I was in Paris the other day reading a magazine, and there was a feature about a group from around here called The Sand Band. I knew the keyboard player from school, so I'm a bit biased, but I think they're worth paying attention to. I went to see them do a session at the BBC last night, which was fine. If you like atmospheric folk, which I know a few of you do, I'd definitely check out their album, All Through the Night. The first half is excellent even if the second meanders a little bit (they don't seem extremely concerned with meoldy, which is sometimes a strength and other times lets them down a tad). You can download it here, anyway: http://bitshare.com/files/r6i71e4r/TSB-ATTN.rar.html I'd be quite interested in hearing any local music where you lot live, because it's practically impossible to find unless someone turns you onto it. Liverpool right now has an improving scene with some nice venues. |

I tried really hard to care about our local music scene, but I realized they were playing in bars for a reason and were pretty awful while sober. However, The National were relatively close. I don't care too much for them outside of this song and it's mostly because the video is fantastic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfySK7CLEEg Short of death I'm seeing Elvis Costello in June. |

Your mistake was being sober in a bar. |

It's impossible to be sober in a bar. The sober part came later when I thought the band was brilliant and just had to look them up. I have yet to learn not to do that. |

Same reason you shouldn't look up pub rock. It can only be enjoyed when you've drank yourself into a state of higher meditative zen. |

Does that rule get cancelled out if a member of the band was playing spoons? |

I always forget to count them as local, but if you haven't already listened to New Bomb Turks, they were brilliant. |

Wellity wellity wellity. Turns out John Cooper Clarke is supporting The Fall. And I'm seeing Lau in September. Who cares, right? Well. They're supporting Dave Swarbrick and Martin fucking Carthy, who would be my #1 and #2 if you were to ask me "greatest English guitarists of all time. Then it's Julian Cope in October. I know a lot of this won't mean a thing to most of you, but I'm practically wet. This could only get better if Jimi Hendrix himself rose from the grave and played in my back garden. |

I can't remember their name, but the last band I saw had a bassist that looked exactly like Moby. Even better one of their guitarists did a cover of Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun in the style of Bob Dylan. In other words he did a brilliant Bob Dylan impersonation while singing Lauper. He inserted a De La Soul song in the middle. It was great. |

Saw Amsterdam over the weekend, followed by John Head from Shack. Also a band called Fly With Vampires, who were okay. Then saw a Bowie tribute act, followed by a Queen tribute act. Got in a fight with some old people and then some young people. Won both. Drank lots. Had mad sex. Which sounds good, but it doesn't match last year's Mathew Street Festival, which was pretty much a two day coke binge. Edited by Lance, Aug 30 2011, 12:26 PM.
