"Of course," Damon muttered to himself in a not quite so low tone. "Of course I was supposed to add the murtlap essence before I stirred it counter-clockwise. What a bloody idiot!" Pulling his head away from the book, he turned back to the cauldron in front of him. Peering inside, the dark red liquid boiled. Biting his lip, Damon grabbed a rather large pinch of what looked like dark grass from outside of the academy. Looking at it for only a second, he dropped it into the cauldron and began stirring clockwise. One. Two. Three. Four. Fuck. The liquid quickly began to turn to a sickly shade of black. "Damn it!" Damon cursed loudly, letting go of the stirrer and taking a step back. His hands dropped to his hips, and his teeth bit down once more onto his bottom lip. He did not need to utter any more exclamations, and he certainly did not need Professor Hallow to come in demanding what he messed up. No, a professor would be the worst person to walk into that door. The potion he was working on - and failing at making - was a rather above-average healing potion that was specified as healing injuries from dark magic. Why the Sixth Year prefect was making a potion that healed dark magic induced injuries would be the first question asked, followed by what kind of dark magic was going on at the school. Damon did not feel like answering either question, which of course would result in his expulsion and snapping of his wand. Like he would let someone snap his wand. The hell they'd even touch his wand...

A minute passed, Damon seemed only slightly less angry, and his wand was now in his hand. With a small flick downwards, the thick liquid vanished from the cauldron. Putting it away, he pushed the sleeves of his dark blue button-up to his elbows before turning his attention on the cutting board to the right of the cauldron. He was slowly running out of moonstone, and, by his calculations, only had enough for three more tries. Of course, he thought he'd only need one or two times before brewing it right. Thankfully, no one was there to see him fail. It was even better that he was the only one there to see himself fail seven times. Grabbing the sharp cutting knife, Damon held the white moonstone in his hand. Bringing down the blade in the middle of the stone, he pushed down with a small amount of force. The stone split into two pieces, and a minute pile of dust sat between them. Scraping the dust to the side of the board, he silently told himself to remember to bag that up before leaving. Moonstone was never to be wasted, and there were several other potions he wanted to concoct that needed moonstone. With several more cuts, the moonstone was nothing but multiple slices of its former self. Gathering them up in his hand, He grabbed a bottle half-full of a disgusting looking liquid and moved to the cauldron. Taking a deep breath, Damon poured the contents of the bottle into the cauldron while simultaneously dropping the shards of the moonstone. Once the bottle was empty, and the moonstone was all in the cauldron, Damon grabbed the stirrer and began to stir clockwise. Ten. Thirty. Fifty. One minute. His green eyes softened, and his lips curved upwards. So far, so good. It was a light, creamy color that reminded Damon of rotten milk. Now all he had to do was not mess up. Again.

"Star-grass is missing." Carlin said leaning against the door with her hands crossed in front of her chest. Just a whiff of the brewing liquid seemed to tell her what it lacked and what was in it. Her knowledge of potions and its ingredients surpised her. She had never paid too much attention in Potions and neither had she had any prior tutoring. Her first lessons had been slow...but as soon they were brewing potions and mixing things up she seemed to know exactly what to do. Her mind seemed geared in it's direction and Carlin herself found it odd. She really had no liking for the subject by itself...the fact that she was good at it simply made her like it. She never bothered being innovative and trying out anything outside classes either. Whatever skill she had was buried within her and kept for the use in lessons. Well, at least that she knew would be something she'd have no trouble with at exams. Classes and studies were not her strong suit. In fact, they were the things she majorly lagged behind at. By the end of the semester she would be buried behind overdue assignments and work cursing loudly and tugging at her hair. Unless offered by a handsome young man; she'd do it all by herself however messed up it might end up. Her brothers being in the same boat as her really wasn't of any advantage when it came to this bit. Her Ravenclaw brother was the only one that could possibly help her...but he stood his ground and was firm about not encouraging any of them to slack even more. Here at Patronus Academy; she was alone. Neither did she have brothers to fool around with nor any to scold her and set her straight. She was alone...and free. It was a terrible feeling. Taking a deep breath she shook her thoughts away as soon as they occured...determined to steer clear from all those emotions that ran through her. They led to thoughts so dark...too destructive. They made her feel like a different person altogether.

It wasn't hard to recognize the immensely tall, dark haired boy that stood before her brewing a potion. There weren't many that towered high like him...and very few that let their hair fall like he did. Pushing away from the door she walked to his side and peered into the cauldron. The scent filling her nostrils telling her it was right, alright. Her eyes scanned the ingredients that lay around and picked up the lance-shaped grass pinching it's ends neatly and precisely. When she had a couple handful she dropped it into the boiling potion evenly and said "Ten anti-clockwise and another ten clockwise..." Her hand moved over his guiding slowly for the first few turns. Watching the potion begin to thicken and turn greenish she looked up at Damon. The older boy was pretty much the same...the way his hair fell over his eyes and his dark clothing; except for his complexion all was just the same. "You've darkened over the summer..." she commented tilting her head to a side leaning back and smiling up at him. For some reason, she always did love how she had to tilt her head slightly backwards to look up at him. She felt so tiny compared to him...strangely, she liked it. "Looks better on you, I must say..." she winked turning her head and peering over her shoulder to look at how the potion was turning out. It had stopped changing color but still continued boiling...thickening. "A healing potion..." she murmured. "How strong do you want it?" her brows furrowed as she turned her eyes to him.

"Star-grass is missing." He was so wrapped up into making sure the potion didn't blow up in his face that the sound of the door opening did not reach him. He was startled, but he didn't show it. Instead, he looked up and found his eyes landing on a girl. She was short, not the shortest, and her hair was jet black. It only took him a moment, but his mind landed on a name just as she walked farther into the room. Carlin Hayes. Badger? Yes, Badger. A partier sounded about right. He had seen her around Hogwarts before at all of the Butterbeer fests, usually draped over some bloke's arm. There wasn't really anything wrong with that, but she didn't care to hide what kind of girl she was. It wasn't his place to judge though. It was her body, and he had never stuck his nose in her business before. Turning to look back down at the cauldron, he let out a hushed curse. Star-grass was exactly what he needed. It would turn the potion green, and help add the potent numbness to it all. A very important ingredient that he hadn't put in the past two times. He went to grab at them, but Carlin was there first. He watched her with a bemused look, staying silent as she pinched them correctly and dumping them into the bubbling cauldron.

"Ten anti-clockwise and another ten clockwise..." She spoke softly as she moved her hand around his. He already had the stirrer in his hand, and she guided him to the first few movements. It was hard to ignore her soft touch, but he was able to do it as he let his eyes focus on the liquid below them. He finished the stirring soon, and the color was already turning into a milky green. Perfect. A smile plastered on his lips, he turned his head to look at the girl only to see her already smiling back at him. "You've darkened over the summer..." That was a bit random, but Damon had no problem with it. It was a fact, and he was glad to see someone noticing. It was starting to go away as the cold was settling in, but he wasn't too broken up about it. Except it did make the girl look at him in a certain way that was having his blood coursing unexpectedly fast. "Looks better on you, I must say..." He just now realized he hadn't said anything back to her, and hurried to reply. "Er, thanks," He said modestly, reaching to scratch the back of his neck. "I like being outside. The sun's my friend I guess you could say." He was usually smoother than this, but he was blaming his focus on the potion. He was so worked up over it that he was off his game. Not that he wanted to be on his game with her. Right? "A healing potion... How strong do you want it?" Thankfully, she didn't realize just how strong he wanted it. But if he told her, she wouldn't have to figure it out. He really didn't even know why he was making this potion. He didn't practice the Dark Arts anymore. Though it was lingering in the back of his mind... "Oh, just a little more than intermediate. I wanted to practice some nasty hexes and I don't want to run off to the H-Wing every time something gets a little too nasty. I should be getting the murtlap essence now." And then he reached to grab the jar that held it, bringing his eyes on it so that he wouldn't have to think too much about the cute girl looking at him.

A smirk played around the edges of her lips as she noticed a slight tension rise in the air among them. This boy was almost perfect to her imagination. Probably the one person that fit right into her perception of the guy for her. Tall, dark, handsome and a wonderful way with words. She remembered hearing him talk at several ocassions before. Oh, how she loved the way he strung words together. There was nothing suggestive about them but it always felt so sensual to her. Somehow, even with all this in her mind she had never made the move...she always just stood by and noticed him out of the corner of her eye listening to him and taking in his words and appearance. She sometimes found herself wondering if she was simply intimidated or just afraid to throw herself at him because he really wasn't like any others. It was stupid. Of course, she didn't feel anything for this boy. She couldn't. She never did. She had pushed it away multiple times and thrown her arms around other necks telling herself how happier she was doing just this. Standing by him right now, she wondered if she had just been fooling herself. "Er, thanks," he said scratching the back of his neck. She smiled up at him a soft laugh leaving her lips at his uncertainity on how to react to her compliment. It was adorable...and she was have cooed inwardly if it had been any other guy. But this was someone she expected a lot more than just a modest thanks from. She'd go weak once he spoke; she knew. But his words that followed weren't much. The smile didn't fall from her face as she moved her eyes back to the cauldron and then up at him once again with a frown. Her eyes watched his lips as he spoke...he spoke fast; she liked that.

"More than intermediate?" she repeated watching his hands reached out for a bottle of murtlap essence. Her eyes alternating between his face and the bottle...watching him closely. "Oh...give me that." she laughed softly at his hesitation and pulled the bottle from his hand. She stirred by circling it mid air slightly; watching the yellow liquid swirl. On her toes, she peered in watching each drop trickle and fall into the milky green potion making no instant changes. "Don't stir too quick..." she lay her hand over his...her eyes intently watching the potion slowly boiling up. Beginning to stir clockwise as the whole thing bubbles up. "Star-grass for inner healing..." she murmured softly. "Murtlap for the outer..." she looked up at him. "Rue and Cowbane strengthens healing potions...but I have no idea which one's going to help this one." she stared back into the potion that had calmed down for the time being...her hand still lingering over his absent-mindedly. "Cowbane's dangerous..." she continued without looking up. Her hand holding his as she began to stir again slowly. "Rue's the safer option...but not as strong." she chewed on her lip thinking out aloud, let go of his hand and turned to face him. "Rue would be fine for hexes...just a pinch." She decided aloud nodding slightly. It was odd how her concentration shifted so sincerely to potions when the subject was up. It certainly seemed out of character for Carlin...and yet, this was exactly how she got when it came to mixing together ingredients and weighing out which would help and with what. Sometimes, she wondered herself how she knew they would help. In this case at least; she remembered reading somewhere how Rue had the ability to heal even poisonous wounds and Cowbane being venomous by itself had a stronger healing property against any injury.

As she began to speak in fragments, Damon came to an obvious conclusion. She knew her stuff. Maybe she wasn't as skilled in it as someone like little Carrow, but she knew what she was doing. What was more than that was that she didn't even question what he was doing. Then again, that wasn't very surprising. This was Carlin Hayes, the girl that had been the talk of the boys' dormitories for the past few years. He never really understood what the fuss was about, but he was never one to lie about things. The girl was attractive. There was an air around her that said she simply didn't care about what people thought of her. Damon admired that in people, but he wasn't so sure that it was right to go about it the way she did. It was a bit hypocritical as Richard did the same thing, though to a slightly lesser extent, but still... It unnerved Damon. However, she was pleasant to spend time with. Especially when she was helping him with this. He was actually able to understand what he was supposed to be doing, and that would help him next time. Of course, he had already swore to himself that there would be no next time. It was a stupid idea to think about trying to learn again. He was through with that, and he wasn't touching it again. Richard and him were naive kids when they had tried to learn it all, but they had learned their lessons.

Nodding at Carlin's last words, he continued to stir until he saw the effect. The color of the potion was now a golden yellow. There were several large bubbles due to the boiling, and according to the book, it was perfect. Well, exceptional at the least. Grinning, he nodded before turning to Carlin. "You're really good at this," Damon said warmly. Placing the stirrer onto the table, he leaned against it slightly. "Why do you not show up Carrow in classes? You could give him a run for his money. I'd pay for that," Damon joked, winking at her. He was a natural flirt, not being able to help himself. He still flirted with Aimee and Chloe at times, but they knew the drill already. Carling probably didn't.

Potions was her strong-suit...but she never had put too much effort into it or even bother to better her skill. She went to a couple of classes whenever she felt like it, got credits for brewing a potion exactly as asked but never went that extra mile to experiment things and shine abover anyone else in her class. The way her head worked and calculated reactions and effects of ingredients when added to a potion would have probably helped her concot a whole lot of potions from the simple ones taught in class...but Carlin couldn't be bothered. She found them of no use...potions according to her was ineffective as compared to spellwork. So when Damon put forth his little idea she had simply laughed looking up at him. Sure, she really would love to smash him down at this point after that demeaning argument they had had just the day before but she really didn't have confidence in what she knew because she rarely did work on it. It all just felt like instinct...and hell, who knows if any of that wouldn't just end up having stuff blown up in her face. "Interesting thought..." she winked back at him turning around to face him and leaning backwards against the table. "Can I take that pay literally?" she smirked up at him cocking her head towards him. Well, if he really would enjoy it why wouldn't she put up a show for him. It wouldn't be her usual one...but it would be something this boy would enjoy, apparently. It wasn't odd that she'd take up a proposition as such...but it was strange that she didn't drag the boy in deeper. Intimidating. Yes, it really did seem like it was just that. She had been with older guys...but that was always short-lived. They never really bothered with someone like Carlin unless they were wankered or completely messed up.

Looking over her shoulder at the potion that was now left untouched she sniffed and nodded approvingly at Damon. She slid her hand in between them brushing against him slightly as she reached for the book he had referring to. Her eyes directly fell on the name of the potion and the small description that was scribbled beneath it. She raised her eyes up at him "...for nasty hexes, eh? Doesn't seem like it..." But it didn't really faze her much. With all that was happening in the wizarding world it wasn't a surprise that students were beginning to try and fight for themselves and keep themselves out of harms way; or at least have something just in case trouble was to fall upon them. Carlin herself had pulled out Ians' notes and several others books he referred to learn a couple of things. The Ravenclaw had been brilliant at recording each and every spell he mastered and any other he picked up along the way. He had taught her a couple of things...but right then, it just wasn't enough. Running her finger down the page she looked at the next instruction and reached out behind her for a bottle filled with black thick granules pouring out some into her palm and counting ten and dropping it into the potion one by one. "Stronger I'm guessing?" she looked up at him just a moment and didn't really wait for him to answer as she dropped in a couple more before reaching out for the stirer. With her hand stretched out and fingers wrapped around the handle of the stirer she just stared down at the potion that remained quite still. The tiny granule floating on the top slowly disappearing. "What exactly are you doing this for?" she slowly asked not looking up at him.
