It's time again for another Total Nonstop Action ppv. Before I get into the meat of the show, I want to bring something up. Recently, some of the wrestlers in TNA have expressed an interest in breaking their contract, most notably Senshi, BG & Kip James. It's also being speculated that Samoa Joe might not renew his contract. With such a large roster, it might behoove TNA to cut some fat from their show. I hate to see Senshi go and Joe definitely has crowd appeal, but if the *snicker* Voodoo Kin Mafia want to go, I say let them. Who cares where they go; obviously WWE. Just lean back and relax in the knowledge that while they'll be welcomed back to the E with open arms, in a couple months' time, both men will be stale with the fans and be relegated to kissing Hunter's feet and laying down for him and whoever else needs the rub. Honestly, if someone doesn't want to work for you anymore, don't force them to stay. If anything, it should spark a lightbulb that something might be wrong with the way you're doing business. I also want to mention the Victory Road poster. While I like having Gail Kim on it (and damn she is looking fine), I have to wonder why they have LAX down the left side. Konnan is no longer with the company and Homocide/Hernandez aren't even on the card. I realize that poster are made months ahead of time, but if something big changes, it would be wise to pull the old posters and put out a new one to reflect the change. It just shows how much TNA cares about the details of their company. Don't they realize the devil is in the details? Anyway..... 10-Man Gauntlet 7/10 - I realize this is just an excuse to get 10 men on the ppv who normally wouldn't be on it and it also brings about the return of Triple X. Didn't someone mention that Triple X was banned from reforming? Way to run with continuity. I guess we're not meant to question it, just be excited that three X-Division singles are now a tag team again. I'm a little hesitant about the stipulations - it's a Royal Rumble until everyone is introduced and then it turns into an Ultimate X, regardless of who is left. I'm surprised Petey Williams was the 2nd person to be thrown out. I loved the spot where Kazarian (I'm not going to call him Kaz because it's just stupid) takes Daniels down onto the outside mat. Obvious, but nice to watch. I have to say that Daniels winning does nothing for me. Christopher Daniels vs. Samoa Joe at Hard Justice is meh in my book. Basham/Damaja w/Christy & Lance Hoyt vs. VKM 4/10 - I guess Hemme is fully committed to being the heel because it's obvious BG & Kip refuse to be one. This is the 2nd ppv win for VKM and I can't really see where this feud is going. What's the point of Lance siding with Christy when she's already got two men backing her up? I guess three is better than two? Regardless, I've no interest in this. Basham/Damaja could be a decent tag team in TNA, but they should have been brought in strong instead of being Christy's 2nd team choice and then gaining a greater loss than win record against their opponents. It can be salvaged, but this VKM feud needs to end. Maybe start something up with Triple X. Thoughts about Roxxi Laveaux - VKM's Voodoo Queen. Considering that neither Kip nor BG have anything to do with voodoo in their gimmick, I can't see how she fits in. She might have worked out if Jeff Hardy was still around. Or with Raven's Serotonin. Her outfit sucks and I see she doesn't have much wrestling background, so she's hardly a wrestling asset for a potential women's division. As for the match, with all of the interference from Lance Hoyt, I figured a win for B/D was in the can. *shrug* I don't care enough for this crappy match. Rhino vs. James Storm 5/10 - I'm really not buying Storm's alcoholic gimmick. Maybe I take my wrestling too seriously, but this isn't a cartoon and if TNA's moniker is "We are wrestling." dammit, they need to stop this gimmicky soap opera crap right quick. Logic says that if James is a drunk and management allows him to compete intoxicated, they should be facing criminal charges along with Storm. What are you saying to the kids that watch the show? If you drink and bust bottles over your opponent's head, you'll win. I also feel they've mismanaged Storm's feud with Chris Harris. They could have had tons of drama built around James' problem with alcohol; he attacks his friend and then feels sorry and everything slowly eats away at him; he feels torn between keeping their friendship and just turning evil; he knows he has a problem but can't find the courage to face his addiction. It really could have been interesting and really speak to people about the horrors of substance abuse, but instead they made him an carbon copy cartoon drunk heel. Could we see a potential heel turn for Rhino? I'm for it, he works better as a heel. As long as they make the turn a simmer and take their time molding it, it could lead to big things. It's got potential. They'll fuck it up. Jerry Lynn & Bob Backlund vs. Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley 5/10 - Sabin & Shelley could be leading the way with the X Division, but instead they're paired up as an undercard tag team. Shelley's 2nd team, mind you. TNA must have no faith in either man as singles. I also don't like Backlund's crazy gimmick. You know, for a promotion that says they don't cater to entertainment, they sure are gimmick friendly. Backlund could (and should) be the Finlay of TNA, not the Boogeyman. Eric Young & Gail Kim vs. Robert Roode & Tracy Brooks 5/10 - I really have a soft spot for Eric....and a hard spot for Gail! Ba-dum-bum. heh! Seriously though, they're dragging out this feud way too long. I think it's because creative doesn't have anything for either man. Hey, we'll keep them facing each other. It's a shame. The former member of a once powerful faction are now nothing more than sub-undercard players. It's time for these men to move on to bigger things. Christian Cage vs. Chris Harris 5/10 - Will Dustin be joining the Coalition or did he just attack Harris for no reason? I'd like to take a moment and say when you have interference in over half of the matches on the card, something is wrong. This is shotty writing at its worst. You want someone to come down and interference in one match on the card - fine. Four or five is overkill. I really don't see the point in Dustin interfering anyway. It came out of left field and it's not as though his return is any great unforgettable moment. We'll see where they go with this. Abyss & Sting vs. Tomko & Styles 5/10 - I seem to constantly repeat myself with comments of TNA and here's another - I don't like what they're doing with Abyss. A monster shouldn't talk. A monster, which is how they describe Abyss, should be a monster - an evil, unthinking force bent on doing whatever it takes to win. Is this humanization Abyss' idea? It's a bad one, regardless of whose it is. The match was average. I'm just not into it. Team 3D vs. Kurt Angle & Samoa Joe 4/10 - First off, let me say this is the stupidest stipulation I've ever heard of. Whoever gets the pin wins that person's title. According to what they've said, though, if Joe pins Devon, shouldn't he just win Devon's belt, not both of the tag titles? It's a stipulation that leaves me scratching my head wondering what the hell the writers are smoking. You've tied up all of your titles into one match. Not a good idea. Somehow I think they're playing off of WWE's Vengeance gimmick of all titles are on the line, but somewhere got their wires crossed and came up with this. Then I learn that since Joe wins the tag titles, he can choose who his partner will be. That sounds stupid as well. One could argue that Joe doesn't have a lot of friends in TNA, so it makes people wonder who will side with him. All I see it that you've now not only got the Tag Titles tied up on one person, but you've also got the X-Division title on that person as well. Putting the X title on Joe again was a mistake and I can see why he'd be rethinking signing a new contract with people who aren't going to do something worthwhile with him. At least in ROH, he was in title contention. Over Kurt Angle and Samoa Joe, I'd pick Joe to appease. Angle only has so much left in him and he's proven he's not the draw TNA thought he'd be. Stick with the young guns that fans like. Of course, they won't. One thing about Angle and his promos beating up on the X Division. What's the point of it? Are they trying to show he's insane? Doesn't it prove how scared or weak Angle really is if he's looking for backup to go to the ring with him? And the promo with Serotonin was poorly timed. Don't cut to a promo at the beginning of your main event! God, I feel like TNA is run by 5th graders. Show overall 5/10 - This is preaching to the choir, but TNA needs some vast improvements. They need to cut away the fat of the roster, focus on the X Division, stop all of the Mickey Mouse cartoon stories and put together some memoriable feuds. They've got the tools, they've got the wrestling talent. They just need to pull their head out of the ground and wake up. -------------------------------------------- I realize I didn't do a recommendation for Victory Road when I reviewed Slammiversary. I could be clever and say I was so disappointed, but I'm trying to remain positive and not too degrading. Remember, this is a recommendation, not predictions! Hard Justice 2007 Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe - TNA title match (In the interim, Joe chooses Angle as his partner against Team 3D on Impact, but Angle screws Joe and 3D regain their titles. The following week, Joe defends his title against Christopher Daniels and when Senshi & Skipper begin to interfere, Angle comes out attacking them. Just when he looks to have helped Joe, he turns on Joe and costs Joe the X-Division title. Later on in the show, Joe demands Angle at Hard Justice. Cornette says that he'll give Joe the match if he can beat Christian Cage the following week in a Number One contender's match. Tomko and Styles try to interfere, but Chris Harris comes down and lays waste to them. Joe becomes No. 1 contender.) During the title match, when it looks like Joe is going to win, Angle exits the ring and tries to escape, but out come the people he attacked at Victory Road - Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, Serotonin. They all grab him and throw him back into the ring. Christopher Daniels vs. Petey Williams - X Division Match (Senshi & Skipper are banned from ringside.) Christian Cage vs. Abyss Chris Harris vs. AJ Styles w/Tomko James Storm & Robert Roode vs. Rhino & Sting (Post match, Sting tries to help Rhino up, but he pulls away. He quickly apologizes and leaves alone. Sting can gain a semi-gimmick of being a prophet or something where he thinks he can save Rhino, like he did Abyss, but it eventually backfires and causes Rhino to turn heel.) Team 3D vs. Scott & Rick Steiner - TNA Tag titles Eric Young w/Gail Kim vs. Alex Shelley w/Chris Sabin - Bob Backlund comes down and attacks Sabin early in the match. LAX vs. VKM vs. Damaja/Basham w/Lance & Christy - Tag Team Number 1 Contender's match. Some kind of controversy with Roxxi Laveaux "accidentally" costing the VKM the win. |
