Chapter Eight Endure The sound of Mirella’s body slamming into the stone wall causes Luna to gasp in surprise. Her potion had failed and Pain still has her powers. The gypsy wants to cry for letting down her friends. They are all going to die and its her fault for not stripping Pain’s powers away properly. Oh, what if I just made her stronger!? Luna looks around to see that the others have already climbed to their feet, preparing to fight Pain. She’s scared but knows that she has to do what she can for them so she gets up too, feeling uneasy after the blast. Instinctively, she relies upon her power of illusion and flicks her hand out at Pain, hopefully trapping her in a vision of complete darkness. Unsure that the illusion even takes hold, Luna turns and runs to Mirella, who lays crumpled on the floor, groaning. “Mirella!” The redhead kneels down beside her friend. Luna isn’t a doctor, but she does her best. She takes a look at the scratches on the other woman’s back, all of which seem minor. She has no way of gauging any internal injuries though. “Are you alright?” “I’m fine. We’ve got to stop her,” Mirella says as she stands. Luna bites her lip with worry, keeping her hands at the ready should Mirella fall over or something. A bit of wind ruffles their hair and Luna looks over to see the others engaged with Pain. “They need us, Luna.” “I know… I don’t think my illusion worked.” Luna pouts at this. She doesn’t like to feel vulnerable. She feels Mirella pull away from her. She falls in line, following the witch into battle. Hoping that she had been wrong before, Luna tries her hand at another illusion. This time she sets Pain in a dark cavern as she faces a dragon. The small flicker of surprise is the only sign that the illusion was a success. Luna smiles triumphantly, but it fades a moment later. She literally feels Pain tear the vision down – but not before Aleron, in stone form, punches the goddess in the gut. Luna claps excitedly as she watches Pain fly backward from the force of Aleron’s attack. Her clapping draws his attention and he returns her smile. The ground rumbles beneath her feet. Scared, she throws her arms out to the side, trying to keep her balance, but is thrown anyways, the floor literally rupturing. Luna looks up to see that Pain has focused on her, possibly figuring out that she is illusion caster. The gypsy squeaks. Luna slides backward along the stone floor as Pain stalks toward her. This is it! I’m a goner! Stopping, Luna throws her arm over her eyes, trying to pretend this isn’t happening right now. A small explosion sounds only a few feet from where she sits. She is even able to feel the force of it pushing against her. “Get away from her!” That’s Julianna. Luna peers out to see that the Coven has descended upon Pain in protection of her. The sight of it makes her want to cry from joy. * * * * * Pain recovers from Julianna’s blast with ease, but she is beginning to feel worn down. The pests had been successful in stripping her of her immortality – but not her powers. She is certain that was the intent of the potion thrown at her. The goddess steps forward with two quick steps, meeting her attackers head on. With a back hand, empowered by her super-strength, Pain sends Mirella reeling. She is fairly certain she heard the woman’s jaw crack upon being struck, but has no time to take pleasure in it. The others are on her immediately. “Chair!” The older male calls out while she battles against the boy of stone. Apparently she should have paid more attention as the summoned object strikes her from the right. Pain stumbles, but keeps on going. She’s a goddess! Pausing in her duel, Pain lashes out with a bolt of lightning from her hand. She sees that it has found its mark before continuing to duke it out with Aleron. Once again, the winds pick up within the battlefield and Pain is thrown to the ground by them. Aleron thinks to take advantage and brings a double-fisted pound down on the fallen goddess. Bringing her hands up, Pain catches hold without issue, using her super-strength to keep from being squashed. She pushes upward and sends Aleron stumbling back while she climbs to her feet with ease. Now standing, Pain rounds on her attackers once again. A quick scan shows that the forces of light are in bad shape. The dark haired woman, the one on the receiving end of her backhand, seems down for the count, with the gypsy at her side. Even the human male seems in a precarious state. That leaves only two. “I do not know what it is that you hoped to accomplish.” Pain looks down upon her opponents as she delivers her spiel in a snide tone. Pests. “We are on the eve of a new world order. Mine.” “No.” Pain turns to Julianna, who has spoken up in defiance of her proclamation. She gives the witch a once over and almost immediately dismisses her, confident even in this weakened state. “I – we – won’t allow it.” Then the world went dark. Again. * * * * * “We are on the eve of a new world order. Mine.” The condescending tone delivered from the lips of the hellion goddess grinds Julianna the wrong way. It is time to bring this bitch down a couple of notches. As if taken over by an unseen force, Jules stands up and speaks out on behalf of the world. “No. I – we – won’t allow it.” A look of surprise – and then anger – crosses Pain’s face. It comes from seemingly nowhere with no evident cause. Suspicious, Julianna narrows her eyes as she waits for this to play out. What’s her game? “Julianna!” At the sound of her name, Jules looks over at Luna, who is repeatedly flicking her hands at Pain. It clicks. Luna is creating a distraction, giving them an opportunity. She nods, finally understanding. Jules’ long locks begin to flail in the winds that she summons. The wind remains focused around the witch as she stands in their focal point. Using her hands, Jules directs them tighter and tighter until they are contained in a tight ball of compressed air. Locking eyes on Pain, Julianna unleashes the ball of wind upon the goddess and watches as it slams into Pain, sending her into the wall. “Aleron! Hold her down!” Julianna calls out. Even as she commands the druid to task, Jules backs up to take up a position beside Thomas. A moment later, Aleron is holding Pain’s body against the wall. Jules jerks her head to the side and Aleron repositions himself, getting out of the way. “Thom,” She says, turning her head to look at her co-captain. They share a look, a silent understanding forms and they both nod. Jules looks to Pain, struggling in Aleron’s grasp. “Torch!” One of the tall metal brackets, which hold the torches that light the council chamber, disappears in a swath of golden lights. The orbs of light move across the room with great speed. They begin to fade and are replaced by the torch bracket, which strikes Pain in the chest. Coldly, Julianna watches as Pain’s eyes and mouth go wide in shock. “Take that, bitch,” Julianna mutters under her breath. The flesh seems to melt away from the bone and into nothing as if the body is decaying at rapid speed. She stands there, witnessing the phenomenon without emotion. It was finally over. Looking around the room, Jules sees that Aleron has reverted to human form and Mirella is more or less standing on her own two feet. The others slowly gravitate towards her and Thomas, but all eyes are on Pain. Or what’s left of the former hellion goddess. Aleron is the first to break the silence. “So… about that trip to Disneyworld.” Julianna can’t help but smile at the random comment. This destiny has weighed on her so heavily that she never thought that she would smile or laugh again. She didn’t believe that there would be life to love after this. She had been convinced it would be the end of the line, and is glad to be wrong. “Of course,” is her reply because she can’t think of anything else to say. Besides, she couldn’t deny her friends any request right now, too elated that they are all still alive. Jules peers over at Aleron and nods her head towards the door. “Lets go.” “For real?” Disbelief and reserved excitement is clearly evident in the boy’s voice. Julianna laughs at his wide-eyed innocence and nods her head. “Sure. Why not?” The five of them – the Coven – shift and move towards the door. Aleron and Luna are the first ones to burst out into the hallway while Julianna brings up the rear. She pauses just before passing over the threshold and looks back. The room seemed benign now and not the location where they fought for their lives and saved the world. It’s surreal and Julianna is just happy to be alive.[/b] |
