Last week, during a special question-and-answer session on Twitter, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson disclosed that he was originally supposed to be part of WrestleMania 30. In the discussion, he also revealed that he and Vince McMahon had discussed a potential blockbuster match that would have pit The Rock against Brock Lesnar. At the end of the of his big reveal, The Rock said he had no plans for WrestleMania 30, but he might be around for next year's event. Aside from the disappointing news that Dwayne is unlikely to be at Mania this year, the idea of losing out on Lesnar and The Rock is even worse. As someone who isn't thrilled with the idea of big-name wrestlers only working a handful of dates each year, I must say I would've been very interested in seeing Lesnar and The Rock square off again, and I suspect most wrestling fans feel the same way. It was August of 2002 when these two men met for a memorable encounter as The Rock defended his WWE Championship against Lesnar at SummerSlam. That match is memorable for a couple reasons, mainly because the crowd turned against The Rock in the middle of the match and started cheering Lesnar. Eventually, when Lesnar got the win over Rocky, the crowd erupted and The Rock disappeared for a few months shortly afterwards. It also marked the start of Lesnar's first championship reign. Coincidentally, these two also appeared on the WrestleMania 20 card in separate matches, but both of their appearances would mark their last matches with the company for some time. The Rock left to go to Hollywood and become a movie star, while Lesnar left to pursue an NFL career before eventually becoming a UFC champion. To see these two behemoths face off once again now that they have both become stars outside of the WWE could've made for some great storytelling. Lesnar and his manager/agent Paul Heyman could easily point to that 2002 match as the biggest regret of The Rock's career. Of all the greats that he has faced and eventually beat, he never beat Lesnar and that would be his fuel for coming back. As two of the most athletic wrestlers in the WWE, these two could've had another excellent match. Their 2002 encounter was great and based on the work both have done since returning to the WWE, there is no reason to believe that another match wouldn't be just as good. Not to mention that it's a main-event caliber match that wouldn't have to impact the storyline after WrestleMania. While I tend to believe that WrestleMania 30 should be used as a platform to launch a wrestler into super stardom -- I'm thinking Daniel Bryan for one -- Brock vs. Rock would've been a main event worthy of headlining WrestleMania 30 and the story could end that night. Even though The Rock said he was looking toward possibly being part of WrestleMania 31 and thus meaning another encounter with Lesnar could happen, it doesn't mean that it will or that The Rock will even wrestle again. There really aren't two active stars as big as these two and to know that fans were very close to seeing it happen -- but likely won't -- is disappointing to say the least. -link |
