Watching 'Cowboy Bebop'. Session #5: Ballad of Fallen Angels

Excellence in a nutshell. The cathedral scene is incredible.

Watched some of the Amityville Horror remake (I don't remember much of the original, except that I found it mildly amusing as a seven year old), got bored and switched over to Serenity, which entertained and infuriated me in equal measure until I fell asleep and woke up with an inexplicable hangover.

Went to see A Serious Man. It was a pretty narrow escape from watching 2012.

Did you like it?

I thought it was quite good. Best of the three good movies I saw over the weekend (and better than the middling Paranormal Activity).

Other two movies were Where the Wild Things Are and The Men Who Stare At Goats.

Also saw the Venture Brothers last night.

I liked it a lot. Not as much as Lebowski but loads more than No Country For Old Men. The best part is that the theater is running The Room right now so we saw that afterwards. It's better with the MST3K guys, but still incredible how bad it is.

How much like Blair Witch was Paranormal Activity?

I really like Ewan McGregor and the previews looked good. Is it worth seeing with 2012 as a necessary payback? I really hate disaster films, so is it excellent?

I won't be seeing 2012 until tomorrow.

Also, considering that shit actually happens in Paranormal, not much. I mean, it isn't the greatest movie ever, but it led somewhere. Not worth spending money on.

The three Coen movies that'd go to a desert island with me are Barton Fink, Big Lebowski, and Fargo. A Serious Man comes close, though.

I saw 2012 and The 4th Kind yesterday.

I must be losing my edge. Because the 4th Kind really creeped me out. Then again, I only get horrified by psychological thrillers than slasher or torture porn movies. Those are shit.

It must have been her face. Her extremely pale complextion, huge bug eyes, her creepy slow voice, she seemed like a real lunatic. This would probably make me shit my pants if all this was in fact, real, but it isn't, so it just gives you goosebumps. I don't know why the haters. It's like A Nightmare on Elm Street meets Blair Witch Project meets The Mothman Prophecies.

This didn't strike me as much as 'Prophecies' but it's within the same wavelength. Will Patton are in both these movies, but his performance in this movie just didn't cut it. Alot of things just didn't make sense, but thats a movie. It was abysal compared to 2012 which was just chock full of shit. I didn't expect science fact or anything of the sort, but damn, alot of things just made me facepalm. I wanted Cusack's son to go choke on a dick. I just shook my head at Cusack just escaping inescapable death a dozen or so times. The movie would have more effect if he just died at the end, ALA Bruce Willis in Armageddon. Woody Harrelson got extra points for me, despite being an annoying nut, simply because he reminds me of my brother who is really into the end of the world bullshit. It made me laugh.

Oh, and those Russian kids somehow reminded me of Cowards. Could pass for his kids, then again, I don't think he has the balls.

Might need to convince my friends to go see Serious Man. They're convinced that we're seeing 2012 in a couple of days, and I'm not talking them into seeing New Moon either.

Though I just got done watching the Wrestler. Good stuff. Depressing, but still liked it. Rourke certainly did a great job as the Ram.

Now onto something far less depressing...The Big Lebowski...

The odds of me seeing 2012 are right down there with March losing his virginity and the sun not rising tomorrow.

I saw Bright Star last night. It wasn't quite great, but it had its moments. Whenever they read out any of Keats' poetry, really. And it was competently acted and directed - except for the last shot, which was brilliance. I recommend it because apparently it's doing badly at the box office, and it deserves much better.

Plus, y'know, Keats. You never know, they might do Shelley and Byron~! next.

Actually, fuck 2012. If I have time, I'll be watching Julia, starring Tilda Swinton, tonight.

And I meant to see Bright Star, but it was only in Cincinnati for a week.

I don't know what that is, but Tilda Swinton automatically makes everything better.

Hmm... best actress alive, or is that just hyperbole off the top of my head?

Could go either way, I suppose.

I think Julia hit something like...15 theatres. That's probably a severe underestimate, but it didn't come out nowhere around here. It's available streaming from Netflix, but I don't think you Brits have the service.

I just read that it's "inspired" by Gloria by John Cassavetes.

Which reminds me that Gena Rowlands, a rival to the title I just bestowed upon Swinton, is still ticking.
