Top 100 Matches of the Monday Night Wars; A project?

Hey, I was a tad bored, and was wondering if anybody would be up for doing one of those "project" type deals that you see on other boards. We've done stuff like this on V1, I think, with the AWT's Greatest Worker Poll, but I'm curious as to how it would work out here on V2, given that we've got a milieu of new guys like nascar and myself (I didn't really participate much on V1) with their own views on stuff that I think it'd be pretty interesting.

I don't want to draw up any rules yet, but being as the proposed topic is the best matches of the Monday Night Wars, we're looking at WWF and WCW (maybe ECW?) matches from 9/4/95 to 3/26/01. PPV and TV matches, which means that HaiC I is probably gonna win, but whatever.

Any takers?

I'd be up for it. I was waiting for Euan's latest project, but he's around about as often as English snow.

What's going to be your number one, Jane? Hell In A Cell or Mind Games?

There's actually a debate to be had about that?

By the way, marchhaire, I'm working on a project myself about the comparison of awesome ROH events to the best events of all-time.

Yeah. I have Mind Games down as the best WWE match I've ever seen, whereas others would have Badd Blood down as superior. It depends whether you prefer an even match or a total dicking. Both are extremely well worked but marred by bad finishes.

Bret's name will be cropping up a lot in this. Both the Survivor Series and WrestleMania Austin matches, the Mania Owen match and even the Iron Man with Shawn have fair chances of making it to number one. Unfortunately the cage match with Owen will also be up there.

I'm obviously in.

Of, if we're going by Marchhaire's dates, Bret/Owen stuff won't be eligible.

HIAC or Mind Games #1? Lulz.

Thank fuck.

Mind Games > that shitty cage match, anyway.

I'm up for it. And I too prefer Mind Games to Bad Blood, as I've said time and time again. I don't care that Mind Games ended with an annoying, useless fat man running down the ring (interesting to note is that the ref rang the bell even before Vader started hitting Shawn). The amazing display Foley and Shawn put on makes the ending seem negligible.

I won't have anyone saying Vader was useless. He was about fifty times better than Foley and possibly better than Michaels.

In fact, I might give the match the full five snowflakes just because of the appearance of that red jockstrap mask.

We need a media thread dedicated to this then and lots of uploads.

How shall we do this? A thread for nominations, people go off and make their lists after a while of watching, downloading, smarkly analysing, then we count votes and do a countdown poll? Like smarkschoice?

Well, obviously in his day the man could work, and even when he wrestled for AJPW in 1999 he was good, but during the time he spent in the WWF he seemed a bit down. I'd say he got a bit lazy. His matches with Shawn Michaels and the Final Four match weren't carry jobs, but Vader's opponent would put on a better display if the match was truly remarkable in the WWF.

Agreed, but even his humiliating performance against Batista shouldn't warrant insults. I don't know whether you've ever been told this but Vader actually invented lungs before God stole the idea.

Whats going to be the high end WCW matches?

Eddie/Rey - Halloween Havoc '97
Bret/Benoit - 10/99 (Say nothing Lance)
......I'm now drawing a blank as to anything near full snowflakes.

Possibly Jericho/Mysterio from Fall Brawl?

I agree with the idea of having somewhere between 10-20 offer their top matches, and then someone could make up the list. I'd assemble it, if you want, since I do have a fetish for ranking things.

Rey Mysterio Vs. Super Calo from Fall Brawl 1996, Billy Kidman Vs. Rey Mysterio Vs. Juvi Guerrera from Starrcade 1998, among others that I'll remember as I review matches I have.

Did WCW ever have a good main event?

When Vader was headlining in 1993-1994 he pulled out a few decent ones with Flair and a gem with Davey Boy Smith.

All I can think of from main event WCW are carry jobs. Benoit/Sid, Steiner/Sid, DDP/Goldberg... By the time the Monday Night Wars came along, Vader had left and Flair was worse than ever. The Bret/Benoit matches and some of the better cruiserweight battles (Guerrero, Rey, Ultimo etc) should be the only ones that feature highly. Maybe some Jericho.

Oh, and Lord Steven vs the Belfast Bruiser from Uncensored '96. There are a couple of decent Finlay/Benoit/Regal combinations floating around, like Slamboree '98 I think it was.
