. Looking back tho, 1999 was pretty bad. The whole Corporate Ministry thing was 700 different kinds of failure.

Plus, even after that storyline concluded, HHH's repetitive promos got annoying.

Ah, the Oddities, that takes me back. A collection of freaks, a pimp and a pornstar. 98 was at least interesting, you have to give it that..

The Rock responds:

Quote:

The Sun tabloid newspaper in the United Kingdom have comments from The Rock after World champion John Cena challenged him for a match at WrestleMania 26 in Glendale. "John's perspective is very interesting to me.
It's borderline laughable," said the former people's champion. A couple of years ago Cena spilled the beans saying that for someone who says that he loves the wrestling business so much, he should have never left for
Hollywood full time. "But can I just say that I wish him the best of luck with his movie career and everything else he does," The Rock added. Last year at the Hall of Fame, Rock made fun of Cena's movie "The Marine" saying
that WWE showed it to the Iraqi insurgents as torture while on their Tribute to the Troops tour.

World Heavyweight Champion John Cena has been very outspoken about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's transition from the WWE Universe to Hollywood. Cena recently issued a challenge to The Rock for a match at next year's WrestleMania. Unfortunately for wrestling fans, that match does not appear likely.

In an interview with the TheSun.co.uk, Johnson was asked about John Cena's recent claim that he turned his back on pro wrestling. "John’s perspective is very interesting to me. It's borderline laughable. But can I just say that I wish him the best of luck with his movie career and everything else he does." Johnson added that he will probably never wrestle again.

When asked if he was upset about missing this year's Hall of Fame ceremony, John said, "I don't mind missing it – I was out promoting a movie. I was very happy about Steve Austin being inducted into the Hall Of Fame. Steve and I are good friends. Last year I had the chance to induct my grandfather and my dad and it was a true honour. In that world of professional wrestling, WrestleMania is a very special time for the wrestlers and the Hall Of Fame is very special for the former wrestlers."

The latest issue of ESPN: The Magazine has an interview with John Cena called "7 Things You Should Know About Being a WWE Superstar." Here is the interview in its entirety:

7 Things You Should Know About Being a WWE Superstar

1. Writers write, fighters fight.
"I see myself as an actor, and I choose not to have much input in my story. So I find out only a few hours before the broadcast what will happen. The creative team doesn't know inside-the-ring stuff, though. They tell us who's going to win or be disqualified and we take it from there."

2. I had to find myself.
"One of the big reasons for my success is I get to be me. At first, I was a white rapper thug from the mean streets of West Newbury, Mass. Some fans hated me but that's how it goes. We have guys who save the day and others who deserve to get hit. But once I got in the door, I spent the next four years tranforming into John Cena."

3. We're more than just action figures.
"I try to manage my likeness, but the WWE does a lot of licensing, so I end up seeing a lot of products that make me cringe. I'm all for merchandising, but John Cena car floor mats or nesting dolls don't seem right."

4. En Garde? Always.
"Most people I meet try to wrestle me. It happens at least once a day - especially at the airport. When I'm carrying the champion's belt in my bag, it usually leads to a 'random' search. Everyone crowds around, and someone says, "Let's fight." I'm like, "I'm just trying to catch a flight."

5. There are no timeouts.
"I once tore a pectoral muscle doing a routine hip throw. There was 18 minutes left in the fight. I figured since I was going to the hospital afterward anyway, I might as well finish. You think it's all painless, but this stuff can hurt extremely badly."

6. Things change - unless they don't.
"Consumers are smarter now, so we admit what we do is entertainment. And we've changed programming. But the bones are the same. Pro wrestling like action films, is still about good vs. evil."

7. I won't bite the hand.
"A lot of wrestlers reach a point where they feel it's not cool to be in WWE. Not me. I can do movies and work full-time here. Why would I ever say it's not good enough?"

-- In an interview with IGN UK, former WWE Superstar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is asked about John Cena's attempt to branch out into acting and follow in his footsteps.

Johnson replied: "I don't look at myself for being a trailblazer in any way, or paving the way or anything like that, I just know what serves me. John is... umm... he's an interesting guy! And I wish him well in his movie career and, umm, everything else... Haha."

I don't think too much should be read into this. Rock gave us some great moments while he was a part of the wrestling world.

If he wants that phase of his life to be over, then who are we (including Cena) to judge him? Doing both WWE and movies is for some people. Obviously it wasn't for the Rock. And he's found a niche as a semi-decent actor, otherwise he would've come back (ala Hogan).

I say both go their own ways and do what works for them.

I think that was a bit subtle, John. Not sure what you're trying to say there.

On a different track, I'm surprised he geuninely carries the belt around with him. Considering how much the spinner belt supposedly costs, I find that a little strange.

I think they've agreed to a match and this is the beginning of the build up.

They'll rip each other all year and Rock will agree to one more match at Mania

I'm calling it now
